Hmmm... Apparently, it is now possible to record videos using DOSBox: http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Recording_Video
The question is, can we now do TASes? Come to think of it, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive TASes were done without a lot of the now essential implements in the early days, were they not? If it's possible... Show me the Gobliiins series, the WarCraft series and the Settlers series!
Why, oh, why do I even try to understand my own species?
FYI, recording video with DOSBox has been possible for nearly two years (which is how old version 0.65 is). It doesn't help even a bit with sync problems, though.

I'm sure it would be much easier to write a QBasic emulator than a complete PC emulator. You just have to add some restrictions, e.g. no CALL ABSOLUTE and no file access.
How did 4 years pass with re-recording capabilities and no further improvement?
I wanted to do a GTA run about a year ago, so I grabbed Bisqwit's patch and tried applying it to DOSBox 0.73. Spent about a week tracing through the code trying to figure out why it wouldn't initialize the video before giving up.
I was lazy as hell in my attempt, but I don't think getting a game running properly, much less stabilizing the emulation and making the recording bulletproof, is going to be child's play for anybody.
Though, I've been playing XCOM: TFTD, and would like very much to see a lone gunman going rambo on a sub...
Preliminary effort: I found the 0.70 source on sourceforge, which I had thought would mean that the source would be identical to what the patch expects. There are still some discrepancies, so who knows if it'll work this time or not. If it doesn't then obviously I'll have to dig a little deeper to actually understand the program.
Again, that takes time, and probably a lot of it in this case.
Edit: Sure enough, it's giving me a black, unscaled rectangle and no sound, nor any sign of an error.

It's legal, though; the site only hosts abandonware.
The abandonware concept is not actually recognized by law, so it's still technically illegal. :(
Well, true abandonware occurs when it's likely that no company can make a claim to the copyright of the game or application. Such as when a company goes bankrupt.
Just because a company goes bankrupt doesn't mean their assets weren't bought up for cheap by someone else. In fact it's pretty likely that any remotely popular game owned by a defunct company was bought out, on the off-chance that there'll be a revival sometime down the line.

This could be interesting:
Tetris Classic: played for the exact time, to make it play the level musics, without playing the fanfare in-between levels, ... because in this game, music is the best part =P

Exactly, but sometimes this doesn't happen, e.g. if nobody is interested in buying that intellectual property. They can't be auctioned off in the way that an office chair can, either.
Realms of the Haunting.
If someone were to TAS this game, I would most gladly help. It was one of my most favorite games of all times, but it's quite a longass game so I figure it would take quite some time to cook up a decent TAS.

How about the original Test Drive?

Awesome game and it probably wouldn't be a very long TAS. All you have to do is make it to the gas station. I'm willing to bet you could do it in 50 seconds of input time.
