Monkey Magic TAS by Hoandjzj
Emulator used: PCSX-RR v0.1.3

About the run:

  • Aim for fastest completed time
  • Take damage to save time
About the game: I FOUND many TRICKS to BEAT the game FASTER! They were:
  • Use game retry can skip some conversations
  • Gold Monkey causes more damage than normal
  • Jump then attack does double damage
  • Normal run is faster than jumping, using the Power Rod is faster than normal run, but Monkey will stun for a while, so in general, normal run is faster. To skip the stun, there are 4 ways: enter door, start conversation, climbing, or freeze the Monkey
  • Power Rod has no effect with bosses
  • If you fly on the cloud, you can skip the animation of doing thing, for example, load the gun, pull the switch...
  • There are 2 ways to infinite jumping:
  1. Jump and instantly attack, after the attack finished, jump again. This allows Monkey to "fly" in the air but the height cannot rise.
  2. Jump and freeze the Monkey then un-freeze, and jump again (you can do this to infinity after you get infinite power), with this way, the height can rise, so Monkey can jump to the very high.
  • With these tricks I skipped many tasks, and even many stages, improved the run by 49336 frames (my first attemp was 1:02:41)

About the movie:

Important note: I recorded the movie at normal speed (59.82 fps) and resolution 640x480, so if playback at another condition, the movie will turn wrong at about frame 23000~25000
  • Chapter 1: Enter Stone Monkey - Find Subodye's school and master your Magic Power
Around frame 9292: I had to pull the block a little to skip the conversation with the Bat
  • Chapter 2: Search for the Ultimate Weapon - Obtain the Power Rod
Around frame 53022: used "triple" jump to get the key#3 quickly
  • Chapter 3: Flower Fruit Mountain - Rescue your friends and defeat the Celestial Fleet
Around frame 66758: used "triple" jump to get through to the last stage At boss fight: I had to load the Gun normally at the first to keep it works
  • Chapter 4: Javan Mountain - Pass the Judges of the Dead and rescue Runlay
Found only 1 shortcut at the last stage (finding the Book#10)
  • Chapter 5: Jourley to the Celestial Heavens - Gain the Divine Power
This chapter is beaten very quickly after I had infinite power
The end!
(I'm sorry my English is bad, someone please fix if there are mistakes!)

I can't use kkapture to record movie!! It turns to wrong at some frames ~~! PSX is different than the other emulators! The sound and the frame didn't work together!

This game sounds pretty nice. I'm looking forward to an encode, if possible. Flygon, Wikipedia says that the video game was based off an animated series in the late '80s, not off the TV show in the '70s. However, either way you slice it, Monkey Magic seems pretty hilariously silly.

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. The constant mandatory revisiting of the training grounds was somewhat annoying. Disregarding that, this run was really, really entertaining. Voted yes. A question though; after picking up the 6th book of the judges of something, isn't it possible to get the checkpoint to the left before getting the book and then reset before the conversation? Or is there no time to pause?

Leaving the sound problems behind. The title "Monkey Magic" stays VERY true to it's run. Voting "Yeah why not"

The voice problems got very annoying, are they an emulation issue or an encoding issue? Other than that, this run looks very optimized and is pretty entertaining, so I will vote yes.

^^ Yeah that conversation cannot skip, even with reset! The conversation with Subodye when he's teaching Monkey cast spell on objects cannot skip too ^^!

I am so excited for this! Being a huge Monkey Magic fan, it's great to see one of the games being TASed. I enjoyed the game when I played it, so it will be nice to see it get dominated :). I'll have to wait for an encode to watch this, but if the play is as optimised as others are reporting, then expect a Yes from me. For those interested, there are three other PSX games based on the same original legend as this game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saiyuki:_Journey_West http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_Hero http://www.uvlist.net/game-104743-Fuuun+Gokuu+Ninjin (sometimes called Fuuun Gokuu Ninden) All three are available from eBay and other places, and all are really solid fun. Thanks for the TAS. Cheers, Franklint

The voice problems are unfortunate. However, the TAS is pretty cool. It reminds me of Tomba!, with its art style and sense of humor. The run has good pacing, and I like how the player's abilities become stronger as the run goes on, keeping things fresh. It was also nice to end with a glitched-out level. This was a lot of fun, and I vote Yes. I would love to see if an encode could be made with better voices, though.

Record the movie at 75 fps will make the sound smoother, but I had a problem with kkapture, I cannot use it at the moment, don't know what wrong :(

Have you tried this in PSXjin to see if the voices sound better?
Sage advice from a friend of Jim: So put your tinfoil hat back in the closet, open your eyes to the truth, and realize that the government is in fact causing austismal cancer with it's 9/11 fluoride vaccinations of your water supply.

Thanks! I've known PSXjin a few hours ago! And the sound is really better! From now I'll use PSXjin for my further TAS(es)!

This reminds me a lot of when I used to emulate the game in the Mac version of PCSX; the voices have the same problem. Hoandjzj, you are planning to resubmit this run with better sound? It would be a shame to lose it, because it's cool. Cheers, Franklint
