Dear byuu, since nobody seem to really be pursuing this, I hope you still are around and plan to add re-recording to your beloved emulator :D

Just have a TAS mode that auto syncs once per frame automatically. In a way it'd be easier since it frees you from having to save states manually, and gives you a nice ultra-high resolution rewind function.
Just this feature alone could get many new people into TASing. Would make the learning curve much more manageable for people who wanted to just make cool movies, who would then go on to become regular TASers. And it would save a lot of time even for experienced users.

It looks like if bsnes is ever going to have tas features, it's not going to be done by byuu. http://board.byuu.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1071&start=0 The third paragraph was a big disappointment to read, considering how it sounded in this thread like re-recording would become a feature of the official releases of bsnes.

I believe it has something to do with this. Then again, now that the core has been more-or-less finalized (all subsystems emulated at 100% accuracy), a TAS-specific fork can be created for the GUI. Byuu has already done enough for this emulator and SNES emulation in general, I'd say.

@Moozooh: Ouch, that was a harsh read. But rerecording support in bsnes is not very far away. Sync wise, what needs to be done is put a runtosync in a given function (byuu has already pointed out which one), and then make the savestate format contain a copy of the movie. Oh, and support for recording reset must be added. But basically, this is a relatively small task - making bsnes rerecording will be much less work than what was put into making many of our other emulators rerecording. I can't volunteer to do this myself, though (sorry AngerFist) - It would be fun to do, but I am swamped in too many projects. But our experienced emulator coders (nitsuja, mz, gocha, etc.) could probably do this relatively quickly (still not a trivial job, though). For anybody feeling tempted, let me say that the bsnes source code is a quite pleasant read, being quite tidy, especially compared to other emulators I've seen the source of. The main source of confusion is the use of co-threads, but you mostly shouldn't have to care about those when adding rerecording support (except for that one thing about adding runtosave somwhere).

Almost heartbreaking really, to read byuu's epic struggle to help people understand why accuracy does matter, ultimately doomed to fail no matter his tries. Either way, rerecording for bsnes would be pretty cool, though I have no idea how to code, unfortunately.
