I had to go back to the beginning of Chapter 1 and redo some segments that could've been faster. After saving some frames, I got to an area that I had spent a lot of time optimizing, only to find that it desynced because of different enemy positions and I would have to do it over. At the time, I had to worry on college work anyway, so I just took a break. I've been starting to manage my time better, and I'll resume working on this run tomorrow. I'm redoing the part with the Spiked Goomba guarding the POW block and I found a much faster route, which is encouraging.

I conversed with Coolkirby some, but I feel discussion should go on here. Here is a jumping trick I found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQV_52RWwxc The first time you ever go to this place there is an invisible wall preventing you from doing this. And I don't know if it can work without a groundpound, I have to test it yet. I suggest maybe someone can try this trick on the Japanese version; the invisible wall might not be there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m82YmTYFzLw Bowser world 1-1 in 161.15 (Perfect time was believed to be 160 I think) Bowser can slow down if his jumps are "bad", i.e. if he falls too fast or lands too early or something. If anyone can give me savefiles for the other two Bowser levels, I would really appreciate it!

Heyy how is this run going? Somewhere in Hooktail's Castle? Some months ago Almolicious found a timesaver in X-Naut Fortress, I already told CoolKirby about it but some of you might have not seen it. According to Rainbowism it saves 39 seconds in RTA, definitely more in TAS. That's not very topical considering how far in the game it is. I remember watching Almo do it live, here is a video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNuFWcvt5RI

Actually, I'm about to hit the blue switches to enter Hooktail Castle. Now that I'm finally on winter break, I can continue this run.

I found this trick: Link to video It saves about 2 minutes by skipping a cutscene and a miniboss.

How does it skip it? You seem to be stuck during the dialogue before disappearing.

The trick is everything before 9 seconds in the video. Rather than going back out the door, you'd continue down the stairs toward the final boss. I just go back out to show that the trigger zone is still there.

0_o Now I wonder what happens if you try to trigger the miniboss after you beat the shadow queen. :P

You should add an annotation to the video to make it clear. (I figured it out on the second watch through lol)

Ok, I added that to the description. Btw, here's some smaller stuff I've found so far: Link to video Link to video Link to video
  • from first plane pad before bridge outside hooktail castle you can guide your way down to an HP plus badge, jump in the water, and then fly across the bridge as normal (might be faster than getting other badges for selling or whatever - I don't know the route at all)

Thanks for finding and posting all these glitches, Cronikeys. Hopefully that last one can be used somewhere on the route as well to save time. I look forward to your trick compilation, though if you find anything in Chapter 1, I would appreciate it if you would make one of these small videos for it instead so I don't miss the opportunity to perform it in the run. Here is the route. Unfortunately, it looks like the HP Plus trick is just slow enough that it doesn't save time.

I found another skip that saves about a minute: Link to video It skips having to get a key, unlock a door, put in a light code, and then return back to this wheel. Edit: I also found this minor trick: Link to video

What would be considered a 100% TAS of this game? Obtaining all badges, beating all bosses (such as Bonetail) and getting all partners?
Previous TASes: Frogger's Adventures: The Rescue Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door any% x 8 Paper Mario 64 Luigi's Mansion Sonic Heroes - Team Sonic Mario Kart Wii ILs

Definitely required: -all partners fully upgraded -all 100 star pieces Probably required: -all crystal stars (can see arguments either way on this one) Not sure about: -all sidequests/bosses (they don't technically make you stronger to do unless they give you a unique item or ability) -all badges (unlike in paper mario, many badges can be accumulated multiple times. so when do you have to stop? 1 or more of every unique badge? enough of each badge type to fill 99 bp?)

They are collectibles, and they are all unique, so if you are going to collect all star pieces and upgrades, I can see this making sense...
-all sidequests/bosses (they don't technically make you stronger to do unless they give you a unique item or ability)
In a typical RPG, I could see it making a lot of sense. In this type of game, I don't really know. Still, it's fun, so I'd argue yes.
-all badges (unlike in paper mario, many badges can be accumulated multiple times. so when do you have to stop? 1 or more of every unique badge? enough of each badge type to fill 99 bp?)
Usually you only require at least one of each unique item, so one of each badge should be sufficient.

There's a menu where you can view the badges you've collected, the recipes found, etc. It is like the enemy tattle log except with badges. So, I guess fill that up? Edit: You can sell the badges and the log will still be there. You just need to at least have the badge once.

In oot 100% you can lose the shield to like-likes but you need to have it at the end for it to count. Should similar logic apply here?

Things tracked on status screens:
  • Superstar Status
  • Max Hammer/Boots
  • All Curses (4/4)
  • All Partners (with upgrades - meaning 14/14 Shine Sprites)
Items tracked in journal:
  • All Crystal Stars (7/7)
  • All Badges (85/85)
  • All Tattles (124/124)
  • All Recipes (57/57)
Things tracked on Pit of 100 trials sign:
  • All Star Pieces (100/100)
  • Pit of 100 Trials Completed
If the 100% definition included all of these, the run would be about 10 hours (4.5 hours longer than Any%). Speaking of 100%, this saves like 50+ seconds getting the Double Dip badge: Link to video

10 hours of Paper Mario? Sounds pretty awesome :D And I feel so sorry for this game, who knows how long we will still see it in this relatively unbroken state, now that Cronikeys is playing it..
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

Idk, I never played OoT. Why not just collect everything tracked as mentioned by Cronikeys?

I'd be willing to spend a LONG time on a 100% run. I would just need some help with route planning as I haven't played Paper Mario TTYD in a very long time. If anyone is highly experienced with this game, please add me on Skype: Malleoz Thanks guys :)

Skip a Fish Glitch Link to video This saves time by skipping a fish glitch (~10 seconds maybe?). Basically, if you fall into the water you spawn back up top - meaning you only have to fish glitch by the warp pipes once. Chapter 1 Staircase Flip Skip Link to video This saves about 12 seconds by skipping the two cutscenes of the staircase flipping around. Early Boat Pad Outside Riddle Tower Link to video This saves about 30 seconds by skipping half of the background in this area. It requires a precise fish glitch to clip inside of this statue to reach the boat pad earlier. Pirate's Grotto Timesavers Compilation Link to video These tricks save about 48 seconds for TAS (31-36 realtime). They involve fish glitching to reach the Grotto key and skip two boat platforms as well as skipping two cannon fights which greatly affects inventory management. Additionally, there are two things I found which I didn't make a video of:
  • You can skip a key in Hooktail Castle by riding the purple block up, going into the next area, Goombella buffering past the loading zone of the doorway, and then jumping out of bounds (off screen) into the area below. It's extremely difficult. Since you have to use the door you're skipping twice normally, it is probably slower to do it this way. It might be possible to use the skipped key later in the dungeon in place of the key that you normally have to backtrack for after getting paper mode.
  • You can fish glitch out of bounds in the first area of Chapter 5 (the pirate chapter) and then walk out of bounds for a while and jump into the shortcut hole to the end of the chapter. It's extremely difficult and the game seems to be softlocked once you get there since the boss isn't there. You can backtrack a little once you're in that final area by falling into the water. This should be investigated more (there might be a way to get the toads to appear here).

Sorry for double post, but I made a video of that key skip in Chapter 1: Link to video I'm not sure how much time it saves since this video I made is not optimized. It requires pixel perfect navigation while out of bounds. The door opens automatically after the curse chest so you don't have to worry about repeating this the second time you pass this area. Also, keys are door specific so you can't use the key you skip with this somewhere else.

Letting everyone know, CoolKirby and I have started on an any% TAS. We've started over even though Kirby has made some progress, mostly to optimize further.
