Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog 2 'Playaround'

I was inspired to make this run for entertainment, and I hopefully make it fun for people. I did thinking, Who wins each zone?, after you will see in the movie, there was even some areas worked very improvised, but became a way very good

Objetives:

  • Playaround
  • Entertainment
  • 2-Players used
  • Heavy luck manipulation

About the gameplay:

It runs from the beginning of the game, selecting "2 Players VS" then select the zone to compete with Sonic and Tails, for see, who wins more points, time, rings, etc. The goal is to collect more rings, more you score, item boxes and the best time (In-game) to win the zone. The ideality of gameplay is to know who is the fastest

Time in Table:

Zones Point of Sonic Tails Win
EH1 Score 100 100 Tied
Time 21.21 21.20 Tails
Rings 30 17 Sonic
Total rings 30 17 Sonic

EH2 Score 100 0 Sonic

Well, in case you have some trouble with a certain zone, I will try to re-make or attempt to make it more entertaining. Because that's my goal of this movie

feos: Entertainment-oriented runs need good viewer feedback to be accepted, as Vault can only keep speed-oriented runs. This one generated quite low level of enjoyment, so I have to reject it. A speed-oriented competition mode run can still be published regardless of the feedback, if it's optimized enough.

Out of curiousity: is it possible to cause horizontal underflow in this mode? Voting Yes, as it’s Sonic, but I’m not much familiar with this mode. By the way, I think it’s possible to make Sonic and Tails behave symmetrical in Special Stages by recording 2 tracks where both players are controlled by one d-pad, but L/R of the second are swapped.

This was unexpectingly entertaining to watch! Also Tails! <3 The quirks didn't wear and made me laugh frequently. I saw the first demo that you had posted in the Sonic 2 thread and was curious about how this would look. This was finely done. Voting Yes!

I'm on the fence with this, I'm not really sure what to make of it. It did have it's moments, but there is also significant detractors compared to just a regular 1p playthrough. BTW, I noticed all the music was different compared to the regular stages. Isn't that Mystic Caves tune supposed to be from the Hidden Palace stage?

Ehh, the special stages really didn't feel tool-assisted. I mean, I know there's limited opportunities to show stuff off in what is effectively an autoscroller, but the degree of precision shown is definitely not superhuman. The other stages were okay, I guess, and it's nice to see the unusual attributes of the vs. mode (e.g. the monitors that switch the two players when activated).

If Mayro 3 could, then Sanic 2 can too!

Yes, the 2-player stages all have different music. In the iOS/Android remake, Hidden Palace Zone uses 2-player Mystic Cave Zone's music.

If that's the case, then it makes me suspect there must have been other stages that were cut from the game.

Wood Zone, Hidden Palace Zone, and Genocide City Zone - though to be fair Genocide City Zone is only a speculated name as far as I'm aware. There's a hack that "restores" the zones into the game, but the restored zones don't really match the design philosophy of the rest of Sonic 2 - they feel more like rejected levels from Sonic 3.

It was the WIP name for Cyber City Zone, which became Metropolis Zone Act 3. The assets for Cyber City Zone got recycled for The Machine in Sonic Spinball. THE MORE YOU KNOW! As for this run, I'm not entirely feeling it. Regular stages are okay, Special Stages don't look very tool-assisted. Personally, I'd rather see a run that ties things up as much as possible (which would add more Special Stages, as they are tiebreakers for regular stages).

I wanted to share this, to see who seemed to everyone, I'm not totally confident that is published, even for vault. Totally I don't want special stage because there are too many lag and does not share much like a tool-assisted I respect the opinions of everyone :) It is a playaround style, so well ... The music of the zones is what I like and competition between Sonic and Tails in the first 3 zones are you most interested.

That makes sense. After doing a bit of research on Hidden Palace Zone, it's my belief it was going to be a secret level that could be accessed after obtaining all emeralds. You would be transported there, and on completion. Obtain the ability to become Super Sonic. In the end, it was most likely scrapped due to time constraints, lack of memory or difference of opinion.

I feel that this movie is entertaining and boring at the same time. Magic.

This has been confirmed by Yuji Naka in an interview. It was cut because of timing coinstraints.

Oh, I'd also like to point out: the ROM filename listed isn't correct. There isn't a "Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (W) [!].bin" in the GoodGen set. Instead, you have:
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (W) (REV00) [!].gen
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (W) (REV01) [!].gen
This movie does not sync with REV00, you need to use REV01. I suggest editing the submission to show the correct ROM filename.

Kiske - You need to use the ROM name that BizHawk shows when you hit the little checkmark in the bottom left, that way there's no confusion as to which game version is to be used. Honestly, I think most of us are going to have REV01 anyway, but it's something that we need to be certain of.

I don't use BizHawk, because habitually I used Gens. Some day I will use it. By the way, I can change the ROM name for not have problems of confusion

Gens has a bunch of builds for Sonic TASing, so I'm not surprised about that. You don't need to make the TAS in BizHawk in this case, it's just we go with a database of game names that BizHawk is tuned to check - it's just easier to open the rom in BizHawk and get the name from there than it is to submit a run and be told you had the wrong name.
