The purpose of this run is to beat the game as fast as possible w/o using any power-ups.
  • Emulator used: <DeSmuMe v0.9.7>
  • Goal: Completion w/o use of power-ups
  • Uses death as shortcut
Be sure Advanced bus-level timing is off Comments: Corner boosts were used to save frames(For some particular reason, ducking to corner boost works well in some levels and just jumping directly to corner boost can be the same or be better in some levels. Ducking works better in majority of levels.
Death was used to save time in 8-T2
In 8-6, 1 frame was lost to manipulate luck, for the red block could've taken the longer route to lose frames. The route in 8-6 saved 1 frame and could've gotten a 373, but the lost frames wouldn't back it up. In 8-6, I decided to sync with the music a little. Dosen't do much. In many levels like 8-T2, Super seizures were performed, it looks like Mario's freaking out about death, so he looks scared.
  • Glitches/Tricks -On spring boards, you can keep your speed if you don't hold and direction buttons -The cliffs on 8-7... you can keep jumping w/o losing speed by not pressing any direction buttons and jump w/o landing for more than 1 frame. -By alternating left and right, you can freeze your animation or face the front which looks very silly when you freeze Mario's head in the ground after doing a triple jump. When progressing on a hill, try running down to the last point where you can slide, and do so. Running down a hill is faster than sliding down, but when you're at the bottom of the hill, try sliding, gives a boost to the speeding. When you slide off of a hill, hold on the down button longer to speed a little. In 8-5, the chain platforms will help you gain speed for a little when running up.
-The unstable rocks act to your running, try landing in the middle in favor of your running.
In 8-3, there are water currents, you can keep your speed for many frames w/o holding any direction buttons. This was a nice discovery by not me. Note: When you try entering pipes, you may be stalled to enter the pipe. In 8-T2, I performed a glitch where Mario entered a spot of the moving platform, which is done when you ground pound at the last second.

Noxxa: Claiming for judgment.
Noxxa: Hello LFNMai, and welcome to TASVideos. Unfortunately, your category choice is largely disliked by the site community. This run does not seem to add anything meaningful that isn't already covered by the current publications of this game. Therefore, I'll have to reject this TAS.
Better luck next time!

Another lame arbitrary TAS category to a Mario franchise that has too many arbitrary categories as it is. This is just one stop short of "no facing left" and "no breaking blocks" runs. Voting no.

Hey, small only runs have been accepted in the past, especially when they require creative solutions to accomplish. Without having watched the run, I know that "small only" makes the secret exit in 1-F impossible to get (unless I missed some amazing glitch).

I agree Mario should just have: -100% -any% -small only (and -1 world for SMB) This "no power-ups" stuff shouldn't exist. Also since you did no power up 1-1 can be improved, not stating how because I repeat, this branch doesn't deserve to exist. EDIT: Working up an encode right now (and a storm) (DS takes a bit so find some Jeopardy music). I keep crashing at 8-2 someone else encode. EDIT 2: it says "DS DS New Super Mario Bros" can someone (Judge or Editor) change it to one DS as it should be titled please. EDIT 3: Your X speed is much slower in-comparison to the other two runs every time you start a level you need to do the jumps to ramp your speed up.

Seconded. Although... You got to admit, the crazy capless/cannonless/etc stuff in Sm64 is kinda the exception. Not for publication, just for entertainment wise. Although, I'll refrain from voting until encode is up... You never know if you'll see some crazy kind of stuff that isn't shown off in other runs of the same game.

Care to elaborate what the difference is between "small only" and "no power ups"? I'd think they mean the same thing.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Example: In world 1-1 you can grab a star to finish the level much quicker, compared to bypassing it and finishing in a later time. Small only is allowed to get stars, where as no power-ups well is no power-ups.

Even a "small only" run is debatable. I'm a bit more lenient towards SMB because it has tenure as the first game in the series, but I wouldn't accept a "small only" run for SMB3 or SMW. The rule of thumb should consist of two categories: Any% and 100%, or minimalist and completist. Even those "glitched" categories for games like Kirby's Adventure and Yoshi's Island obsolete the current Any% runs IMO.

I actually somewhat disagree with that point. In any% you can show off many things that can be done and show the final boss (SMW & Kirby Adventure "glitched" does not). They both show a certain skill, one shows how a game can be completely destroyed in a short amount of time and the other can show the game be destroyed in a longer amount of time. Also think of Crash 2 the any% which goes through every level (slower than PeteThePlayer, so we need an update on that) and the "glitched" which shows off one simple glitch and make it look extremely complicated (moving and still managing to hold the glitch), get all the crystals in one level and beat all the bosses in a beautiful fashion.

How is that any%? Wouldn't that make it more of a "glitchless" run? It would be like having a starfy run that goes through all levels without the demo glitch, but instead uses the save glitch to blaze through the levels fast and call it an any% run. :P

You can still do glitches in an any% Jump on ceiling in Ripper Roo fight, get yourself stuck and unstuck in Komodo Bros (painful glitch), No floor glitch (Tiny) list goes on.... (There is a list I have it on my computer to lazy to copy all of them). Mukki just didn't show off glitches... watch pirohiko's 100% WIP (which died) and you'll see some glitches that could've been done in any% even though it's the first warp room and it has the least glitches :/

Isn't that what a 100% TAS does and more? Those runs exist if you want to see more of the game and potentially show off more glitches, while a 'glitched' run completes the game as quick as possible. Ultimately that's what speedruns are all about. Say you have three categories: Glitched, Any% and 100%. The Glitched run finishes the game the fastest while the 100% run covers all levels, items and bosses the fastest. The Any% run is the middle ground that completes neither goal as quickly and is therefore irrelevant.

Any% should ALWAYS refer to beating the game as fast as possible without any restrictions. This is the only clear category we have for every existing game in this universe. For other categories you can add extra restrictions (like banning glitches etc.) depending on the game you play. Not even 100% is a clear category in every game (just look at the mess with OoT 100%).

Your movie is very good! Thank you for your submission! ^_^ I can see that you tried your best to do it. And it's entertaining enough. So I like it. Although there is some improvable places. But this can't be accepted in this site at all. Because this movie's aim. For this game, warpless(any%)+warpless+100%. These can be accepted. So you can try to do a 100% run or improve warpless record which made by WinEpic and me. To be honest, warpless record can be improved a lot of time. I'm looking forward to these record by you. ^_^ Also, if you like "no power-up" record very much, I advice you to submit this movie in other tas sites.

Hey, I've complained about Super Metroid before! Though I wouldn't go as far as to quit TASing just because a decision that I don't agree on was made, or else I would've quit real life already. :P

The movie of an odd goal is acceptable as long as people like it. That doesn't look like the case here though (so far).
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

In Super Mario World's case, the category "small only" was accepted because it allowed for many new interesting strategies, because in that game the cape could be used to fly over most stages. Not being allowed to use the cape meant many stages had to be traversed with different tactics in mind. However, in this game, "small only"/"no powerups" does not seem to add much (if at all) to the run. Here, the category just becomes useless and redundant and hence, not worth publishing.

Isn't a "no powerups" movie similar to a "low%" run?

I would say no. Low% would attempt to get none of the star coins in any level. Another variant of Low% could be "Do the least amount of work to win" The Warpless run does this (I think).

Already attempted but as I wrote "I keep crashing at 8-2 someone else encode."

Umm... I'm encoding now and will upload it if no one else encode. And I found a improvable place for any% run from this movie~ And it remind me of 2 improvable places for any% run when I do our warpless movie. So maybe I will do an any% run.
