Sorry, if it has been mentioned already, but once the N3DS version is released, can it be played on Desmume? If so, would that be a good choice to TAS?

Sarcasm sure is a nice way of expressing things right? Anyway no, desmume can't emulate 3DS yet.

You do notice the irony of you using sarcasm, to berate me for using sarcasm, don't you? Anywho some people say there are no stupid questions. jlun2 just proved these people wrong. So sarcasm really was the only possible response.

The irony was intended. As for 'stupid questions', if you aren't going to handle answering someone properly then don't bother doing it at all. Not everyone keeps tabs on emulator development, nor should they need to.

You don't need to to know about emulator devleopment, to know that a DS emulator won't be able to emulate 3DS games. You just need a little shred of common sense for that. So yeah it was the stupidest question ever asked. Or certainly one of the stupidest.

Uh, I know a certain desmume dev who is working on implementing 3DS support, since the CPUs are similar, so it wasn't a dumb question. You are just being an uneducated ass at this point.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, only an off topic one. This is a legit question that is on topic.

More than likely home brew. Also, Slowking was definitely being an ass.

It may have an extended instruction set...or just include the CPU the DS used. Unfortunately I'm too lazy to go look it up :P.

Just FYI Nintendo has gone both ways before: The GBC included a beefed-up version of the Z80 derivative used in the original Game Boy, all GBA versions except Micro included that same chip along with the new ARM7 chip so they could play old GBC and GB games, and the DS and DS Lite included both a new ARM9 chip and the old ARM7 chip so they could play old GBA games (but they did not include the Z80 derivative necessary to play GBC and GB games).

It is not just two cpus, it is three graphics engines, one audio engine and one wifi engine.

how did that go? I’m speedrunning SM3DL lately and TASing it would be great

I would also like to hear some information on this. I can see 3DS emulation happening someday, but not any time soon. It took like what, 4 years to get proper DS emulation working? Besides, I believe the 3DS completely new hardware so I'm not sure if DeSmuME will even support it. Seems unlikely.

The 3DS, preliminary investigation I THINK reveals, is based on the DSi - but due to all the encryption, even if it is emulated, you certainly won't be able to play retail games until if/when that is cracked.

Mind telling how exactly is it based on the DSi? As far as I'm aware both are ARM-based and have two screens, but that's where the similarities end.

3DS has DSi mode available. It can play DSiware games. It also has a camera. It also uses the same power adapter (YAY NINTENDO, YOU FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!).

Yes, DSi could also play DS games, DS could play GBA games, and GBA could play GB games, but that doesn't mean they were all built on the same hardware/architecture. Backwards compatibility can be achieved through different means. For one, it's certain 3DS's graphics processor is much superior to DS/DSi. It also has input methods the DSi didn't have, such as a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and an analog stick/pad. Games that make use of all of this are probably going to be a nightmare to TAS, heh.

Wait for a newer revision of the 3DS (like a 3DS Lite or something). I'm guessing it will use a different charger.

Underneath, I believe it's been found (by neimod who is currently working on RAM dumping/modification) they use similar memory addresses as ports, etc. Obviously the 3DS probably has MORE hardware, but I suspect with my rather limited (but still existing!) understanding of the whole thing, it's a similar thing to the Wii, which is a Gamecube with lots of hardware added and existing hardware improved (whilst remaining compatible), and an extra processor thrown in for good measure ;) The fact that ambassador GBA games have barely any 3DS features available is rather revealing - I would predict the 3DS actually goes into some GBA mode, similar to the DS's. This would certainly imply that the system itself is compatible enough to be able to do that without emulation, etc.
