I hope it is good etiquette for me to put a topic in the Off Topic forum about my favorite thing to do, which is sit around and look at maps, globes, and atlases. It's so addicting. I love learning about other places, because I have dreams about going to other places besides the U.S. and Denmark. The country that fascinates me the most is Canada. I know all the capitals of their provinces and territories as well as all the U.S. (states), North America, South America, United Kingdom, and Australia/Oceania (continent). So I know that most people in Canada (85% Canadians) live within 200 miles of the U.S./Canada border. Toronto is the biggest city, and Montreal is the second biggest city. Ottawa is the national capital, and here are all the rest: Alberta: Edmonton British Columbia: Victoria Ontario: Toronto Quebec: Quebec City Manitoba: Winnipeg Saskatchewan: Regina Nova Scotia: Halifax Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown New Brunswick: Fredericton Yukon Territory: Whitehorse Northwest Territories: Yellowknife Nunavut: Iqaluit And I see a lot of people here are from Canada, and I didn't really expect that. That's actually really cool that there are canadians on this site. If you are Canadian and reading this message, I must tell you, that's really cool! The thing I find interesting about Canada is that it is so large, but so much of it is unpopulated. It is very interesting to me that that is the case. That is only one of the things that fascinates me about Canada though. Canada is such a beautiful country. If you look in a travel book, you'd think that Yukon is always covered with snow, but it shows a picture of such beautiful mountains and beautiful forests with barely any snow. Although obviously you can probably guess that it snows most of the year there. So anyway, I am planning to memorize all the country capitals in the world just like I did for those areas I just talked about, plus Mexican states and Australian provinces. I really made this topic because I really want to see if people want to discuss geography with me, since there are people from all over the world here. I'd be glad to have someone talk with me about this stuff.

I've been to huge cities, so I highly doubt what you're saying. I don't really want to share too much information about me, but I was born a big city in Europe (and I go there every once a few months to see family), and a lot of my family lives there as well, so I know that the world is a huge place.

When one is small, the world is huge. Over time you realize how small and connected the world actually is.

How can it all be connected in some way as you say? I was born in Denmark. I have been there a lot of times. I didn't see many similarities of the U.S. and D.K. at all as far as human nature goes. So please explain your point so I can understand it.

They take 3 kids, call 'em gumshoes for the rest of the episode, then they quiz em. After that, they take the 2 best and pretend to send them to some city in the U.S. Then they do a matchin-like game. The winner goes to this map and has to identify countries in continents (Like Egypt is in Africa, Columbia in South Amrica, etc.). If they get 8 in 90 or 60 seconds then they capture Carmen Sandiego. It aired on PBS from '92-'95.

The Earth is physically large, but the world of people is small. We are all connected through the internet and through other people. Just on this site, there are many people from around the world. We can travel across the world in milliseconds via the internet. Not only that, but with airplanes and cars, we can traverse huge distances in such little time. Because of this, I call the world small.

As a side-project of my mnemotechnic (?) classes, I learned 150 capitals along with their countries in about 2 hours using simple memory techniques, the most reliable being the loci system. Although, I've forgot most of it since I had no interest in these countries and couldn't even pinpoint their location on a globe. XD Try to read about mnemotechnics and see if it works for you. :)

The one thing that struck me about Winnipeg and Toronto (and I assume this probably applies to other places in Canada as well) is how much of a ghost town they feel. They're large places, but not a lot of people in them relative to their size.

The earth is small yes, But with the internet, and the world at your fingertips, with the push of a button it is quite small.

I think that the world is enormous practically beyond comprehension. Even with the internet.

Compared to the entire universe, the earth is infinitesimally small.

The Earth is getting smaller and smaller with relation to the universe. At an accelerating rate.

It depends on which angle you look at the universe. In some ways, the universe is comparatively small, and in others it is comparatively large. Same for every other existing object in my opinion.

I don't think you can exactly argue like that when one of your earlier post was this:

Despite Guga's comment wasn't supposed to be taken literally nor as an absolute.

This ought to be fun when people begin arguing which countries are even recognized or not. Kosovo? What is this madness? For the record, I got about 140 countries or so right. Woulda been more if I knew how to spell certain ones. At least I now learned you spell it Tajikistan and not Tadjikistan >_>.
