Last I heard, there wasn't any support for Flash TASing, unfortunately. The inclusion of a Steam wrapper might also complicate things.

VVVVVV is great fun, even though I suck at it. Excellent speed run, props to whoever did it.

So the humble indie bundle #3 came out, and a with it comes a drm free version of VVVVVV. Given previous failures when trying to run steam games in hourglass, I thought I'd give this steam-free version a go: The intro area. Curiosity has me ask whether or not people would be interested a TAS of such a game.

Why, yes, I'd certainly like to see a TAS of VVVVVV, despite its simplicity. I wonder how much TAS-relevant stuff will be found. I'd also like to suggest an all tokens runs, while I'm at it.

Count me in for wanting to see this. I love this game and I think there could be some very interesting strategies. One glitch I do know of is that you can use the wrapping on the edges of the screen to dodge objects that would otherwise kill you. I know this because it's the way I first figured out how to get the trinket in Edge Games. Far more difficult than the real solution, but I do believe it to be slightly faster. EDIT: That said, the game was totally reprogrammed from scratch in C++ for the humble bundle, so some things might have changed.

For the 100% it might be better to play on No Death mode. This does make one of the tokens quicker to get, and will be more impressive to watch given that all the checkpoints are removed.

Cool, but it's actually a flash game with exe pack I guess. I wonder if it's stable enough to TAS.

The game is, as far as I know, very straightforward to optimize, to the extent that the existing unassisted runs are very close to perfect. What would a TAS add?

If a TAS can abuse inhuman glitches like the IWBTG TAS does and HappyLee's SMB TASes do, it could add quite a bit of entertainment. That's only if such glitches exist, of course.

Apparently it was rewritten to not use Flash, and the mkv Atma provided implies that the rewrite is already TASable.

Realistically, that is actually something that crossed my mind, however sheer optimisation, regardless of how little there may actually seem to be is still there. If being too similar to the sda run would be considered a problem, there are 10 new custom 'levels' included in the 2.0 release, that are probably of a reasonable size each. In terms of glitches, I can't say I've found any, as the game seems to be rather rigid in its mechanics and what you can do (ie. no frame perfect off spike flipping would happen). Also, flip mode just for the hell of it, yes/no?

If anyone wants to test if the edge glitch still exists, go for it. If not, I'll test it at some point when I get around to playing the new version. It is useful only in one or two spots, but in a TAS it wouldn't be the nearly as hard as it is in real time (normally takes me 200-300 tries to pull it off 3 straight times to obtain the edge games trinket, for instance). To do it, you have to weave back and forth on the edge of the screen on the screens which edge wrap. By doing it at the right time, you can pass right through an enemy as it wraps as well. This can also be used on the gravitron/super gravitron to dodge getting hit, but this probably will not be helpful in a TAS.

Since atma's version is an any% speedrun I'm working on a 100% speedrun of this game (with all 20 trinkets) and probably I'm going to post some kind of preview soon

Is the flip mode exactly the same? Why not encode the same TAS running on flip mode and normal mode side by side on the same video? 4x3 +4x3.

I for one would also like to see a TAS of VVVVVV, I just tested it out on Hourglass (first attempt at using it) and I had no problems. While I could probably do one myself I'm still rather new to the game as I only just got it with the Humble Bundle. Going to try out other games in the pack tonight.
This is a pretty boring signature, is it not?
