I created this thread for people to can do TASes, for fun and publish in this thread. Also for other things like discuciones, challenges, etc. There are several hacks of sonic See here Sonic Hacks or Sonic Retro There are some hacks that are allowed and which have been published. For example
  • Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog (Published by JXQ)
  • Miles "Tails" Prower in Sonic the Hedgehog (Published by marzojr)
  • Amy Rose in Sonic the Hedgehog (No Published)
  • Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Processing, by me)
And some more hacks, which will be displayed on the page ----- My favorite is Sonic the Hedgehog Thrash. See the TAS here. There will be more in the next post Edit: Delete the page of rom because it was the wrong hack Edit 2: I have added the real game rom Moderator edit: And I have deleted it because it is against the rules. I recommend reading them.

You do realise that Knux in Sonic 2 is not a hack, but rather the product of using the Lock-on feature of Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic 2?

It's a mass manufactured and vendor authored / supported hack ;)

Note that there has been a rules change regarding hacks: they no longer require special permission and you can just submit the movie as usual, but it will receive harsher scrutiny -- see Wiki: Rules.html#HackedAndHomebrewGame for details.

I decided to try my hand at TASing Amy Rose in Sonic 1; the experimental WIP is up to Marble Zone 1, using revision 1.7 of the hack; it is not at all optimized, and I think I can easily knock off 2 seconds in Green Hill Zone 3, for example. A few comments: Amy runs slower than Sonic, but she can bunny hop for a slightly higher average speed; the hop is also great for out-loop jumping. Amy also has great maneuverability, and the hammer has a nice attack radius. She is a natural boss killer too. When the hack has matured more, I will definitely TAS it :-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHxTAtjyFcU Sonic the Hedgehog 2 XL The gimmick of this hack is that all the rings are now onion rings, and if Sonic eats a few he starts putting on weight. The fatter he gets, the slower he can run and the shorter his jumps are. Eat too much and he can actually die. However, if he hits a question mark block, or does enough exercise, he can return his gut to normal size. Apart from the changing of rings and the addition of question mark boxes, the stages appear unchanged. Still, its a funny variation on Sonic 2 that might be worthy of TASing.

Do you really think so? The TAS would involve avoiding rings and not getting fat. That kinda takes away the whole point of the run - playing through and constantly dying of fatness. I _do_ wish exercise was more effective.

That would be interesting to see. I usually frown upon TASes of Sonic hacks, but this would be an exception. Marzo, if you TASed this hack, I am sure that the run would be awesome.

I have been trying to improve PPZ2, although it is very difficult to know, how emu could do the glitches?

Zeupar: sorry, but I am not interested in the XL TAS -- the objective of completing it as fast as possible would mean collecting as few rings as possible so that Sonic does not get fat (he is slower when fat), thus nullifying the core difference of the hack.

The hack is just a good excuse to TAS Sonic 2 from a new perspective, using different routes and strategies that those used in the TAS by nitsuja. Route planning for this TAS should be fun and interesting. Try TASing the first zone to prove me wrong. :P

Zeupar: sorry, not biting :-p I simply don't think that a hack whose primary innovation is to make the character progressively slower, to the point of being unable to spindash even, is a good candidate for a TAS.

I think that a TAS of Sonic 2 where you take optimal routes to collect as few rings as possible while being fast could be interesting to watch. I had to try. :P FuzZerd might be interested in TASing this hack...

What about S3K: the challenges ? http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_3_%26_Knuckles:_The_Challenges
It has a lot of potential, and getting all the S ranks in the fastest possible time would definitely be interesting. Unfortunately there are at least 4 missions which would slow down the run quite a lot, the two Sidekick missions and the two Bodyguard missions, which run on a fixed time. But sure this is one of the interesting candidates, not unlike the other hacks by ColinC10, such as Robotnik's Revenge (which has been TASed to an extent by at least a couple of members of Sonic Retro) and Sonic 1 and 2, of which I'd like to see a 100% run with all the 13 chaos emeralds, which would differentiate it from the existing Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 TASes (other than the Spin Dash in Sonic 1, of course). Lastly, amongst the "no rings" hack challenges, I'd recommend OMG THE RED RINGS, which really provides an extremely hard challenge, and it can't be completed unassisted, as far as I know. It would be interesting to find out if the TAS tools can make it feasible. Ironically the Final Zone is the easiest level in this hack!

I was actually thinking about that one, too. Although Sonic 2 XL seems like a much more interesting game to play in real time, the fact that the "penalties" are one giant entertainment/speed tradeoff doesn't make me too hopeful for a satisfying TAS. I think OMG THE RED RINGS would be better TASing material... especially if someone were able to prove that it's actually, y'know, beatable.

FuzZerd also TAS'ed it until its breaking point.

Eh, it wouldn't make too much of a difference, really. The main difference -- Super Sonic -- would barely show at all because gathering the 50 rings is too slow.

Glad you enjoyed it. Shame that secretly I was already beat :) I don't think I have enough experience learning how to glitch the game like some people.

To be fair, a lot of that had to do with the fact that I needed to use a hack (a hack that should have been available in 1994, but still a hack) to do it. If I could have done it on the actual Sonic 1 I think it might have been viewed differently.

I don't think so. 70% of the people that voted liked it. People complained about its lack of optimization and arbitrary goals (which were reworded some time after it was submitted to make more sense). I don't think that comparing Mike's movie with a possible TAS of Sonic 2 XL is appropriate, because the main goal of the latter would be clear and simple (finish the game as fast as possible) and optimization shouldn't be a problem if an awesome TASer like you or FuzZerd undertakes that TASk. Also, in that movie of Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog, Mike couldn't get a single ring because of the main goal of the run, which resulted in short parts of the run being boring. However, a player wouldn't have such an important restriction when speedrunning Sonic 2 XL. I am not trying to convince you to TAS that great hack, because you don't seem to like the idea. But I was afraid that your wrong reasoning could discourage other players, so the purpose of my post is to defend my suggestion. :P I think that finding the optimal route for each act would be fun and quite challenging. I wish I had the motivation and knowledge necessary to do it myself. -_-
