Post subject: Problems with recent AVI's

I've downloaded each of the AVI files via bittorrent for the publications released on the 1st and the 4th and none of them will play for me. I haven't modified them and have tried playing them on both the mplayer and the Media Player linked in the FAQ. Is there a codec I'm missing or something? One error that occurs reads as follows in the mplayer log: 
[h264 @ 009E3CB8]picture size invalid 4294966864x2048)
Error while decoding frame!
This error occurs while trying to play the Out to Lunch, Street Fighter 2010, and Gauntlet videos. Another reads: 
[h264 @ 009E3CB8]illegal short term buffer state detected
This error occurs when trying to play the Mystic Defender video. The error that occurs while trying to play the Dragon Ball video reads: 
[h264 @ 009E3CB8]illegal short term buffer state detected
[h264 @ 009E3CB8]concealing 252 DC, 252 AC, 252 MV errors


MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: decode_video
The first two errors repeat frequently (many times every second) while the third error occurs once and then MPlayer shuts off. I've played every other AVI file I downloaded off of this site with no problem and I'm just wondering is there was some new codec used or something similar that I'm missing?

I've tried that, and ffdshow.ax refuses to install. Now all but VLC will crash, and the videos don't play back as well there. Bisqwit, please, stability. Edit: Okay, the downloads and intsallations went through. Now, however, some AVIs have no sound, and others no video. Thanks. <¬_¬>

This is a question of a specific codec. It basically has nothing to do with the video file itself. That is, it's not the video format which is causing the problems, but one codec. If ffdshow is a crappy codec, then use some other codec. (Ok, supposing there were other codecs supporting the H2whatever format... well, surely in the near future other codecs will pop up.) But yes, perhaps it might be a good idea to use older, more established formats until H2whatever codecs get more popular and stable.

When you install the fddshow codec, uncheck all the other formats besides the H2whatever. You don't want to use it for anything else.

My stability comment was more in reference to sticking with a common, well used codec instead of "trying to keep up for the best results". Bisqwit keeps talking about trying to keep a good quality/size ratio. However, if people wanted high quality, couldn't they just download ROMs? And you're little suggestion didn't do much for me. Oh sure, things will work properly (in VLC; that's another issue), but the sound for videos taken from my camera still aren't working, and haven't since I've downloaded the new codec. I'm just getting sick and tired of having to download new, updated codecs and playing the videos in separate players I don't even like when before I was perfectly happy with the results. Can't we please keep the accessibilty of this site high? Demand too much out of your customers and you lose them.

If the codec is not even loaded when playing such video (assuming you really followed my advise) I have hard time imagining how it could be its fault. I don't think fddshow somehow magically stops sounds from being played just by sitting on your hard disk.

I am also having problems with the newer movies (OutToLunch). I am using: media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7 media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20050226-r5 I just upgraded both of them, but I am still having the same problem. Which versions specifically am I supposed to use?

i couldnt agree more, in fact i think the video quality is a little higher than it could be (so we could have smaller avis). want full quality? download the emulator file want easy watching? download the lossy avi

Yes, I also think I have used little too high bitrate settings. Regarding the upgrades... well, I have used the CVS versions in hope it gives better compression and more cool features, but I hadn't realized that it breaks compatibility with older codec versions. Too bad it's not possible to do cvs-downgrade. I'll try to avoid the settings that caused problems for many. (But I won't re-encode the existing videos, because they _will_ work eventually given that people upgrade their codecs.)

I put the CVS version from today and it worked. (Using ffplay, I'm not sure about how to get mplayer to use the newer codec. I tried recompiling it, but that didn't have any effect. I think that there might be a problem with which directory the files went into.) I think that it would be better if you used a codec from an actual release instead of just from CVS.

It looks like CCCP is Windows only. On top of that, it looks like it only works on a few versions of windows at that. ffmpeg is included in that pack, and is what is being used to create these files, so for specifically watching these files, regardless of which OS you are using, getting ffmpeg would help, whereas CCCP is not as likely to be compatible. It makes more sense to say get ffmpeg than it does to say get CCCP.

can anyone play walkerboh's tmnt 1 run in wmp? it always says "error contacting codec server", then plays it as if it were an audio file. i have divx and the most recent ffdshow and everything. what could i possibly be missing? why is this one movie special? edit: im retarded. the faq = god.
