I was watching a few runs, and realized that some had commentaries (captions, really). I would like to do the same for my own runs. How do I do it?

.srt is the one that we use the most. There are other extensive formats like .ssa and .ass, but .srt definitely works with Youtube. All formats can be embedded into MKV. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubRip There are some programs to set subtitles. Personally, I use Aegisub. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtitle_editor

The .srt subtitle format is text based (and is quite intuitively structured), so you can create and edit your .srt-files in notepad, for example.

You can write them into .fm2 files and extract them to .srt via FCEUX, by the way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you say in the submission thread for your current Phantasy Star IV run that you weren't going to do anything like that because English isn't your first language? Or did you mean audio commentary specifically?

I was talking audio. My writing still needs a little works, but most people can understand what I write. So I would jsut have to download the program and include it with my run?

Closed captions in Youtube encodes work great, and I think we should do more of them. I extracted them from the fm2 file in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYFSjznEjgc

I didn't know there was a function in the emulator to do this, I actually wrote a script to do it for FF3j.

so what's easier : doing it on youtube or on the emulator? And either way, who should I send it to?

Only FCEUX supports emulator subtitles (though FatRatKnight has been making Lua scripts for subtitles). If you aren't using FCEUX, you won't be able to use that. Also, you don't "do" .srt subtitles on Youtube; you do the .srt first and then upload it to Youtube. What I would do is have someone encode it so you have the AVI. Then use a subtitle editor (such as Aegisub). This allows you to place subtitles with any timing you wish. Once you have all the subtitles, save (export) as .srt and post it in the submission thread. Hopefully, the publisher will mux the .srt with the video/audio into MKV, and the Youtube uploader will upload the .srt as a caption file for the Youtube video (this can be done any time). Notice that Aegisub supports .ssa/.ass. This is basically a super fancy version of .srt, but Youtube does not support it. If you don't want to wait for the AVI, you can do it manually. You'll need to take the frame numbers, divide by fps, and add logo time (2 seconds).

Aegisub can export to SRT by the way, so you can use that to make the subtitles as well if you'd like.
