I'm wondering how far in the future we're expecting this to be. What's the latest? Is anyone working on it? What kind of technical difficulties would be involved in creating an N64 re-recording emulator that were not faced with, for example, the SNES.

First of all N64 emulation must be majorly improved on both quality and speed. (Speed will be improved with better computers of course) Another issue is that most N64 emulators use plugins, and these plugins may not be interchangeable/compatible when it comes to playing back a movie. (So all movies must be played back with the exact same plugins to avoid desync) N64 Rerecording is being looked at but it is not yet worth the effort, atleast thats the general census.

I think I've already mentioned this in another topic, but if frame advance is added to an N64 emulator, you'd be able to make TASs for Mario Kart 64 since you can just do a replay when you finish a race in time trials, so re-recording isn't needed. Would someone be willing to add frame advance to one of the N64 emulators? I don't know too much about adding features to emulators, but it doesn't seem like it would be too much trouble.
