Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is a submission for Super Mario Advance using only Princess Peach with warps.

Game Information

The Super Mario Advance version of Super Mario Bros. 2 includes several new features such as the addition of the enemy Robirdo (a robotic Birdo acting as the boss of World 3, replacing Mouser), the addition of the Yoshi Challenge (in which players may revisit stages to search for Yoshi Eggs), and an all-new point-scoring system (a first for the game). Graphical and audio enhancements were also added in the form of enlarged sprites, multiple hit combos, digital voice acting, and such minor stylistic and aesthetic changes as an altered default health-meter level, boss-order, backgrounds, the size of hearts, Princess Toadstool being renamed to the now-standard "Princess Peach," and the inclusion of a chime to announce Stars.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: VBA RR v23.6 svn461
  • Uses a Suboptimal character
  • Uses Warps
  • Aims for fastest time
After seeing this submission, #4055: turgish's GBA Super Mario Advance "princess only" in 11:37.87 I decided to take this into my own hands. Despite having spend about less than 24 hours on this, it's pretty solid. I saved 03:16.46 over that submission and also beats adelikat's NES version TAS by about 8 seconds.
More to add later.

feos: Judging!

Nach: Updated submission with new one from author(s).

Instead of snipping GoddessMaria, why don't you put effort and help add-on to the run by saving more time just like the Kirby Team. I mean she has shaved a-lot of time off from the 11:37.87! And if you think it's rubbish what she has done, well your a total muffin (word not allowed to be said but it starts with a p). Check out the things you are questioning and do it yourself.
I don't know what an unrelated game I have no interest in has to do with this topic. The other submission in terms of execution was not in any way good, and neither is this. This isn't some movie that only someone with a sharp eye could spot improvements to, but something even casual viewers could notice.

I vote yes. Though this run could not be accepted for Vault, I hope you and Masterjun can improve it. Delete "Peach only" and use the best characters, becaue Vault doesn't allow suboptimal characters. #3853: Marx's NES Mighty Final Fight "Guy" in 11:41.34 [2229] GBA Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World "warps" by Masterjun in 10:07.98 has been accepted for Vault. I worried this submission would be rejected, too, if there is no change.

I think this should be published to the Moon tier. It's not vastly different from the NES and SNES versions, but it's different enough. I was entertained.

Yes, I try to make the titles easy to understand. It is difficult to know what an acronym means without prior knowledge. The term "tool-assisted speed run" is ugly, and sounds like Japanese-English. ;-) Anybody can intuitively guess what a "speed run" is. This is why I include it in the title. The description, channel name, and thumbnail all contain "TAS"; for the 1% that know what it means.

Is that really so? Because if it is, I would have to raise an objection. It would be like saying that Vault doesn't allow 100% completions (if any% is faster.) Just because Vault is a collection of speed records doesn't mean that there can't be alternative goals or limitations imposed in the run (within rational limits, of course) IMO.

You made the Vault sound more like a dumping ground for runs in general than an archive of records. >.>

But this is not 100%, it's "uses suboptimal character" category.

What would be the reason to impose those limitations, if the result is not entertaining?

Are you always nice like that? ^^ As a casual viewer, you said improvements can be done, but didn't give any example. I ask you, do you think 1-1 is improvable, for example? And where?

On the first screen its clearly faster to wrap left on the screen where the door is. Instead of falling all the way down to the rising platform.

Yes, and? What's the rationale in accepting one goal but not the other?

The vine glitch using an enemy is possible in 1-1, and you don't have to take the long route in 7-2 to get the key. Easy improvements.

But it can't save enough time to count, there is a frame rule with bosses in that game... A huge one in fact: 256 frames ^^' Just watching the encode, I'd say that you have to gain maybe 4 seconds on the level itself to make it count.

Yes, and? What's the rationale in accepting one goal but not the other?
As you know, there are two main goals of TASing: to find the theoretical limit of the game and to provide entertainment. If a movie doesn't provide entertainment, it should at least show the limit. When we're imposing additional constraints, it becomes possible that we will find a limit of a different game (rules of the original game + additional rules). Personally, I would only accept "any%" runs to the Vault. But at least with the "100%" category the imposed constraints (and thus the additional rules) are suggested by the game developer, while e.g. "Pacifist" category is completely made-up (in order to add entertainment). "Suboptimal character" is something in between.

That would be why I asked instead of told. I don't care enough to try, but that doesn't mean it wasn't worth mentioning. (Don't worry, I promise not to pull a Spider-Waffle and ask for credz.) Also, the fact that this run is an improvement to another submission does not somehow make my question inappropriate. Also, had I (or you) looked at the gif in MasterJun's post, I (or you) would have seen that yes, this section can be improved.

I voted yes cause I came into this with a open opinion true its a bad (ok really bad) port of the NES with voiceovers it was different seeing it sped through as it was true, it could use some improvements here and there but so much better then the other runs that were out there of it. altho im not sure using Peach as a handicap is as usefull anymore, wouldn't mind seeing someone try to get all 40 eggs in a tas fashion since you would need to plan your route through the level more. I would love to see this get to the vault and see how it could be improved from there.

BTW, I don't think 64% of votes being Yes is enough for Moons.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

It is if people want to change their vote now and thus it's significantly higher.

With non-genuine apologies to SpikeStuff for "snipping", this p-muffin would like to offer a couple potential ideas for improvements: - The amount of jump height used to quickly climb things doesn't seem consistent throughout the run, and even in some of the individual climbs of 7-1. Typically (though not always), there is a general technique that yields the best results for these kind of situations. - In 4-1, it seems like if you jumped and fell to the rocket rather than running of the ledge to fall to the rocket, your downward momentum would be faster. I am now second-guessing whether that would get you to the rocket patch any quicker, though.
