Hi air_devil how you been mate? Finally my finals is finished and done so I played just recently the final boss and beat both of them (Ing and DS). I got a final time of 30h and 75% done. As you may tell I certainly did not rush when I completed the game, I took it really easy or slow I should say but in overall Im pretty satisfied with my run. Compare with MP I did better this time. My battle against Ing (in the third phase) was pretty nice :) I only used the Annihilator Beam (correct spelling?) against him and it worked like a charm. Finished him off in a few minutes and it was pretty easy. In overall this game seemed/seems sofar better made than MP. Metroid Prime had so many tricks and glitches but this one seems to have less room for glitches and tricks. I have not followed the discussions on the metroid prime2 echoes forum but I can't imagine how you can for instance skip a major upgrade (such as light suit) if you are going to do a speedrun/fastest time. My point is; this time, Retro Studios has done better job than before (not that MP were bad, it kicked ass) + I got the feeling that its more interconnected compared with Metroid Prime. I really enjoyed every bit of this game, Its so many things that makes this game sooo damn good (for instance the graphic amazed me).

FYI, Radix has just posted up a 2:11 any% run that makes use of three major sequence breaks: * skip dark suit * gravity boost and grapple beam before seekers * early screw attack hosted at archive.org or hosted at SDA Quite entertaining, definitely worth a watch.

I think you can improve Radix time by quite a bit. 1:20-ish should be the perfect time. And when someone does a 100% run the time should be near 1:40.

Sounds like you've all got it down! As for me, I still haven't beaten it. Went on vacation with the family and didn't bring the cube with me. I wish I had though, this was supposed to be a ski/snowboard vacation, but on Day1 I tore my MCL in my knee. So instead of snowboarding I got to do physical therapy and watch a lot of TV. I wish I had my cube!!! Oh well. When I get back to LA I'll try to beat it. If not... I'll just pretend that I'm Angerfist or Kip or Raddix. And claim I beat it! :D Take care and happy holidays everbody!

Behold, a few years since the last post, it's time to revive this thread. The best way to do it is by presenting MilesSMB's earth-shattering recent world record run of Prime 2 101% run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnYz7GwRbqo The second half of the run really picks up the pace. Everything goes faster. It's like Miles was getting warmed up in the first half of his run :) What makes this run incredibly poetic is that he smashed sparky's old segmented 2:25 record in a single segment (1:56)! Now that's impressive! Congratulations to Miles. I asked him if he would consider tasing this lovely game and he was a bit sceptical about it, but we'll see. He said he would most definitely help anyone tasing this game. Now when I saw his recent tas, I began imagining how crazy a tas would look like. Imagine every turn, morphing/unmorphing, pre-selecting weapons, instant-shooting a door via unmorphing and shooting at the same time. Ladies and gentlemen, only this should at least save 1-2 minutes in a 100% run. Maybe 1 minute in an any% run (comparing with a speedrun). I hope someone brave (Miles :P) comes forth and commence tasing! Edit: Lol at my prediction for a 100% run 2-3 posts above, which was made a few years ago.. :)

I am so excited! Many wonderful things is happening to Dolphin right now. This revision http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/source/detail?r=41652d6b1f391fdcd0f599463f689c0299cdc007&name=FifoBusy should make Metroid Prime 2 and 3 tasable. Could someone please verify this? I am also curious if the loading times are emulated more or less, compared with Metroid Prime.

No, it's the same as MP1 (i.e. non-existant).

Yes but have you compiled Dolphin with the latest revision of the FifoBusy branch?

They're still just as non-existant as ever...

Load times will never be emulated, that would just be silly.

Not being able to use tricks that depend on a room taking time to load is just silly?

I'm tempted to say yes, but i dunno. I was not aware of such tricks when i made my last post.

The current any% route relies on being able to go out of bounds and have rooms load around you once you've entered them. That wouldn't work if they loaded before you got to them.

Granted, there's generally an alternative to get back in bounds (Main Gyro Chamber would be annoying though, no idea what the best thing to do there would be). Still, it's completely changing how it has to be done compared to an actual console. :\

There was a discussion about emulation of loading times here. One of the major points brought up in that thread was that the loading time for every GameCube is different because of slight changes in every disc drive and laser, so there is no universal length of time that each load takes.

No universal length, but certainly there is a minimum and maximum length that can be used as a standard for runs .. right?

Fully agree with you here. Dolphin must be able to emulate at least some loading time. The above link that I provided fixed the crash/freeze when you play Metroid Prime 2 and 3 so it most probably has nothing to do with emulating loading times. I am 100% sure we will get there in the near future.

From what I remember, there used to be an option to throttle transfer rate to the rate of the GameCube or Wii drive (depending on game), but I think it was just forced to always on and the option was removed. I don't believe there was any simulation of seek time or anything like that added though.

Hi! I'm currently playing with the idea of doing a TAS of metroid prime 2. I am very aware that I am not the perfect candidate for this since it would be my first TAS and I do not know this game very well. But I really enjoyed playing it as a kid, so i got that goin' for me, which is nice ^^ Anyway, my plan is to experiment a bit during the summer, and then I will decide how serious I am about this ^^ So for now, I have tried to configurate dolphin according to what is said there http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12484. I think everything works fine (I was able to do the ILS at the beginning). However it only runs at about 20 fps XD. So here are my questions: Does it matter? ^^ If yes, Is there any options in dolphin I could change to improve that, while keeping everything TAS-compatible? PS: I do not speak english very well, so please forgive me if I do any mistake :)

It's more important to look at the VPS/VIs than the FPS, not all games run at 60 FPS. But even if the VPS/VIs is low, it doesn't mean that there will be a problem with playback, it could simply mean that your computer is too weak to run that section of the game at full speed, which doesn't really matter in a TAS since you should not be running it at full speed. It is recommended to use original dumped DSP ROMs over the packaged ones though, so if you can find originals or dump them yourself from a Wii you should consider doing it.

Hi! And thank you for your answer! The VPS is about the same as the FPS, that is very low, but I did try to dump a minute or two of video and it was running smoothly :) I have some troubles dumping the DSP though: DSPSpy seams to fail to write on my SD card. Maybe because it is an SDHC card? An other audio problem: I tried to record the sound for a minute or so, but when I open the file I only get 13seconds of sound, which seem to be a super-fast version of the actuel gameplay ^^ Is it related to the DSP problem? I have looked at this page. Is it still up to date? In particular do I need the AVhack thingy? This may not be the best place to ask this, but I also have some (small) emulation bugs: During the very first cinematic, there is an image that stays in the background for the entire cinematic, causing some flickering. However it disappears at the end of the cutscene so it is not too much of a problem. Still, does anyone know of a way to prevent that? [/url]

Not being able to dump the DSP roms is a question probably more suited for the Dolphin forums on dolphin-emu.org. I do not know enough about Dolphin and GameCube / Wii emulation to help with that. To make your own encodes having an A/V sync hack modded Dolphin is recommended, you can still dump video using the original builds, but as you see there is an issue with the playback speed. If you submit the finished TAS here and it gets accepted, an encoder will do the encoding for you, so from that aspect there is no need to make your own encodes. However, having encoded WIPs often helps getting feedback on your progress, and WIP often. It would suck to get the TAS rejected because you forgot about a certain trick. Regarding graphical issues, if it's nothing serious it will probably be deemed acceptable anyway, and to me this sounds like it's not that serious. Otherwise the best way to handle it is to report them on the Dolphin issue tracker if they still occur in the latest Git version of Dolphin using the game-ini settings.
