This is an outrage. When did parents lose the ability to explain "No, son/daughter, you actually shouldn't eat cookies all the time like Cookie Monster sings. His songs are just for fun and there are other foods out there you can eat." For anybody who loved Sesame Street and especially Cookie Monster check out this link to a newspaper article. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/lifestyle/219386_nocookie.html Some people really try to protect children to the point of absurdness in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, protecting them from voilence, swearing, and etc are good things, but protecting them from Cookie Monster?! <Sigh> Your friendly news hound, Ev

I panicked when I first heard about this idea, but reading the article shows me that it's not nearly as drastic as some people might think. The Cookie Monster will continue to be The Cookie Monster and he will still be known for gorging himself on cookies. Tempering that image with a message of "moderation," as The Demonic Dr. Bill Frist said, is a fine idea. This reminds me of that non-issue over SpongeBob Squarepants being "gay." It was all a distortion of someone's objection to a video using popular children's characters (like SpongeBob) to promote tolerance. Instead of challenging his objection to tolerance (which seems like an odd position to have these days), the media claimed he thought SpongeBob was gay. Similar thing here: a press release says Cookie Monster will help promote healthier eating habits and the media screams "OMG what about teh COOKIES?!?"

Actually, he did. He claimed that the promotion of tolerance was a thinly-veiled pro-homosexual agenda. This is because he was a right-wing bible-thumping nutjob.

Claiming the tolerance video promoted a "homosexual agenda" is not the same as implying SpongeBob the character is gay. That's my point. He said what you said but the media reported it as "This guy thinks SpongeBob is gay." Very different assertions.

You're right, my bad. I was thinking of the whole Tinky Winky thing at the same time. Which is probably what everyone else in the media was doing. :)

OH GOD NO Cookie Monster, what have they done to you!? You were once my lifelong idol, but now you are a twisted mockery of what you once were... Farewell, cookie monster. To me, you are gone...you will be missed.

Dude, what the hell? One day, a long time ago, a friend and I were channel surfing. We had been up so late that it was morning, and we flipped to an episode of Sesame Street. On that episode, in our delirium, we saw Cookie Monster painting a picture of a cookie. My friend said, "he's going to eat the painting at the end," and I quickly agreed with him. And yes, Cookie Monster ate a painting of a cookie. What threw both of us off is that he also went so far as to eat his palette. Neither of us expected that. Cookie Monster is just a raving lunatic with a fetish for cookies. Kids like that because it reminds them of the kind of psychos they meet in every day life. And my favorite character was Oscar the Grouch. Why don't they promote children's health by having Oscar make fun of all the fat kids? Then they can do a counting calories song. Hey, I'm starting to have fun with this...

Watch... soon they're going to get rid of my absolute favorite character Snuffalufagus (or Snuffy as he is normally called) since he's Bigbird's imaginary friend. And "everbody" knows children shouldn't have imaginary friends... That will be a sad, sad day... :'(

I though only Bigbird could see him. I might be wrong about that though, its been forever since I've sat down and watched it. However, I have to admit, if it were still on the air when I settle down and start a family of my own I definitely wouldn't mind watching it again with my kids. I wouldn't go overboard like some parents though. But that's way down the road for me...

Originally, yes, nobody believed Big Bird about Snuffy, but he did eventually get seen a year or two after he was introduced.

I agree with the article. To have Cookie tone down his cravings is akin to having Oscar shut up and be polite. It would also be like having Mr. Forgetful take ginseng pills to improve his memory. The gimmick is lost, the character is compromised and the humor derived from them is cheapened. It's insulting to change longstanding characters in this way. However, there IS a way to handle the situation so that everyone is happy. No matter how often people keep reminding Mr. Forgetful, it always slips his mind two seconds later. That's the character we all know and love. How about if the same was applied to Cookie? The residents of Sesame Street would try, try oh so very hard to teach Cookie that cookies aren't a staple. After a lesson, Cookie would stare at this character for a second with a perplexed look on his face. After that, he would scream, "COOKIE!"" and go and his thing. There. The network execs got to get their message across, and Cookie Monster gets to stay Cookie Monster. Everyone is happy. The problem is people underestimate how smart kids are. They know when something is merely a gag, a quirk. They know Cookie Monster is obsessed with cookies. That's him, and he's funny for being so "stupid." Geez...
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

The article in question (via the link) is about Cookie Monster eating healthier foods in addition to cookies. I feel the changes to the character are being misinterpreted/overstated, similar to the "SpongeBob is gay" situation that wasn't really about SpongeBob being gay.
