http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTXO7KGHtjI&feature=player_embedded Watch in 1080p Well that certainly wasn't expected yet! A rather realistic looking 3D holographic rendition of an anime girl performing on stage in front of a freaking out huge crowd. I'm amazed at the technical quality of it. The character design could be more appealing (there are videos showing that it doesn't need to be monochromatic, for example), but still, I'd definitely want to see that live. Well, I would like more details on this technology, it is really interesting! One thing I noticed is that when there's something well lit behind her you can see through her, so that's one thing, and they say something about the need for mirrors, but I wanna know how to make something technically similar!

I think it's not an actual 3D holograph, since there's some reflective wall thingy in the background. Kinda cool though, I think.

Bolsters my faith in the 3ds despite nintendo not being involved at all. If this can be done convincingly for an entire theatre, imagine how well it can be done for just one person.

I think it is an actual 3D holograph. Notice how the character is facing the directions accordingly when there are different camera angles.

That wasn't 3D, it was projected on a flat screen. Which breaks the whole virtual idol thing.

All I have to say is...WOW. Now we need full motion (ala Rockman.exe's Pop Idol).

This is nothing new. I've seen such "screenless 3D motions" used in cloth ads etc. since years ago.

I am surprised at the quality. Thank God I live in Tokyo; I can catch one of these shows soon (I do assume there will be plenty of them here to catch). I wanted to see someone walk into the stage and walk through her or something. On a miscellaneous note, I know one of the singers for Hatsune “Vocaloid” Miku here. She is 15 and sings like crazy. She provides some of the voice samples they use and also does backup singing on-stage when needed. Hence Miku sounds like a little girl. L. Spiro

Yeah! Suck on that, CNN. EDIT - this also raises the question: how long till we can make an actual EMH?

This thread once again reminded me of those old hoaxing "space-/bio-/nano-tech not-so-far-future life".

This thing could be used to really scare the shit out of someone... Imagine a very dark place someone is walking by and then WHAM a ghostly figure in real form appears. Depending on the person there could be death by heart attack.

I don't think so. From Wikipedia: "Hatsune Miku has performed onstage in what appears to be a dynamic hologram but is likely to be just a 2D projection on a transparent screen based on Pepper's ghost technique". That assumption makes far more sense than believing that 3D holograms like that are possible with current technology. Anyway, I agree that the result is awesome. :o

It's a common misconception that it will be possible to create images in "thin air" using current, or even near future technology. Except for one device, but that only produces monochromatic white light, and achieves this by creating balls of white plasma in the air through the use of infra red lasers. It is possible to create 3D shapes in other media, other than air, by using certain materials that are exited by specific frequencies of infra red. When the beams cross, the material can have the capacity to emit visible light at that point. However, you won't be able to put your hand through it because there will be something in the way. If the atmosphere was made up of of one of these materials, it would be possible to make one of these holograms in air. These images are "real" and are no illusion. There are also swept volume displays, which are available today, where a film is rapidly swept through the viewing volume while a projector projects onto the film, which means that we see a 3d image. The image isn't truly 3D, because it only really exists at one 2D slice at any one time, but because we can only process so many images in a second, we see 3D. Probably the most common form of "3D" is where an image is shown differently at many different angles, so we see it as 3D, because each eye sees a different image. An example of this is a hologram. It's not truly 3D, because you have to have some sort of screen behind the image, so the image doesn't really exist in 3D space, it's just an illusion generated by seeing various angles of a screen.

Agreed that this doesn't seem to be "3D"; if you watch carefully she's restricted to one dimension on the stage, left and right. Also, it appears the camera switches sides of the stage, and she's shown as always facing the camera. I'm guessing it's just a screen with a projector trained on it. I've seen local theater troupes do that. Tangentially, this is from Japan. I find it extremely creepy because of that.

"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

You mean that if this was from anywhere else, it would not be creepy, but because it's from Japan, it's creepy because of that? I don't quite get it.

I admit, I'm kind of racist that way. :P
