I don't think this is his problem ... from what I've read, the problem seems to be the audio, since when he turned it off, everything was fine. What I'd suggest is try to turn off an audio option after another until it stops freezing. When it doesn't freeze at all, you've found the option that makes it freeze (woah ... not sure if I'm clear when saying that)

Yes, perhaps the part of the code that handles sound got got messed up, and is causing segfaults or infinite loops because of it.

maybe it does something recurrsively, and it's at that point that the call stack overflows.

If none of the other options help, try changing the "Sound Driver" option in the sound settings, and closing snes9x. (If that makes it always crash starting up, that means you need to copy the fmod.dll from snes9x 1.43 Final into the directory of the snes9x you're using.) Also, if that doesn't work either, try fast-forwarding to the bowser fight, then before snes9x freezes, make a save state. Then open up snes9x and start playing the movie again (make sure it's in read-only mode) and load the save state you made right before it froze. That might work as a temporary workaround. I can't get it to freeze on my setup, sometimes it pauses for maybe 1 second after turbo mode stops but it always keeps going like normal after that.

Whoa! There's been a lot of activity on this thread which wasn't there a while ago. spezzafer, I haven't watched your video yet, but I'm looking forward to it. You say you're not actually attempting a real time attack? Is anyone out there planning one or doing one? I may acquire sufficient motivation to continue my abandoned attempt with the help that spezzafer's run is generating, but it wouldn't be for a while yet, and I'd be even slower working on it than before, because now I have a full time job (and a wife), whereas before I was only working part time. A few questions I have that I had when I was doing my run before: 1. Desynching. I recall that all the movies I made would desynch after a while. I am assuming that this is fixed in the latest version of snes9x? 2. Luck manipulation - what is available now for help with this? What tools are available to see the game's memory status or whatnot, that would help me to determine when to press buttons during battles? 3. Did anyone test the supposed glitch I described a few pages back with Jinx and levelling to level 30? Any successes, or is this a completely unfounded rumor? 4. I still am unsure whether it is worth obtaining the quartz charm and experience booster. spezzafer, are you doing any sort of testing to determine whether it is faster to skip them or get them? 5. And for a longshot, has there been any update on the land's end/kero sewers shortcut possibility, or is it a completely shut case?

after Valentina's defeat new save states: monstro town - nimbus land I know this is a little early for an update but snes9x won't let me load anymore save states made after 500,000 recorded frames (it keeps giving me the 'not a movie snapshot' act) so I'll either have to split it (the movie) up or wait for a fix.

Oh, hehe, guess I'd better upload a version with the fix then, was hoping to fix some other things first before anyone using it reached the limit. It'll be another... 8 hours or so before I can though.

spezzafer: I just uploaded an update for snes9x that should let you continue past the previous limit. Avin: 1. This has apparenly been fixed by making sure to use a certain combination of sound settings, which my modified version of snes9x makes easier to keep straight, among other things. 2. Snes9x has a "cheat finder" that lets you view values in the game's memory and do searches for what values are different or the same between save states, and it lets you lock a value to a constant to test what the effect is. I don't think it's been used much so far though. 3. I think someone said they tried it and couldn't get it to work, but I'm not sure... it sounds fake to me though. 5. It's definitely not possible. Omni tested it extensively and I tried it out a while ago too, and it seems like the game developers thought it through and specifically made it impossible to take that shortcut.

The run looks great so far. Does anyone know who will be taking up the run after this one is done? Also, going through the second belome fight at the fastest emulated speed is very very entertaining.

I was going to do this after LttP. So it should be out around 2034. And I have to test it with Right+Left enabled. I haven't had a chance since the fix was uploaded.

I'm also interested in doing this, and I too would take forever in doing so. Is there anything for which left+right would be significant?

You never know ... in most (if not all) games, though, programmers didn't even THINK of "protecting" their games against left+right or up+down, since a normal controller could never input left AND right at the same time (unless it's completly trashed or something). You never know what could happen. You should test it yourself to get the best answer for this question.

