I decided to do this game because I like it a lot and I think I know enough to do a TAS on my favourite GameboyAdvance game.
And, I choose to do the second game of the cartridge but maybe later I will do the first game too.

Game objectives / info

  • Emulator used: vba-v24m-svn-r422
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Take damage to save time
  • Use hard difficult
  • One player

About the game

  • This game is an associations of two Astérix games : "Astérix et Cléopatre" and "Astérix et Obélix" (FR name).
  • There are only two jump in this game, small jump and big jump.
  • Running is more faster than walking.
  • When you are hit by an enemy, you are pushed back but if you jump you just take the damage without animations.
  • The hitbox are very strange, you can be touched from very far.

Tricks used

  • It is faster to fall from a ladder than to descend with the hands
  • Auto-fire ( B ) has been used for the mini-games.
  • The big punches requires 18 frames pressing B to become active
  • The second jump requires 6 frames pressing A to become a big jump.
  • I try to take as few stars as possible to avoid losing time on screen at the end of each level.

Other comments

I think in the second level of "Hispania" I lost a few frames when climbing up the stairs.

I'm pretty sure the English name of this game is "Asterix & Obelix - Bash Them All!" And the ROM name appears to be "Asterix & Obelix - Bash Them All! (E).gba". EDIT: This run is entertaining and looks nicely optimized. Voting Yes.

For the record, it appears this game only has an (E) release (in case anyone is wondering).

I changed the game name to the English name, since the game has an official English name (Asterix & Obelix - PAF! Them All!). Per the Publisher Guidelines, "if there is no USA version of the game, but there is an English release in another region (such as the UK), use the game name of that release." ..but overall, I found the run pretty boring to watch. Voting meh, but leaning towards No.

This was interesting... Unfortunately I got bored about halfway through the run. The game seems to emphasize fighting given the ridiculous amount of enemies seen throughout it. However, given the nature of the TAS, we get to see almost none of that. While the TAS seems decently optimized, it is a very repetitive game. This is especially true in the olympic events where it requires you to do the same thing multiple times in a row. I did manage to watch the entire run though. I would vote yes to the optimization, no to the entertainment value. I haven't voted yet, but the result would most likely be a meh. I want to test some things out before I vote.
Current thoughts: Hachiemon (J) for GBA.

What's the point in this version of the game, over the SNES version of Asterix & Obelix, which looks and sounds nicer?

Personally, I prefer the music from the GBA version and I find the game easier on SNES.That's why I have chosen the GBA version.

I should've watched this a while ago. I finally got a chance to see this movie. Unfortunately, I don't think it makes a good game for TASVideos. The game does have nice graphics. The music is comforting. However, there's not enough variety in gameplay. The damage-canceling trick is nice, but it makes the game too repetitive. Your level of play is good, but the game doesn't provide enough chances for you to make an impressive run. In more detail, here are some good points: * It's funny how you barely win the javelin toss and kick the extra points. * The catapults at the end are cool. Bad points: * The routes through the stages are very obvious. There isn't much apparent challenge, and hence the run looks less impressive. * You have enough health in each stage that you don't have to manage your health carefully. * No boss battles. Miscellaneous questions: * Why do you always choose Asterix? If Obelix runs the same speed in the football game, it would've been fun to choose him. * Why do you still complete the touchdown in football once you have the winning score? I'm not quite sure what to vote yet.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Thank you for your answer, For your first questions : Obelix is slower than Asterix, For example, I finished the first level with over 200 frames slower with Obelix. But yes, I just remembered that they are going at the same speed in the rugby level, so I lost two frames here. And for your seconds question : If i want to finish this level, I have to score 4 touchdown or it's gameover.

It's faster to choose French because it's the first option on the select language screen. Choosing English would be slower because he would have to move the cursor to it.

Call it a speed/entertainment tradeoff then.

This run is quite close to a pacifist run, just don't kill the fishes... This seemed to be really optimized, but has some boring parts. Also, the fastest way for all the action is very obvious. I'll give it a meh. Although the language choice doesn't really matter for this game, I think we should add a rule for this kind of ROMs, like this If the game contains multiple languages, English should (or must) be chosen. In my opinion, a "two player 100% + maximum kills" SNES run of this game would be more interesting. For example, optimizing the bonus levels can be really complicated, and there would be a lot more action throughout the run. (And Asterix and Obelix have the same speed on the SNES.)

We also have rule about exception, so in end it's still up to the judge to accept or decline that particuliar point.

The Track and Field part (12:25 ~ 15:30) was horribly boring... anyway, the run itself looks KIND OF optimized but as mklip2001 mentioned, I'm not sure how you managed your health and so maybe there could be some more improvments here and there. I'm not sure what to vote since it does looks nice (enough for a yes) but not as optimized to be publishable (Meh vote) and the Track and Field part is a solid No vote... still, I think I won't vote on this one for now.

I'll be honest, I liked this TAS and its variety. It's a platformer, a sport game, it has a little bit of everything, and the execution seems to be well done, even though it doesn't seem that hard indeed, but I never played the game so I can't tell. I believe this would be a great addition to the site, so I give it a strong yes vote. On a non-TAS point of view, the music is indeed awesome, while the ending is kinda weak. Neither of those points influenced my yes vote, of course, which is based only on the way he played.

Mixed opinions about this run, the game is OK yet some parts are boring to watch. Though, having sports and platformer in different stages add a little something that is nice. I just regret that the sport stages are so repetitive. Yet, it's encouraging, and looks good enough to me. And always good to see fellow french members posting about french games (play "La Marseillaise" here in your head, thanks (of course I'm kidding)). And the music is just awesome. Like for the GB Smurfs game, Infogrames really had this Amiga-like chiptune which sounds good to my ears, but I may have weird tastes. Yes for me.

Are we that desperate for frame optimizations in a 21 minute movie? Stuff like this really annoys me. On the run itself, I had to reboot my computer before I was able to finish watching the run, but I felt like I had to force myself to watch it. Since I didn't see the whole movie, I'm not putting a vote in the poll, but it felt really boring to me (and the decision to leave the game text in French didn't really help, although I didn't see a whole lot of text in the first place).
