Hello !
World Of Goo is an inteligent game with some geeks references. It's a profond reflexion of the treatment of the goos in our modern society. You have the power of goos, and with power comes responsability, so you must take them to the house safely or you will not go home on the next level. You need to plan your strategy and choose your goo wisely. That pretty much describe this game !
The gameplay is simple, you can take balls of goo and link them so they can form complex structure, with the purpose to reach a pipe and collect the number of goo required to finish the level. They are many kinds of goo, which have all their specificity (some goos can't be taken, some act like balloon, some act like drool). The difficulty of this game is in the level design but also with the physics, which will be the main enemy of the game, as you have to overcome the gravity for example while constructing your structures.
This run only aims to beat the game as fast as possible.

Tricks

I will quote ridd3r on this one : "Throwing goos through walls - To do this you let go before the goo hits the wall and throw at a reasonable pace and it will go through and then you can grab it on the other side and build a structure through the wall (for example in upper shaft). Setting goos on fire without building a structure to it - If a flammable goo touches fire after it has touched the ground or another goo then it will set on fire. Example: Product Launcher, Burning Man. Boosting - By throwing a goo into another goo or object you can boost that object and keep it mid air or boost it horizontally. Examples: Volcanic Percolator Day Spa, Genetic sorting machine." Note that the Early Whistle Glitch, which allows to whistle early on whistler (and do super time), is NOT possible on the wii version.
About skipping cutscenes, if you finish the game and then create another profile without reseting the wii then the cutscenes can be skipped. So it would require starting by a savestate, but would save some minutes. But hey, I personally like those cutscenes and you can try to watch the story, even if I don't read any sign or anything... No seriously, if you want to understand the story (which is great) just go play this game :p
Cursor manipulation (if we can call that a trick) : At the end of a level, dependent of where you put the cursor EACH frame, the continue button will fall at a different frame. So you need to be able to manipulate it.

Improvement possible :

For the time, well, I don't know... I guess that the only ways to improve this are :
  • New strategies
  • New glitch
  • Luck manipulation (I only did luck manipulation in level 1).
  • Luck. Just pure luck.
Also, understanding how the whistle works precisely would help to improve the run by 4-5 seconds I guess. Of course, I tried to understand it, but I just failed and started to just try many random movements while holding the whistle...
For the entertainment improvement... Well, I tried, but it was way harder than I though, I didn't have tons of idea I have to admit. And for some levels such as Regurgitation Pumping Station (1-12), if you play for example with the last goo when you wait for the end of the level to come, you will actually lose some time for some reason (I guess there is a limit to the access of the RAM for the Wii).
I mainly use strategies which can be found on the youtube channel of Wogfan, but not only of course.
I would like to thank people who encouraged me, it's my first TAS so it's actually stressful :p Hope you enjoyed it !

i was just making a "world of puns" about the cutscenes complains >.>... ahem....let's get constructive again, i agree with the others, i personally don't mind the cutscenes as they are fun and i like them but 2 published encodes, one with the cutscenes, one with just the inputs would be the best option as it would satisfy the most everybody....

I don't think anyone has a problem with the gameplay being too fast, it's the fact that the gameplay is so fast that literally most the run is cutscene.
If the cutscenes could be skipped, I might have voted yes, just for the insanity that would have been the result. However, the endless cutscenes and level transitions are quite a downer.

saying that a run mitght be too fast made me think of all the already published dungeon crawlers run or kings bounty
The difference to king's bounty (at least) is that it doesn't have any cutscenes nor level transitions, and it's extremely short. You literally don't have time to get bored. Let me emphasize that it's not only about this TAS being so fast that you can't see what's happening. But as said, I voted "meh", not "no". I don't mind if this is published.

I full-heartedly vote yes. I personally think that you shouldn't vote on a game you haven't played, especially this one. And I know that there are a few people who voted no and who have played the game (on even the most well-liked videos there are a few no votes). I don't think this run was repetitive, most of the levels were uniquely solved. Also, can anybody tell me what the heck happened in "You Have to Explode the Head" and how he exactly turned the thing in "Burning Man"?

For a cutsceneless encode, where should we cut ? Only for the cutscene ? Or the "level selection" map too ? Also, there IS a way to skip the cutscenes. You need to "view all the cutscene in another profile then start your run in a new profile WITHOUT restarting the game then the cut scenes can be skipped." (quote from ridd3r), but this would require to start the run from SRAM. A cutsceneless run may be better :p @sudgy : In the "Burning Man", I send a Balloon Goo extremely fast on the "head", then this balloon goo bounces really fast everywhere, crosses the walls, goes at the bottom of the stage, bounces 2/3 times again and then hit the head from the bottom. The head is propulse by the impact, freeing the pipe. For the "You have to explode the Head", here is the normal strategy , but it is possible to just throw a "match" goo into the fire to make it burn, then make it bounce the wall and reach the bomb, as you can see here (that's what he does at the beginning). In my TAS, I use this strategy, but instead of making the goo bouncing on the wall, I push it with another goo while it's in mid-air, because it's faster. Sorry if it's hard to understand, I will do a guide of each level with a friend who masters English more that me.

