I play EarthBound on an emulator. Pretty soon I may get the cart, and I have a SNES.
I play it on an SNES emulator for the Wii with a GameCube controller. Savestates don't seem to work, so it's like playing it on a real console. I almost got an SNES and the game, but all the EarthBound carts on eBay are really expensive.

I know! Why does EarthBound have to be so expensive? On Amazon, it costs $19,000 for ONE cart. Its ridiculous! Anyways, I mean't getting it at Treasure Island Flea Market, if they have it. They have new games every week.

It's supply and demand. You may be able to find a seller on Digial Press (they will charge you quite a bit) or Starmen.net

It's hard to choose, but the choice would have to be between Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger and Tales of Phantasia. There are probably others that I haven't played but would probably also make the list.

Chrono Trigger or EarthBound. Terranigma is better still if you want to count Action RPGs. FF3 should probably be in there somewhere, but I haven't played through it in 5 - 6 years.
By FF3 he means FF6. Obviously.
Stupid game renumbering issues.
I know about the numbering chaos that was the US releases of FF 1-3, and I wrote that as a jab. A jab with a point: Please use the actual numbering unless you want to cause confusion.
Those were strange times. American entertainment companies that imported foreign products had sometimes strange notions of how they should be imported. Think about Japanese anime, for instance. Some companies had this strange notion that Americans are morons and wouldn't understand nor appreciate foreign cultural references and customs in a TV show, and thus they often re-edited the shows to "localize" them and make them more palatable to their (mostly imaginary, I assume) American audience. Sometimes they went to incredible lengths and basically butchered the original work until it was completely unrecognizable (the producer Carl Macek being probably one of the most infamous examples, and the source of the fan term "macekre".)
Ok, that deviates quite a lot from the original topic of game series numbering, but I think it's related. This mentality of that time also had the notion of a strong disconnect between the two countries (this was, after all, an era slightly before the popularity of the internet.) Since they were not importing all the games in the FF series, they seemingly wanted to create an illusion of continuity nevertheless, by renumbering them. That decision has been really unfortunate. When Square has decided in more recent times to re-release upgraded versions of all the original games, the original numbering is now confusing to people who only knew the American numbering. When you see "Final Fantasy II" on the shop, is it the original Japanese II, or is it the American one?
At least they stopped this renumbering by the time of FF VII... (which of course introduced a strange jump from FF "3" to FF 7 in the American market...)
But I'm rambling again...

I'm glad this topic is called Favourite SNES RPG instead of BEST SNES RPG. Some people will never admit their favourite game is a piece of crap.
I haven't played many RPGS on the SNES but I think it's very easy to say that my favourite is Chrono Trigger.
It's also pretty safe to say that it is the best RPG on the console.

I know many people may like FF6 or Earthbound or even SMRPG (argh) better but that's just THEIR impressions of the games... back then they probably didn't know better and that game really stood out.
It's perfectly OK if you say these are your favourites.
But compared to CT, they suck.

To me, Chrono Trigger is a great RPG. But there's SO many Fantasy style RPG games out there. Not so many modern/Sci-Fi ones. I don't really enjoy Fantasy as much as Sci-Fi so I love Earthbound more.

Here is my detailed ranking of favorites.
1. Chrono Trigger. You mean I can start a new game and use my characters from the last playthrough?!?
2. Final Fantasy VI. So many different ways to play. Super repeatable. Easy to come up with personal challenges, etc.
3. Link to the Past. Not considered an RPG by many.
4. Dragon Quest V. Best RPG never translated into English (until Nintendo DS). Recruit monsters into your party before Pokemon was around.
5. Final Fantasy IV. Great story. Why can't I keep the twins in my party? Why?!?
6. Super Mario RPG. So many mini games. Interactive battle dynamics.
7. Dragon Quest VI. Deep story, but a little too weird for me.
8. Breath of Fire II. Fun, but drags in places. Some characters are too weak to really use.
9. Secret of Mana. I want this ranked much higher, but it is too darn hard to hit the bosses with weapon attacks.
10. Illusion of Gaia. Very creative gameplay and story.
11. Secret of Evermore. Why should I level up alchemy formulas? I can kill everything with weapon attacks too easily.
12. Actraiser. Often not considered an RPG. Really fun to play in a day though.
13. Lufia 1. The dungeons go on and on and on. The random encounters keep coming and coming and coming.
14. 7th Saga. You mean I'm stuck here because I can't defeat the monsters outside? I have to restart?
Obviously, this is only of games I've played. Don't hate me because I've never finished Earthbound.

EarthBound is definitely my favorite (if it wasn't obvious). Even without my nostalgia and bias, I still attest that it's an amazing game. Sure the battle system can be basic, but many other aspects more than make up for that.
Illusion of Gaia is probably second for me (it wasn't always). The game is really dark and weird. Some translation sloppiness kind of bugs me though.
FFIII was my first SNES RPG, and I still love it, but I think I've overplayed it.

Breath of Fire was what got me started in the RPG genre and is probably my favorite of all the SNES RPGs. Close runner-ups are Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FF2, FF3, and Super Mario RPG.
Seriously, could people please use the proper original numbering for the Final Fantasy games? It's really confusing otherwise, and I can never remember which bastardized number corresponds to which original number.
(It's not like anybody would get confused if you use "FF4" or "FF6". Those are pretty unambiguous.)
