Post subject: For a beginning runner, what system/games should I focus on?

I think I've done enough watching of tool-assisted speedruns, and I feel that I am ready to try my hand at speedrunning a game. Just a few questions: -What system should a beginning runner focus on? -What GAMES for said system should a beginning runner focus on? I'm looking for something that will look amazing when ran through, but doesn't have much competition so I can have a lot of time to perfect my run before a run of said game is released by another, more professional runner. So yes, I'm taking requests for speedruns. Thanks in advance guys.

You should start with Nintendo 64 runs, but that requires coding a compatible emulator, so you should do that first instead. Then do Mario Kart or something...

So you're looking for an easy way to fame. :) I don't know. It's up to you to find the game you want to play. If you want ideas, here's one: A full completion of Super Mario Bros 2. Naturally, it mustn't lose to the current warp-using SMB2 movie in the levels that are equivalent. You shouldn't find it great difficulty to duplicate Sleepz's actions, given that use you tools (frame advance, frame counter etc) to your advantage. More work is involved in devising effecient strategies for the levels that are yet not played.

And now for a reply a bit more serious: The systems I would suggest are NES or Gameboy (not GBA) since they have less buttons and therefore fewer actions to worry about. I'd suggest Genesis too, but people seem to have more desync issues with it. A game that I suggest is Shantae for the GBC. It's a great platformer with enough variety in it and nobody seems to have vested any interest in it yet.

NES and Paperboy 1. Very simple ways of getting settled, and the game isn't so difficult. That, and I really want to see a Paperboy movie...

Do what I did runs of: semi-obscure games from your childhood. In general, though, I find the simpler movement is (and to a lesser extent attacking), the easier it will be to run. Just don't make the same mistake I did and do incredibly simple games like World of Illusion. :P

- NES / GB games - straightforward (no complex routes to plan) - games that are better played at 1P mode - and nothing with too much competition like smb2! that has an incredible demand for quality and people are pickier (not that you can be lazy with other games).

Actually, Mega Man 2 for Game Boy might be pretty easy. The only annoying part is that you can't stop a slide.

System and Game: any system and game that you are familiar enough with to make a good run. Which games did you play a lot and know by heart? Don't pick a game that requires heavy planning and luck manipulation for your first project. I.e an RPG or another non-linear game with lots of possible paths. Platformers/shooters are probably good for a first attempt. You can complete them one level at a time and have easy comparison points. If you didn't want competition, you've come to the wrong place. All mistakes that anyone can find will be pointed out, you will be expected to fix them all, and if you don't someone else is likely to come along and do it. ;) Don't be discouraged, though. People are generally very helpful.
