Many have shared your opinion on the community's forum. I can't write better than he does and he's one of the few people who volunteered to help in writing the reviews, so while some don't agree with what he writes, I appreciate his help, and it certainly makes some discussions more interesting. Also, he and Norrin_Radd have split the remaining reviews 50/50.

I liked the reviews as well, they have given a lot of insight into the songs and composers. I just don't get why Jace went and did what he did... Oh well, can't wait to hear more of these songs!

Well, if nothing else, it acknowledges the fact that nostalgia is having an effect on the rankings, which should be a sop to all the "but why isn't my favorite game ranked higher?" complaints. :)

Less than 50 left and so far no sign of Maniac Mansion.

Was that on the Famicom Disk System's sound chip? And was LXXX XXXXT included on that list? I want to know what that game is.

Now this totally baffles me. I thought the reviews were there to help people notice small things about the songs they wouldn't have noticed otherwise and to help tell some trivia and other such things. Now what Jace is doing with the Needle Man review is just basically saying "You people are stupid for choosing this song to be this high on the list!" and in my opinion, that's really inappropriate. Why oh why does Jace review songs that he doesn't want to be on the list then?
I found that particular review by Jace to be very refreshing. He addressed a common complaint about the list, and noted why he thought it was valid criticism. (And he's absolutely right, too) I'm pretty sure that if any of the other reviewers really liked that particular song, they would have written something complimentary about it. (Even subpar, primitive tracks like the LoZ theme got this) Is writing the truth "inappropriate" because it might offend some fanboys? Hell no.

Forty tracks left and not a single Follin tune? This is going to be interesting.

I really like #61 - Akumajou Densetsu: Overture (Dracula's Room)! :) I had completely missed this track from the Castlevania series. Also, for music nerds:

I have no idea what's going on in this song rhythmically.
It seems to be 11/8 all the way, until the last 4 bars before it loops. There it switches to 9/8, 7/8, 6/8, 6/8.

Oh, yeah, I remember a track from Little Samson that used 11/8 time.

Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Apparently the rating system is still in place. Not that rating songs has any relevance to the results at this point but it's actually a lot of fun. The system is really well made.

I'm happy to see the technodrome's theme in tmnt2 ranked high. I still remember the first time I got there and was greeted by that incredible track. I just stopped playing to listen to the music. Also, the intro from tmnt: I used to turn on my NES just to play it LOUD!

Thanks! :) Indeed, rating the tracks is long, but making a personal Top 100 has been even more gratifying to me than the official list. See this post for links to the ratings you have done so far, a list of the ~1725 tracks, and even personal rating statistics if you want! :)

Love the list, but my left eye keeps twitching uncontrollably every time I see track # 59 followed #58 and then #30 followed by #29.

I just started looking through the list, and I'm not surprised that the Mega Man 2 title screen music and the Blaster Master Area 1 music were put on the list. The former is both catchy and well-written, and the latter has a bassline that really stands out, as Jace pointed out in his review. I really liked the TMNT introduction theme and how, as Norrin_Radd explained, it sounds totally like a real performance. I'm really enjoying listening to all these songs from games I've never played and reading the analyses from the reviewers under each track. Their comments help me appreciate the music in a whole new way. Thanks for sharing this list with us, juef!

I can't figure out - with 800 (NTSC) NES games, and even more Famicom games - most games on this list are repeated numerous times over... Shatterhand takes up 10 or so spots, Castlevania 2 & 3 another 10, and Mega Man 2 & 3 take up another 10.... There don't seem to be many games out of nowhere...

Yeah, I wish there were more tracks from obscure and/or underappreciated games... one great choice that I didn't expect was the Gauntlet title theme, which is kind of addicting in a Bach fugue sort of way. One thing that surprised me is how high up the Simon's Quest tracks are on the list... I've always considered the music in that one to be dull and forgettable next to 1 and 3. I guess lots of other people don't see it that way...

And the latest 5 tracks (#15-#11) are all Megaman or Castlevania tunes. Oh well. I'm with DarkKobold: I was hoping to be introduced to a bunch of tunes I'd not heard before that were nonetheless awesome. Instead I'm hearing a bunch of familiar and merely good tunes.

Maybe we can make a top nes music list that doesn't include music from the best selling titles. Actually, even some famous games have music not featured on the list. I doubt the theme for the last fight in double dragon 2 will show up (it should!). I would've rated higher chip and dale, mc kids, silver surfer, gun nac, street fighter 2010, yo! noid than so many shatterhand, megaman and castlevania music. Actually, those titles I just mentioned aren't the top obvious choices, but are still rather known. Perhaps it's tough to dig quality music in lesser known titles because obviously not much work went into those.

Good idea. It'd be interesting to repeat this experiment, excluding all games who managed to get a song (or more than 2 songs, or whatever) into the list the first time around. :)

Yeah, I'm not sure why Flash Man from MM2 is #18. Though I like that song and Mega Man music in general, I'm sure there were better songs on the NES.

You guys have very good ideas :) Indeed, such a project should probably be redone, ignoring some of the obvious tracks or popular games (which brings nostalgia to so many people...). When all tracks are reavealed, a complete list of the rankings will also be. Just above #115 are many very good tracks in lesser known games, such as Jackal, Mitsume ga Tooru, Toukon Club, Ferrari - Grand Prix Challenge, ... I'll even say that through this project, I have discovered many of my now favorite NES tracks, many of them from games I had never even heard of before! Choujin Sentai - Jetman track 9 Dragon Fighter track 4 Sky Shark track 1 Heavy Barrel track 32 And just so many more...

yeah, the only track that i found out about due to this list and really love now is the madara track (i had listened to this soundtrack before but somehow Ma-Da-Ra didn't stand out to me in the past... i must've been half-asleep when i listened to it, this is a top famicom song!) songs 200-116 will be up after the last two batches are revealed, right? or are they available somewhere already? but yeah, it's disappointing to see so much mm3/cv2/cv3, i was hoping for more oddball picks in the main list.