Cool run and abuse of the physics engine. A shame that temp encode had such a bad sound desync.

But also, isn't this an OCD run, if I'm not mistaken?
Nope; OCD criteria is different for each level. Whereas this run naturally earns the OCDs that require a fast time, there are two other possible requirements: 1) A fewer number of "moves", or goo ball placements (many of which I'm sure the run also gets naturally) or 2) Higher number of extra goo balls saved. So really, to do an OCD run wouldn't change much other than the approximate third of the levels that require a higher number of saved goo balls. IMHO, if another category would be made, it would be to maximize the extra number of goo balls saved throughout the entirety of the game. Just sayin'. :) On another note, I do have to say that the run did become monotonous after a while. Not any fault of the runner (I think the run is spectacularly well-done); but just not what I realized or thought was possible within the game. It just became a build-a-structure-fragment-and-fling-it-to-the-pipe run. Again - not STBM's fault - it just could have been more entertaining if the game's physics didn't allow the method used so more it would force the run to include many more structures being built.

This is a technically well done and thought out TAS, but I simply do not see this as a good game for TAS. The contrast between minimal gameplay time and extensive non-play time from the end of level score recap to the cutscenes takes away from the technical display.
STBM wrote:
Do any of you feel that a cutsceneless encode would be better ? As a player who really enjoys this game, I feel that doing this would make those of you who are a little bit lost completely lost, because you would not only miss out on the technics but also on the story and this would ultimately be boring (and too quick :p)
I'd be more interested in seeing how this flows without cutscenes, yes. However, if the technical display is not worth showing off and the entertainment value without cutscenes is minimal, then what can this run do that a well planned manual speed run wouldn't do better? This is a great game that might benefit from a slower "glitchfest" or "playaround" style TAS, but raw speed just doesn't do it even with clever solutions to puzzles. Voting no.

I haven't played this game, but I voted Yes. In fact, I vote Yes to many submissions of games I haven't played. Why shouldn't members like me be able to vote Yes and share a positive comment on a run of a game we haven't played before?

Voting yes because it's a Wii game looooool. Nah, it was entertaining and well made. I've played Goo quite a few times and it was impressive to see it get blown away with the TAS treatment.

The main thing is that when you know a game, you view the TAS completely differently. I hadn't played Super Metroid when I first watched its TAS, and I still liked it, but after beating that game I enjoyed the run a lot more. I can't control what others do and they can do whatever they want, it's just my personal opinion that people who haven't played shouldn't vote.

Most definitely not true. As of writing this, there are currently 999 published TASes (wow!) It's completely unrealistic to expect that every single person who has voted for them to have played the games. The target audience of TASes are not only people who have played the game. You don't need to have played the game in order to appreciate the TAS (even though in many cases having done so helps). Thus it only makes sense that a significant portion of votes are from people who have not played the game. It gives a perspective of what the TAS looks like from that point of view. It's very valuable information.

Abstaining from voting. I haven't played the game so I don't consider myself capable of judging it properly, the run looked pretty well optimised... but it was 70% cutscenes/goo tally screens, and the gameplay went by too fast for me to really get a good idea of what was going on.

A max goo collection run would be INCREDIBLY long. Check some of the videos on wogfan's channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/wogfan), some levels take hours to complete under non-tas conditions. In other news, I vote yes. Brilliantly done in my opinion. The cutscenes don't really bother me.

In my opinion, a max goo collection would be a long video with many repetitions (dragging 93 goos at a pipe on a level, and then 23, and then... repeat for all the levels :p). As Truncated said, you should check wogfan's channel, watch the videos who gots the number of goo collected at the end of their title. But at the same time, I really like this idea :p

Voting meh. Unfortunately, I found the RTS far more entertaining, which is a bad thing. Not voting no though, because even though I agree with most of what nitrogenesis said for why it should be rejected, I also agree that it is probably far more entertaining for people who know the game. Plus, I've personally submitted Top Gun NES in the past (under a different gamertag), so I can't talk about boring runs :)

If you wanted to (or someone else wants to) you could just make it and post it in the forums. I feel a max goo collection shouldn't be published, but it would still be interesting (even though it probably wouldn't be that entertaining).

A TAS could probably throw them, which would be faster than dragging, but I fear it'd still be repetitive.

  • The game is played blisteringly fast
  • The puzzles are solved in surprising ways totally different from those intended
  • Many of the solutions are possible only due to the high speed used here
  • The author spends downtime well, providing entertainment with the cursor
  • The game is fun to play, and this TAS is fun to watch
Isn't this exactly what we look for in a TAS? I am a bit dismayed at all the no votes here. Most are from people who have not played the game, and I understand if the action here is too quick for them to see all the glitching, breakage and smart solutions going on here. But the primary audience of a TAS is people who have played the game, and not publishing this TAS will be a disservice to them, as they will be stuck wondering what an optimized completion of this game looks like. And remember, the question is "Should this movie be published?", not "Should this movie be starred?". Ps. A better encode would be nice, though: By the end of the current one, the A/V desync was 7.5 seconds or so, which is very irritating. Perhaps a simple timecode rescaling using mkvmerge will work?
What he said.
So do I.
