This is a speedrun of Crayon Shin-Chan 4 for the Game Boy.
  • I used vba-rerecording-svn190-win32
  • Frame advance was used
Crayon Shin-Chan is a short game with only 4 levels. It was based on a manga and anime TV series. In this game Shin-Chan can become:
  • A chicken (I am basically one for the whole movie)
  • A cat (only used in Level 1)
  • A beetle (never used)
  • A robot (only used once)

Interesting... there is a pirated version of this game out there, named "Super Mario Land 4" which was once sold in real cartridges. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xd8U2Axo5U I got one too and I even made an unfinished TAS of this version a long time ago. I'm going to check out your run.

Okay I watched your movie. It brought back quite some memories from when I played the pirated version. The levels are the same for the most part. I'm not exactly familiar with the original game, but there are some possible improvements I want to point out. - You can start the levels sooner by pressing A, Start or a combination of both, without having to listen to the tune everytime. - You can fly across most of level 1. Starting from here: until here: - You don't hit bosses at the first possible frame. And often you aren't close to the right side to go out of the screen (to trigger the level end), so you had to walk there and thus wasted some time. I'm not very familiar with the game and therefore I'm not confident about this point, but positioning didn't seem optimal in some places. - You didn't use frame advance much/effectively it seems. At the end you autofired A at 25% speed or so, wasting a lot of frames. The run seems good, and is okay for a beginner's run but there are quite some possible improvements (I think you could save at least 20 seconds). I suggest you implement these, and take your time optimizing things, especially the boss fights, instead of rushing it. If you aren't interested in redoing this TAS, I'd like to give this a shot some time in the future :)

I see what MUGG is saying about optimizing, especially for boss fights. I would like to add that it seems you attack more enemies than you need to (especially in Stage 2), and each attack slows you down. It looks like you want to kill fewer basic enemies along the way. This looks like an amusing wacky game (in fact, it sort of reminds me of Trip World). I think you did a decent job, but I think this should be improved. This also brings up an important question: why can the cat fly, but the chicken can't? Is the cat actually a flying squirrel? ;-)
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I have to echo MUGG's concerns about the technical quality of this run. I also don't think the game itself is very interesting to watch, seeming to me to be just another slow-paced platformer. No vote, but if there's interest in seeing a run of this game I'd encourage you to polish this with some input from people so interested.

If you do decide to polish this run, please make a thread in the appropriate forum where you can post your WIPs so that those interested in helping you can provide feedback before the run makes it to the workbench.

Hey NitroGenesis, why don't you create a thread in the Game Boy Games section for WIPs of this game? That way, you can get people checking your progress from time to time. I think this canceled run shows promise...
