After this game gets TAS'ed, I just have a thought. Any plans to have a second-quest attempt where Snake aims for best ending? I thought my best ending would be to have Snake survive two tortures (instead of skipping it) from Ocelot. Then Meryl takes the driver's seat at the escape route, where the game ends. Ocelot's torture will depend on whether the game will end with Ocelot or Meryl. Surviving the torture puts you in control of Meryl, while skipping the torture won't. If I wanted to end the movie, I would debate to end it either when Snake and Liquid reach the end of the escape route, or by fast-fowarding through the final Codec conversation after the end of the route.

I would have to say when Snake and Liquid reach the end of the route, I love the scenes in the game.

Wait a second! Look for a Japanese ISO of this game and try that for the post-Rex defeat. Perhaps Liquid's speech can be cut short now that he has to talk Japanese. Don't worry, I'll get a hold of the ISO myself.

There is one version of Metal Gear Solid that allows you to skip the Liquid cutscene completely - MGS:Integral, which is also the only Japanese version of the game with actual difficulty levels (as far as I know, Integral Extreme is identical to North American and European Extreme). Unfortunately, Integral does not appear to work on the current version of PCSX. I would also be required to make a new memory card for a run on the Integral version, and I would need to restart the run from scratch, something which at this point I want to avoid at all costs.

I just found this thread, and I'm sorry to hear about the heartbreak that the Liquid cutscene has presented. Have you been able to find out whether this loading issue happens in any run on this ISO? I've heard that some games are buggy enough that if the game is beaten with no saves and no deaths, the game can crash from it (see, for instance, the SDA SS run of Prince Of Persia: Two Thrones). Alternatively, would it be permissible to use a hacked copy of the ISO that skips that one cutscene? Unfortunately, I don't know much about hacking ROMs or ISOs to know if this is particularly feasible. I would suspect it might be... the Resident Evil 3 run uses a hacked game to fix some bug with the doors.

The re 3 run doesn't use a hacked game, you just need to have the resident evil cpu fix enabled under options. A different sound plug in might be worth trying. The crash bandicoot 2 run had a similar problem where the last cut-scene wouldn't play but changing the plug-in fixed it. If you switch sound plug-ins before that cut-scene will it load?

Hello everybody. Noobish post here. I want to give this game a bash. Not hardcore TAS to go on this site but for myself. A side project if you will. I have afew concerns. 1. To TAS I am to use this right? http://code.google.com/p/pcsxrr/ I downloaded and ran it but here is where the confusion begins. The quick tutorial states to use these plugins. http://code.google.com/p/pcsxrr/wiki/QuickTutorial I do not have the Graphics plugin stated. Here is what I have. I am sure the sound plugin is fine since it is an updated version. Can anyone link me to the one stated in tutorial or is the one I am using fine? 2. Actually getting the game to get past the two opening scenes (Konami logo and Konami Entertainment thing) was a head scratcher. I finally realised I had to enable SPU IRQ via Tools > Map HotKeys when playing. So I see the opening scene with the submarine and the audio is all messed up and I start getting alot of cd images popping up with dropped frames. The ISO's I am using are fine (both NTSC and Integral do the same thing). Played through NTSC ver using pSX start to finish. I tried selecting No Sound 0.4 as I thought it was to do with the SPU IRQ thing but CD popping up and dropped frames are still there. I tried a different CD-ROM plugin and mounting with Daemon etc and still same errors. Any config to get past this? 3. I'll ask about how to actually TAS if I can get the game running well. :P Thanks!

IrnBru, if you look a page or two back in this thread, you'll see that a run through this game was almost finished by theenglishman. However, the game got stuck infinitely loading during the loading of Liquid's cutscene after Metal Gear Rex. You said you managed to play through the whole game on NTSC? If that's the case, then you got that cutscene to load properly, and any help with getting it working in theenglishman's run would be great! Also, if you're interested in making your own run as well, then you and theenglishman can compare runs and strategies, etc. You may also want to look over theenglishman's last posted WIP to see if you have any comments. Good luck!

