I am trying to find a good list of video games that can be used for a tournament. They can not use an online DRM system (Steam, Battle.Net, ect.) and PC may not be the best choice for games due to what I have for resources. Any suggestions? I am trying to avoid fighters if possible.

Does it need to be local multiplayer, netplay multiplayer or either is OK? Twinkle Star Sprites [Arcade] is a split-screen competitive shmup that can be played local multiplayer or (I think using Mame and GGPO?) netplay. Catherine [PS3, X360] is a puzzle game with a competitive two player mode.

More context would be helpful. Something like the PAX "Omegathon" has totally different requirements from, say, a Street Fighter tournament.

Anything that has either a timer or a points score could be used, no?

There's always the usual high-level competetive games, Counter-Strike, Quake, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, you can play in a LAN setting. May be hard to find old DRM-free versions of those games, though.

I can use a LAN but getting PCs together would be challenging. The game should be reasonable on time per round/set. The main issue is that I am trying to run this at my college and we can't run a 12+ hour tournament. Maby 3-4 hours at most. Counter-Strike would be good but no Steam makes that a challenge.

Yeah, stick to consoles with split-screen or simultaneous multiplayer, then.

The College is doing that for sure. But, that's at the end of the semester.

What game(s) do this? I know Call of Duty works but screen peeking is a factor as well. I can setup a router or Hub to network consoles locally. No Internet though.

It would be easier to come up with games if you listed what consoles are feasible.

If you don't want fighters, your options are basically competitive puzzle games, racing, and FPS.

http://www.co-optimus.com/ for the LAN, you'll have all the nostalgia FPS games, they'll get a new life with mods (doom 3 with coop mod can be fun) red alert 1, 2 or the old version of starcraft / warcraft 3 + some DOTA mods on Warcraft 3 are a good solution

We can organize several Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.
