I realize in the gens rerecording emulator there is a splicing function, could someone point me to a tutorial or post with information on how this works? I'm working on my first project and I want to edit an earlier level without reworking all the following levels. I tried the forum search but no luck, thanks.

I don't know the answer your question per se, you should take into account that in most cases it's just not possible to edit a previous segment of a movie without causing desyncing of the later parts. There are exceptions to this, but they are relatively rare. Things like random number generators usually depend heavily on what has been done before (such as timing and key presses; changing even one key press or changing the timing of something even by one frame can heavily affect subsequent random numbers). There are also many things other than the RNG that can be affected (such as when enemies are spawn and which actions they take). As said, there are semi-rare circumstances where changing a previous segment of a movie does not affect what comes later, but don't be surprised if that's not the case.

What exactly is the splice function for then?

It's for exactly what you think it's for. It works perfectly, assuming your run will sync after editing past input. As Warp said, such cases are probably rare, but they do exist. Sorry for giving you another run-around response which doesn't answer your original question. I also don't know how to use a splicing function. Hopefully someone with more experience can answer.

There's a wiki page with some information. http://tasvideos.org/InputFileEditing.html Please note that editing an earlier level may not work. That is, it may cause the later levels to desync. I am not aware of how the splicing function work in Gens.

Thanks for the link FractalFusion. At any rate, it looks too complicated for my inexperienced self. I'll just rework the stages in my game from the earliest mistake and see how things work out.
