So, this is my first post on the forums, though I've been following the TAS community for quite a while. I'm happy to join such a friendly and interesting group of people making videos for my entertainment and I hope to get into doing some videos of my own soon. Here's my question: how old does a topic have to be before posting in it is considered bad form? I have an idea for a "challenge" run on a game, but the last post on said game's topic was a few months ago and I don't want to be rude by reviving it out of turn, so to speak.

As long as your post is on-topic, and the topic is well defined (as opposed to something like "I have a question"), there is no limit. Even a 8 years old thread is fine.

Thanks a lot! I know the question was probably a silly one, but life experience has taught me that it's better to ask before doing something than to act and be wrong.

There are many online forums which have an anti-necroposting policy (in other words, the older the thread, the more shunned it is if someone "revives" it by posting to it). Some forums even go so far as to automatically lock threads that have had no traffic in some time. Fortunately this kind of policy has not been adopted here, and I really see no reason why it should. There's nothing wrong in posting to old threads. (In fact I'd say it's actually recommended in cases where, as Bisqwit said, you want to talk about the same topic, and thus the context is relevant. It avoids the "this was already discussed in this another thread" responses.)

It's a good idea to note in your post that you're bumping the thread though. Otherwise people tend to not notice the post dates and start responding to arguments that died out years ago.