complete new save states: Barrel Volcano - Factory I included the Jinx and Culex fights for anyone who would like to refer to them or judge whether or not they and their rewards are time attack worthy. For anyone determined to make a much greater run, please consider these tips: - Try to weed out the unnecessary fights at the beginning to the ones that only give you flower points. You can see by my run that you need no more than 47 to have enough FP to last, but at the beginning in the Croco, Mack and Bowyer fights specifically, I use syrups to restore it. Keep in mind the multiples of FP costs in proportion to your max FP. - Test the number of frames in comparison between getting frog coins from Wigglers and frog coins in secluded places (adverse examples include frog coins that are slightly off/directly in your path or in the same room). - Maybe consider saving some of the Lucky Jewel turns for XP goldmines like the Culex battle or the later battles in the Volcano and Factory. - Buy as many fire bombs and ice bombs as possible to save time when timing for freebies (which is the most tedious thing in a run like this). I wish I hadn't used up the fire bombs, as I found enemies with fire weaknesses later on in which the bombs would have sped things up. - The lazy shell route I took was poorly chosen...the shells need to be gotten (if at all) as soon as possible; I could have ended the Czar Dragon and Axem Rangers fights much quicker. - There are many more kinks in this, like the individual menus I bring up, where it would have been faster to do it all in one menu routine. This was poor planning. I didn't need to buy all of those Freshen Ups and Froggie Drinks, and I should have sold the extra Mushrooms and Honey Syrups to avoid the needless scrolling through them and constantly moving left/right in the battle menus which I hated doing so much because it was so time consuming, wading through the retarded surplus of mushrooms which I never ever used. Do not buy more than you need. - Don't bother with frog coins after getting the XP booster. - Only time attacks when necessary, this includes jumps. It won't really look like a mistake if it's the final blow. Use fire bombs instead of Mario's magic because they are much faster...except on the last boss, where they are much more powerful and Smithy changes his head after a certain number of turns (regardless of how much damage you have dealt him) so you need to squeeze in as much as possible in those situations. Here are some of the tricks I discovered: - Using enemies as platforms when invincible...this is similar to the 'jumping on and running away from' trick used to get to Land's End from the sewers. There is only ONE frame you can do it, though, so it must be timed perfectly. I've only found two uses of this so far (Bandit's Way and Kero Sewers). - In Rose Way, don't wait for the moving platforms to move to the next land mass. You can jump to move them quicker. That's all I have so far. Questions, comments, and crits (particularly) are welcome. If anyone wants to append their tips or tricks feel free to do so. Thank you nitsuja for your incredibly improved snes9x and making this run (and others) possible! I'm going to turn my attention back to YI now.

That's very interesting about the ice and fire weaknesses. I just took a look at http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/super_mario_rpg_boss_a.txt and found that there were more than I had realized. Were there any more than what that list describes? It's not possible to obtain a bomb before Seaside town, is it? (Other than the rock candy)

fire and ice bombs can be obtained in moleville from the item trading business in one of the shacks...100 pts yields any type of the three bombs (excluding Rock Candies) but that would waste too much time trekking back and forth for bombs, and the only items you would have enough of up to that point would be a couple of KeroKeroColas, which you need at least three alone to get a bomb...so it would be quicker to just sell them in Seaside Town to get the bombs faster (you get more bombs for kerokerocolas compared to points) the list you gave has a mistake: the ding-a-lings are NOT weak against ice as it is obvious when you use an ice bomb...if you want reliable stats download the PIPES rom editor here although it doesn't give XP or coin stats, it reads from the actual rom. It is also inaccurate in regards to XP for individual bosses...it merely gives the total from all bosses in a single battle and divides them among party members, but that isn't really a concern since it gives the actual amount given to all party members anyways, so it's probably more convenient keep in mind that ice bomb and fire bomb animations are over 60 frames faster than rock candies so I still recommend using the bombs when exploiting fire/ice weaknesses...I sure wish they had thunder bombs I don't know what the hell the guy in the low-level walkthrough at gamefaqs is talking about when he claims you can go through whirlpools without fighting Shoguns...honestly I tried jumping in at many different times and the Shogun still popped out, ready as ever.

Thats easy. If your talking about those whirlpools in the desert with those monsters in it, on your way to monster town? Just as they pop up from the whirlpool, walk away quickly. Takes some precision to make but it's rather easy to do with a real SNES. I own the cartridge and has done that many times. That should save some time, unless you really wanna level up on them?

I second that. I got stuck around there and went back and forth severeal times and just happened to notice that myself. When knowing how to do, this is really easy to do even without rerecords or slowdowns.

I've tried that many times myself without success as well. I HAVE noticed however that after beating them once, I am able to evade them the next time I go through that area. If you're sure that you can evade them the first time through Land's End, could one of you make a video demonstrating?

You have to fight the shoguns the first time through unless there's some exotic glitch involved. I tried to find a way to avoid them in my run but I didn't find anything that worked (on an actual SNES, anyway).

Sorry if this has already been posted, but if you die you don't lose any experience. I abused this fact and right before going to the ship w/ Johnny there is a star box that you can hit and kill a lot of starfish then die and go back to the save and repeat this to level. I'm not sure if this is useful in a speed run but there is another spot where there are massive amounts of guys involving a star and that's in the Volcano when you can buy one. You can level pretty high fairly easily, the longest part is getting killed though.

IMO, getting killed and doing it over takes too long to make it worth it, even at Land's End, which is the best levelling spot since you can get two consecutive stars. It's always possible to kill every boss easily enough via luck manipulation, so getting a couple extra levels doesn't actually save that much time.

Would it be possible to skip those two stars and just head for Monster town in the first place? I mean.. You don't really seem to need those extra levels that much. How much time does those stars save you anyways in the long run?
