Post subject: gossip about polling --- what's "meh"?

The publishing of movies in this site depends on voting. Pollings are usually composed by Yes, No, Meh, these 3 items. I guess "meh" means "unpolling" or "keeping one's own view unshown". But this word seems very unusual and can't be found in common English dictionary. So I doubt if it's from other languages? Perhaps it's a foolish topic~~

Try to think of "meh" as the sound you make when you shrug; it's more of a vocal show of apathy and indifference. I think it was instituted to make a middle ground for all of the 'good but not great' or 'liked the movie but hate the game' votes. I'm unsure, though.

"Meh" is more like a colloquialism rather than an actually existing word. If you try to say it out loud in your mind, you'll find that it sounds kind of indifferent. That's also basically its meaning. When you say "meh", you simply don't really care. Maybe the official Nesvideos submission polls could use a more proper word, but you can basically replace it with "I don't care/I have no opinion" (which is an option that should be in any decent poll).

"meh" is what you say when you don't want to say either yes or no.

i thought about this for a while when it was first introduced. though ive never voted MEH, i think a situation where the movie is VERY WELL PLAYED but not entertaining or something like that is where id vote MEH. but in general, theres rarely anything ive ever seen on this site like that. its usually a yes or no.

I've voted meh one or two times. I've done it because from what I saw the game was well played, but I just didn't enjoy it. I did know however that it is probably just me that felt that way, and there are probably people out there that would love to watch the game. In that case the movie didn't really deserve a no, but it wouldn't make a big difference for me if it was published or not.

Movie can also be highly entertaining, but have disturbing flaws in it, that got a 'meh' off of me once or twice.

In other words, it's ambiguously subjective enough as to be virtually meaningless, is definitely useless, and should not be used. The fact that its usage is an insult to intelligence and to any fundamentally nonapathetic state of mind is aside from that.

Okay, I'll be damned if I'm going to sit here and listen to someone badmouth the Simpsons.
Homer: Kids... how would you... like to go to... Blocko Land!? Lisa and Bart: Meh. Homer: But ... the TV gave me the impression that ... Bart: We said "meh". Lisa: M-e-h. Hungry Hungry Homer" (Season 12, Episode 15)

Hm, nobody seems to have given the answer as I know it yet. "Meh" contributes to the uncertainty level in the poll. I'm sure that for some games, this helps the judges with their decisions. A game that's 100% with 20 yes votes is somewhat easy to agree with. A game that is 100% with 10 yes and 10 meh obviously contains something questionable and should perhaps be reviewed more carefully.

Does "meh" mean "I don't care if it's published or not", or "I'm not sure if it should be published or not"? IOW, is it "no opinion" or "undecided"? There's a significant difference between those two. "No opinion" is like not a vote at all, while "undecided" means that the voter has some concerns about the movie and can't decide if it should be published or not. Perhaps there should be two different "mehs"?

If you're undecided, then don't vote until you decide!

I don't think that's a good solution. If you vote "undecided" you are expressing an opinion. Too many "undecided" votes says something about the movie: If many people have concerns about the quality of the movie, then perhaps it should be reviewed more carefully. OTOH, if many people just vote "I don't care" it just means that the game is uninteresting and the movie doesn't make it any more interesting either (but it's not bad).

To me, it's like posting "I'm not sure if I want to post in this topic" in every topic on the board. If you're undecided, there is no opinion by definition. However, indifference is an opinion. I.e. if some run has got 10 yes votes and 10 mehs, I would think that the run (or game, or both) is good, but interesting only to a small number of fans.

For me, "Meh" is just something I vote when I feel the run was made well, but could have some major improvements with it for some reason.
