Land of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse (SMS) Any%
I began to run this game a while ago, then the idea of making a TAS came into my mind as I could discover new glitches and it would probably be a fun TAS to watch.

Set up

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.5.3

Game objectives

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Genre: Platform

Comments

This is a sequel to the classic Castle of Illusion game. Though not as famous as its predecessor or the Genesis one, this game has many improvements and new mechanics from the series, such as several abilities, star collectibles and creative puzzles. This is a fairly long game for SMS or even 8-bit standards, as it doesn't repeat levels. Worth pointing that the graphics are in the edge of the best of the best SMS can make.

Stage comments

Lake

The fastest way of swimming is jumping on the surface of water, you gonna see me doing this a lot of times on water areas.

Blacksmith's Castle

The tricky part of this level is the RNG of the jumping fireballs, It's also hard to manipulate. I've managed to defeat the boss of this stage in one cycle with frame perfect block throws.

Castle Ruins

The autoscroller is a pain, it has a lot of lag so killing enemies reduce some of it, I had to figure a way of not losing frames while killing enemies and throwing the key at the button, turns out some lag can't be avoided. After this boss I get the shrinking potion, this allows me a trick to go enter doors quickly. I can reset mickey's acceleration to 0 using the shrinking ability and go through doors faster.

Toy Workshop

This level has a lot of neat tricks, also, Using a frame perfect throw, I can avoid the key to not be destroyed at doors, allowing the double use, in this case for pressing a button. Shrinking on ledges makes mickey drop a little faster. The boss on this level has RNG as the number of seconds he stays on each cycle, so I had manipulate it to get the fastest pattern.

Temple Ruins

On this level I get a damage boost to avoid grabbing the jar on the second screen. On the end of the level I stand a while waiting to drop down. I do this to get the glitched first cycle on the boss, it may not seem so, but it saves quite some time.

Good Princess's Castle

This is little glitch I've found while running the game. By some reason, placing the spring over the key (or through it) and jumping over it while small, makes you go through the platform and skip the entire level. This isn't just a frame glitch, but you have to keep jumping in a certain interval to get it right, jumping too fast (using turbo) doesn't work.

Sand Castle

The boss on this level has a lot of RNG, and it was one of the places that took me most time on the TAS, as I had to keep rerecording the fight til I get the perfect pattern.

Phantom's Castle

On the third screen of the level. the chain balls jumps are frame perfect and were really hard to do.

Thanks

Thanks for the SMS speedrun community for encouraging me on making this TAS.

Hav you tested out the glitches from my WIP? (no IP currently...) when I saw the fiirst stage, I thought there was something missing, and.. about the key-out-of-screen on castle ruins stage? And about the palace ruins, when you have to wait some seconds to make the boss stick to the wall, when my run have no wait there? I won't vote until I hear these explanations >_> But if it gets accepted first, congratulations, your tricks on good princess, desert, nearly all other later stages, and the bosses, ... are much better than mine ^^ EDIT: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1923 Just in case because the title was not obvious ... u.u

Well, I didn't know there was a WIP or any TAS project for Land of Illusion before even though I searched (the thread title wasn't very clear). I can't answer your questions before watching your TAS, but unfortunately it always desync on the Lake stage. not sure if you're using another ROM or emulator (i've tried Bizhawk 1.71 and Dega 1.16).

Should run on Dega 1.16 MAME core or Dega-S normally.. Of course my run wasn't intended to be a TAS when I did it because I was simply showing the Master System community on Brazil what happened with a 0-star run... but there are tricks to be explored there, I believe they could be added to your project and turn out an even better TAS.. ^^ ....just remembered that my time left on Forest Stage was 256 and your TAS got 255 ... it was probably that skip ladder jump on the end of the stage.. maybe I never released THIS version of the WIP ... well, it's here =P (same emulator, Dega 1.16 MAME core or Dega-S .... if I'm not mistaken most versions of BizJaws run it too, as I was migrating the WIP to it)

Ok i watched your TAS. The trick on the key at the end of the autoscroller is pretty cool, didn't actually know about that. (does that only work on that part of the autoscroller?) About the palace ruins stage, the reason why you didn't have to wait is that I shrinked and I didn't lose time grabbing the rocks. while you did in your recording. It's a small matter and I need to check which one is faster. it's probably a difference of frames. I may do more changes for this TAS in the future (though I don't plan on playing this anytime soon.) So anybody's welcome to improve it in the meantime. Thanks for showing me these cool stuff btw.

I voted Meh because there were a few times you were noticeably sloppy. Like when you had to run back because you couldn't make it to the next gap. Other than a few mistakes like that, the run was good.

I haven't test yet, but doing that before would save a good amount of frames =P

There was this one auto scroller in the sand land where Mickey was small and he ran forwards, but he then had to turn back.

If you notice, i run back before every spike. Even if doesnt seem like it, its frame perfect (exactly one frame of taking damage), that's why I thought it would be a nice trick. There isn't a way to keep running and dodge the spikes. So i chose that over standing still and waiting - that would look really boring.

This is a nice little game. I liked how some of the game music was based on classic Disney songs like "I've Got No Strings on Me" and that one from The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The run had a good pace and a lot of neat small tricks. I especially liked the part when you skipped an entire stage. Yes vote!