Answer: he used pSX. The cutscene issue is a PCSX problem, not an ISO problem. That said, there are other potential categories besides Big Boss Extreme that would make for an interesting run (newgame+, the prospect of a perfect C4 battle against Ocelot alone would make it worthwhile). I plan to finish this damn Big Boss run no matter WHAT it takes, as long as it can be run as a single PXM file and encoded nicely.

I dispute that anything involving PCSX-rr can be encoded nicely... :-D

Yeah I knew about the emulator crash and that is why I have Integral to try. It seems actually playing the game is fine and no cd pops up. I am going to be skipping every cutscene anyway and we'll see if the grey fox, mantis fight cutscene does it. I'll muck about with the config again and see if I can get rid of it. Categories I would like to see are the same as theenglishman but also plain Normal mode to compete with the 1:36:16 run by ZENO also on Normal on Jap version. I watched some of his run and it seems the original Japanese game (maybe also Integral) is much easier. One thing caught my eye was his Rex fight. All he does is throw a chaff and stands in the same place for the whole fight and fires stingers. Rex only opens fire near the end with machine gun but that misses him. I ran his Rex fight next to yours from Boss Rush edition and he was nearly 5 seconds faster. That is his final stinger about to defeat first form. The second fight he is nearly 6 seconds faster but this time he just lets the missiles from Rex hurt him. So he is approximately 10-11 seconds faster. My best guess is Japanese Normal is NTSC/PAL Easy mode or something. Obviously your run is on Extreme and Rex will act differently but I still can't see how he can stand there on Normal and do nothing while you need to run around. You can view the run here - http://homepage3.nifty.com/shin3/MGS.htm It is halfway down the page called "METAL GEAR SOLID -TIME ATTACK- played by PlayStation" and is Scene 8. It is a weird file format and you cannot seek in the video until it is all downloaded. Mines opens up in Windows Media Player then I save it to my desktop when fully downloaded and play in VLC.

The original Japanese release of MGS1 had only one difficulty mode (which I believe is equivalent to NTSC Normal) and Integral had all difficulties, including Extreme. Since boss HP is higher on harder difficulties, that would be why it was faster.

Sorry to thread necro, but its been over a year since this topic was posted, and I don't see a run of this game on the site. Could it be that its ACTUALLY taking that long? or have all the prospective runners given up? I think I may take it upon myself to give this a shot then... This run absolutely must be on the site.

The reason this run has not been finished yet is that there is a problem with PCSX, where it cannot load some of the later cutscenes. Until that is fixed, the game cannot be completed. In the meantime, watch the progress thus far: http://www.viddler.com/explore/adelikat/videos/644/

thats a damn shame. I was all hot and ready to do this. :( edit: i wish adelikat allowed this video to be downloadable. All the megaupload links to the encode are dead. I hate watching streaming video. I would much more prefer something I could watch through wmp or vlc so I can easily seek through parts.

In the meantime, has PCSX been updated since last year? If so, does this make this run work better? It would be cool if someone could figure out what the emulator glitch actually is and fix it.

any progress with the emulator problems? metal gear seem to have a history of being one of the last games with runs being published for their respective systems lol.

As far as I know, zeromus has fixed the glitch, and TEM is just waiting for a full release of PCSX to start work again.

Hey everyone, there's now a new approved PSX emulator: PSXjin. I don't know how viable it is to convert your movie file to use it, but would PSXjin fix the bug with Liquid's cutscene freezing?

I've done some PSXjin testing, and it's good enough for me to start work on MGS again. I'll post a movie eventually.

Here's my candidate for the hangar playaround. I spent quite a bit of time making sure it was hilarious as possible, showing all the AI exploits I know of and without being too repetitive. Have a looky!

With the new update to PSXjin, I had to restart the hangar sequence, so now it looks something like this: Link to video

The playground looks good! However, maybe I'm missing something. I thought movies in PCSX could be hexed to work with PSXjin. This would mean you wouldn't need to restart the run. Oh well, guess not.

That was hilarious and awesome :) Do you know how long it's going to take you to complete the game? I just finally completed the game for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I'm very much looking forward to this tas.
