After doing a tool-assisted run, do you ever find yourself doing really stupid things while playing the game normally, such as forgetting you're not using slow motion and attempting stunts that aren't possible without it? Worse, do you ever find yourself under some sort of pressure to play as if you were performing a tool-assisted run, even when you're just playing for fun? This used to happen to me a long time ago when I was trying to speed run Metroid Prime. I remember how it went- I would just keep re-loading the game over and over every time I made the slightest step in the wrong direction. The best time I got was 1:31, and it could have been better if I could have ever figured out the stupid dash through Thardus' room. Sometimes I would just want to play the game casually for enjoyment, but I found I could not. I had forgotten the normal route of the game and found myself having to resort to sequence breaking. I found myself trying to take shortcuts through rooms for no reason. I also found myself getting angry whenever I would screw up a jump or something, even though I was not under any pressure to play the game fast or flawlessly. Now, I think it's happening to me with Boulder Dash. I am no longer able to play the game at normal speed because I keep trying to follow the speed run route and getting trapped or killed.

I share the echo of the experiences you posted about.

I did stupid things BEFORE I did my first TAS. In SMW I fly around like a maniac all the time, doing things most people would call really dumb. Stuff like flying through castles, or in places where you generally don't have room (or safety) to do so. Most of the time it turns out fine, and it's in the name of fun. So yay!

Hmm I've always tried to finish games "perfectly" (although this had a different definition for me than for speedruns). For example I spent several months with the RPG Baldur's Gate, because I had to explore every pixel of every map, open every little box, and of course finish every little quest as well. In RTS games like Starcraft or Age Of Empires I always explored the whole map and tried to kill every enemy (if possible), although this was often not used to finish the level. And in ego shooters with quicksave/-load I always try to not get hit at all (unless it's unavoidable) and get a 100% hit statistic (if the game keeps any). I remember in one Medal of Honour level I had fired like 160 shots, which killed 165 enemies :D It takes a lot more time to play games like that, but for me it's fun :) Oh and considering emulator games... sometimes I curse the quicksave/-load buttons, because they can really make a game less fun :(

Everytime I play Mario 2 now, I try jumping across large pits by jumping on birds with Luigi. It usually doesn't work, and I feel bad.

I'm really bad about doing this. I just played through Super Metroid and found myself saving at every room transition, loading if I screwed up a room. I did wind up with a 100% time of 1:11, though. My best is 1:37 without save stating. I find myself doing this more and more. I have to force myself to play normally sometimes.
If for honesty, you want apologies, I don't sympathize.

I can't say I have this problem either. More the opposite I think. I like to get 100% (if possible) in games I play. Like in Faxanadu I would try to beat the game with every item in my inventory ;) One of my goals in gaming is to get everything in Final Fantasy 7, but I guess that will take some time.

Hehe, crap ;). Oh well. I guess I play games different when I don't perform tool-assisted speedrunning on them.

Only for some games. Most notable are Super Mario Bros. and Umihara Kawase. Usually not though.

It's bad enough when you have this feeling in games. How about in real life. While driving. Yeah, I had that once for a split second.

I'm the best Sonic 1 / Sonic 3 Competition Mode speed runner in the world and I don't even bother trying to emulate on a console what I can do on an emulator. There's really no point.

When i play for fun i am very carefull and take my time. But when i was recording for the speedruns competitions i often found myself trying to make the run cooler by doing impreesive an difficult moves, only untill i realized that was not the purpose, so i got back to being fast but safe.

Not for most games, but after watching the world record videos at vortiginous I have become a very impatient Super Monkey Ball player, trying over and over to complete a level as fast as possible, etc. The setup of the game lends itself quite well to this tactic, sure, but still.

Yeah, I noticed this, but I kinda had that to begin with. I am a perfectionist, after all. Although I should note that I'm actually trying to do actual speedruns which I'm hoping to eventually submit to SDA when I get them down right. Specifically I hope to beat the Symphony of the Night run currently up and I'm trying to get a good path for Megaman X6 which doesn't involve getting X to PA status.
If life were an RPG, I'd be an NPC.

Oh no. The voices of the people who have tried to correct our ways over the months here, the experienced players who told us we were destroying gaming, are coming back to haunt me. Why didn't we listen in time? What have we done? What irrepairable damage have we caused by our foolish ways? *cough* Seriously though, I can't say I have this problem either. Sure it's fun to waste a life now and then trying to perform some crazy deathdefying trick, and sometimes it even works. But for normal playing I don't use savestates. Exceptions have been to beat some childhood game I could never get trough (I still can't beat Battletoads though), or to be able to resume playing next day without keeping the computer on all night.

its physically impossible for me to play the second level without killing birdo with the key.... i MUST kill him with the key everytime even though it usually take me 5 continues and alot of wasted time to do it.
