Cool is seeing the circus strongman pick up a hefty weight with one arm. Not cool is knowing full well ahead of time that the weight he's about to pick up is made out of foam rubber and actually weighs about 20 ounces. The latter is how i see a lot of these videos, as a bunch of people picking up a piece of foam rubber and acting like it's cool. See, i have history with a lot of these games. They filled my childhood, as i'm sure they did others. You beat SMB, you did it in one run, period. You do it in one life, you rocked. The entirety of the coolness in beating the game was that you did it in one go with no bullshit. Just you and the game. Same with Mega Man, CastleVania, etc.. The whole point of being satisfied with beating these things was that they were so hard and that you HAD to do it in one run. The games simply do not hold up without those elements, and slo-mo/re-recording all but remove them. Doing this stuff out of sheer practice is what makes all of us grown-up NES kiddies go "Cooooooool!", but apparently, this pathetic reliance on re-recording is now commonplace. "Wow, i can beat a game without getting hit when it's playing at 1/3 the normal speed!" Well, no shit, sherlock. I personally can beat Dracula with only 2 bars of health if i use savestates out the ass. Big fucking deal. And this is the problem. The site acknowledges that the strings are showing, but most of you are apparently too stupid to realize that you can't have a proper trick like that. When you analyse why landing just on the edge of a ledge in front of an enemy in Mega Man is cool, it's because you instinctively know as a player yourself how much skill it takes to do that IN REAL TIME. When slo-mo comes into play? Again, big fucking deal. It cheapens the trick to the point of triviality. You effectively eliminate the only reason for watching these things in the first place. At that point, it's just the run maker yanking himself off for the benefit of himself and everyone else in the circle jerk also making these superfluous "speedruns". Wow, hey, yet another video where the guy gets right next to a boss and follows his every move. Wonder SLO-MO how he SLO-MO does SLO-MO that? By then, the thrill is gone, because you've willingly thrown it away.

Read this first, before acting like a jackass. READ! No one push you into watching the movies. If you feel like doing a speedrun, do that. We make the movies for fun and entertainment.

Your analygy is faulty. The idea of these movies is not to demonstrate impressive skills of players. We're not cheating anyone. We are creating movies that are intented to look OBVIOUSLY impossible for normal playing. Using rerecording and other means to achieve it is at core to the genre. If you have read the why & how page and still don't get it or don't accept it, please don't come here to complain. EDIT 1: I will delete all further flames from this author. Sorry about this.

The point of these videos has nothing to do with skill, and no timeattack maker would think he is something special because he can do extraordinary stuff using slowdown and save states. Is it so impossible for you to understand that some people like myself could enjoy watching these videos? If you do not find these videos entertaining, that's your problem. Why does it bother you that someone likes something you do not? You seem like an intelligent enough person, and I trust you have read all the "whyhow" pages Bisqwit's site has. Please read them again and this time consider thinking about the content.

It takes a completely different skill to make these movies: cleverness. The skilled player uses all of the tricks available to him, glitches, bugs, wacky game physics, and the advantages given to him by the emulator to shave seconds off his performance. The thrill comes when a new timeattack is posted that beats the previous time. Whenever this happens, I ask "HOW did they do it?" The answer is usually very entertaining. Note: I wrote this reply for the benefit of the other users of this forum. You seem content with your viewpoint.

i think this topic must be deleted, it's an insult made by someone who didn't even care to read the "big red sign on the front door" saying the videos are meant to be funny, not to show off.

If he argued intelligently, his post may have been more worthy of looking at.

Bottom line is, if you want to be known as one of the best at the game, a time attack won't do it for you. Everyone here knows that. Nobody here is going to be known as a skillful player by making time attacks so you don't have anything to worry about. The people here are instead devoted to showing you how entertaining these classic games can be, and their work should not be attacked by your irrational rants. I can say what others have been telling you repeatedly, but I won't; I sure hope you see thing clearer now by reading the posts before this one. In addition, go ask people who make pure speedruns without savestates what they think of time attacks. Many of them don't share your hostility. In fact, people making pure speedruns look at time attacks as a learning resource to assist them in further runs, myself included.

You know, you just might be the first person to ever bring up this point! I can't beleive no one has ever brought this up before! I mean, if someone had, wouldn't we have stopped by now? Or maybe, this has already been tried, and you are just wasting our time? Go away.

Guys, before pointing out to him the FAQ and requesting his post be deleted.... Here's what I don't get. Why do you come and sign up with this forum? It's not like we're forcing you to watch these videos. I never understood why, on the internet, people find forums of things they don't like and post on those forums how they don't like them. Isn't that a waste of everyone's time? The only thing I can think of is maybe you're affected some way by the videos, as if they're ruining your livelihood. If you're some TG guy, we've had threads like this before. Maybe try reading those. If you're not, I don't see why you would care to even voice your opinion? Are you doing us a favor? Maybe we'll see the light and go outside. Thank you! God bless you! The fact of the matter is this isn't cool. And you know what else? Real life speed gaming isn't cool either. Practicing Mario 1 over and over and over and over again after you've already mastered it just so you can shave off a few seconds is very VERY dorky. Go post on TG how they're not cool. Lemme go further. Video games aren't cool. Well, except for the sport ones, or the ones with chicks with big breasts. Write a letter to Nintendo how they're uncoolifying the kiddies. Still though, some people get some kick out of making and watching these videos which apparently killed your family and pillaged your village. Cool or uncool, you come off as a giant prick. Ramzi

I just wanted to post that "killed your family and pillaged your village," thing. Haha. That should be the title of the website. NES Videos - Pillaging Your Village Since 2003

interesting how his one post spurred so many replies in such a short period of time. Proves that the time attack debate is still a hot topic.

I may be a geek and a computer nerd (ok, I am), but personally find it cool to see how a game can be played through when a computer is told how to play it perfectly, without a flaw, as fast as possible, pushing the game physics to their limits. And that's what these fmv files are: They are instructions for the computer to play the game as perfectly as possible. I don't care how these fmvs were created, the only thing I care is that they show how to push the game to its limits.

I don't think anyone else disagrees with you there. Matter-of-factly, there are niche markets for people to see being nerdy isn't appreciated.

Indeed, it is a recording that can be played autonomous of interaction from the player (since that's already been accomplished)

Three Cheers for the Game Movie Makers!!! :)
