Glitches and tricks

Flying glitch

When you glide close to a curved wall, you can use this wall to gain height. With this, you can reach some areas faster than with the intend route.

Instant max speed

Instead of just running when you have a weak speed, you can add a jump at the first frame of the run in order to reach immediately your maximum velocity.

Dragons release

When Spyro release a dragon, he goes to a specific spot before the cutscene with the dragon start. That's why you need to release this dragon as close as you can of this spot.

Boost jump

After a charge or supercharge attack, if you jump as soon as you can, your jump will preserve a lot of your previous momentum.

Level by level comments

Artisans Homeworld

I don't release first dragon of the game since his cutscene is long and can't be skip.

Sunny Flight

It's important to hit a wall or the water after that Spyro destroy the last item, because this skip the "victory cutscene". In all the speedways, a high height means a slow velocity.

Artisans Homeworld

/

Stone Hill

Once you strat an aerial charge attack, the only ways to stop it is to reach the ground or to glide. That's why the pit part seems a little bit strange.

Artisans Homeworld

/

Town Square

First egg, so easy to get with this route that it is hard to miss it.

Artisans Homeworld

Flying glitch to reach the next dragon faster.

Peace Keepers

You probably don't notice this if you have already watched the run, but for some strange reasons, I don't get the blue gem from one of the Peace Keeper I killed. This was discover long time after I finish this part, and since hex-editing seems to don't work well with this game, I accept this obvious (or not) mistake. After this, I do my best to not reiterate a similar mistake, and it seems that I have successed.

Dry canyon

/

Peace Keepers

/

Cliff Town

Flying glitch to reach the purple gem without use the magic whirlwind.

Peace Keepers

Flying glitch to not have to destroy the big rock with the canon.

Night speedway

/

Peace Keepers

Second egg, I choose this one and the Wizard Pead second one as the two "non obligatory" eggs since I will not be able to get the Wizard Peak first egg.

Doctor Shemp

As all the boss levels (except Toasty), you can get a high number of gems in a short amount of time.

Peace Keepers

/

Ice cavern

There are many possible routes for this level, but the one I have chosen seems to be the fastest.

Peace Keepers

/

Magic Crafters

Third egg.

Alpine Ridge

Timing was really close to reach the 4th wizard without waiting.

Magic Crafters

Fourth egg.

High Caves

Alternative route to get the 35th dragon as this route gives 12 gems for a very small amount of waste time if compare to the supercharge route.

Magic Crafters

I have got the purple gem with the supercharge, so Crystal Flight will come after Wizard Peak.

Wizard Peak

5th egg. In this level, for some reasons, Sparx catch the fat gnorcs gems if Spyro kill them close enough. This new supercharge route make one egg of the level uncatchable.

Magic Crafters

Here I Have entered the portal on the other side so the dragon was release without any cutscene. It's the only place in the game where it can be done.

Crystal Flight

In all the speedways, the objects positions is not the same if you start the speedway by using the portal than if you restart the level. In this speedway, you can fire 6 planes instead of 5 at the begining only in the first case, so the planes are a little bit delay and you can destroy the first arche right to left instead of left to right.

Magic Crafters

/

Blowhard

Take domage to destroy the explosive chests faster.

Magic Crafters

/

Beast Makers

I have gotten one butterfly to use Sparx one more time

Wild Flight

The other possible route is to not destroy the first boat in the begining but destroy it right after the 7th arche. But since the boat is a little bit delay for the same reason that in Crystal Flight, I would be too fast to be able to destroy it without a more important bend than if I destroy it at the begining.

Beast Makers

/

Misty Bog

One of the hardest level of the game. Frogs sometimes hit you when you charge attack them and once a plant rush at you, you must burn it or it WILL eat you (and the cutscene is extremely long). Fortunately the wild boars are here to help you make this level faster.

Beast Makers

/

Tree Tops

If the velocity of the supercharge wasn't enough to reach the 48th dragon, I could use a supercharge boost in order to increase the velocity by 5 units and reach it (a full jump then make an aerial charge attack that hit the ground where the supercharge area start). I tried my best to go to the red thief island without a red supercharge, but even a supercharge boost + yellow supercharge + flying glitch wasn't enough to make it, so I have died in order to restart at the 49th dragon location (and also restore Sparx).

Beast Makers

Little shortcut that saves some times.

Metalhead

I have luck manipulated Metalhead in the second area to destroy two power poles, including one which is an important time consuming.

Beast Makers

I must get the red gem before the balloonist cutscene begin, because no gems can be get once you start a cutscene with a balloonist.

Dream Weavers

/

Jacques

By far the fastest level to complete my gem collection since it takes a lot of times to go to the Wild Flight portal. I have also gotten a butterfly for Sparx.

Dream Weavers

I have tried many ways and this one seems to be the fastest to talk to the balloonist.

Gnasty's World

This dragon must be release or the Twilight Harbor portal will not open.

Gnorc Cove

Pictures should be enough to understand.

Twilight Harbor

A good combinaison of the properties of the supercharge jump and the flying glitch.

Gnasty Gnorc

The input end with a boost jump.

Possible improvements

Of course a better gem route, maybe a better dragon route (the fourth dragon in Misty Bog can be an idea, but he is really at a bad position). In this run, my target was to not waste more than 20 frames per gem (instead of 12 frames per gem in Spyro 2).
The use of an analog stick instead of digital inputs, this is especially true for all the flight levels.

Special thanks

Crash41596 and ratchet5 for their youtube run (PAL version) in 54:23 and 57:22 , I have used them in all the making of the run to find the best compromise between speed and gems

Same here. I'm looking forward to the submission text, too, whenever he adds it. EDIT: Very entertaining and fast-paced movie. I can tell this took some planning and hard work. Good job, voting yes!

It was quite impressive. SDA time (PAL) is 20 minutes slower.

The route planning for this must have been a nightmare :D. Overall, the run is fast-paced, has some creative solutions and is very entertaining. Yes vote.
Even the best player is limited by the speed of his fingers, or his mind's ability to control them. But what happens when speed is not a factor, when theory becomes reality?

Wow, I can't believe you finished it already, and already published before I knew it :O Will watch the last bit I haven't seen already right away! Edit: Just finished watching, it looked brilliant, I was glad that you went into Tree Tops, and kept on overtaking the green thief, skipping Gnorc Cove was brilliant, and I actually had my fingers crossed that you'd use the supercharge in someway to skip twilight harbour. Last of all, overtaking Gnasty Gnorc multiple times was enjoyable, and I'm glad you managed to finish this TAS, which looked very optimised all the way through :)

I have a feeling there could've been some optimization done in a few areas and like you said, with so many gem routes, it's unlikely that all of the ones you chose were the best. Regardless, great job man. The Gnasty Gnorc chase gave me a nice chuckle. Yes vote once I'm done being a lurker.

This run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxJpr__Xrwk Clocks in at 41:46 That's from Start of Player Controlling Spyro. But still, that's pretty decent for a real time run.

Yes, but this TAS is 2 years old and many many new strats were found when speedrunning of this game was picked up actively soon after it was published, so this really isn't surprising at all.

There's also a recently discovered glitch where you can clip into the side of the closed metal dragon head around Gnasty Gnorc level, which would speed up any% even further.
