Post subject: Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension

Hey guys, first post! I just started my first TAS yesterday, basically to figure out the control scheme and whatnot. I started using Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension, because, since it is a fighting game, it is a good starting spot for learning to TAS. However, I haven't seen any information about this game pretty much anywhere. Granted, it was never released in the US, but it was popular(?) enough to have 2 fan translations. Is there any reason, other than obscurity, that this game should not be TASed? I am using the fan translated hack, but if I were to ever submit a movie of it, I would use the untranslated version. Some initial discoveries that I have made, which may be wrong as I have not played the game as extensively as some others (read: Super Metroid): There isn't really any way to cancel, so combos are limited to the pre-designed super moves, such as Goku's quad kick or Vegeta's Super Dash. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of a difficulty setting. I remember playing through unassisted and having a lot of trouble beating Kid Buu at the end, because he is ridiculous. Maybe it just gets harder as the story progresses. AI is kind of deficient sometimes. For example, Cell would hardly attack me in my current run through. I had to bait him like crazy. Mostly, he stayed in the corner and threw punches, even when I was across the screen. Some of the moves have strange requirements. For example, any of the super Ki moves (Final Flash, Kamehameha, Special Beam Cannon) require quarter circles as well as left+right to be used in frame advance. The game requires crazy reflexes to pull off the moves anyway, but I could not get any moves to work until I "slid" on all the button presses. Other moves, such as Goku's Slash Down Kick, did not require quarter circles; just pressing the buttons one at a time was sufficient, with no diagonals required. Other than that, this is a pretty fun game which could make for an interesting video, if for no other reason than to see Frieza and the like get spanked by every warrior in the game. Any thoughts about this game? Should this become a full time project rather than a minor learning experience? It could be an undiscovered gem, or a hastily discarded piece of rubbish.

Fighting games, in general, have a hard time getting accepted. For whatever reason, they just aren't much fun to watch to the vast majority of TASers. Even movies which allow the character to morph into other characters get rejected (see any reject Shang Tseung Mortal Kombat Movie). The opposite of this is any fighting movie with significant and interesting glitches. So, if in your test run, you find cool glitches, your movie will have a much better chance. Anyway, my recommendation for this game is like any other that is weak in its publication chance - make a test run (doesn't have to even be the full game), upload it here, http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php and then post that to this thread. You probably won't get a ton of feedback, but the feedback will be good. I'm a dragon ball Z fan, so I'll do my best to watch WIPs.

I remember playing DBZHD a lot with friends on the GXSnes9x on the Wii. However I wouldn't even call it an average fighter. The only notable "feature" is that it's a Dragonball Z game. The fighting itself is really slow and clunky, but [for the sake of argument] that was in real time. Maybe it might be better with perfect reflexes? I have my doubts. Unless you can find some really interesting glitches, I don't believe the run would be very entertaining/accepted. You even said yourself that combos are limited. I hope you can find some good tricks and glitches though. Goodluck!
