-Used Gens ver .9c
-Takes damage to save time... quite a bit.
-Aims for fastest possible time
El Viento is a platform game by Wolfteam... a programming team that operated under Telnet, the Japanese company responsible for 90% of the games in the 16-bit era that had extended anime cutscenes and/or cute babe heroines. It stars Annette, a gal who wields a boomarang and magic powers, and is traveling to world to stop evil or something. It has some straaange level design and a depressing ending. It's a spinoff of Wolfteam's "Earnest Evans" and it had a (terrible) sequel on the Sega CD called "Annette Again".
If you haven't ever played this game (not many people did), I recommend it. It's pretty fun, and had nice-looking graphics for the Genesis at the time.
Like Megaman 3+, this game has a dash move that's meant to be used sparingly, but in this case, the dash is quite a bit faster and continuous. This makes for an interesting time attack, so I went for it.
7531 re-records is pretty hardcore for me, though it's not absolutely perfect; with a missed shot here and a split-second late jump there... But the result is still something no human could possibly do, and I think it's pretty entertaining. I'd say it's about 95% perfect at the moment.
Someday I will have another go at this. But not anytime soon, I'm afraid. Gens desynched a LOT when I made this run; it doesn't seem to like this game. Thus, making the video was a bit of an exercise in persistance.
A lot of hits are taken in the run, but hits rarely slow you down in the game, and it's actually just one of those games where... you get hit a lot. You'll see that most of the hits take very little damage off the life bar, yet if you play the game normally, it can still prove quite difficult in places.
The game has five spells which you just pick up on the way. Needless to say, using them efficiently was a big challenge in this time attack.
There are a few other things, but I don't want to ramble too much. If anyone has any questions I'll answer them in the discussion thread.
I hope you enjoy this movie!
EDIT: You can see a much-improved run of the first level only in this file: http://omake.studio-zoe.com/ElVientoPARTTWO-SuperHappy.zip
It desynchs shortly into the second level. Not going to go into the specifics here, but I'll just say I won't be finishing the second version of this run until a more stable Genesis recording emulator is released. Still, I'm pretty prousd of what I did with the first level. I thnk it's pretty much perfect now.

Really hard to say what can be done faster here, as it goes so fast it is hard to follow. And it's not linear fast in the way sonic does it, so its rather hard to follow, coupled with very (IMO) confusing graphics. The run however seems fast, and I didnt see any clear missed shots as you claim to have :P

It does get a little over-the-top toward the end. The programmers seemed to be really proud of the giant explosion graphics they managed to create, so even tiny little bullets and bats explode spectacularly. I can see how it'd get in the way. ^^;; It's not quite as obscuring when the game is played regularly. A lot of the game (especially the 4th stage, with all its "puzzle" elements) is more fun to watch if you've played it before, but the same can be said for almost any time attack. I have fond memories of this game. I guess it wasn't very popular, though. ^^;

I liked this, it is a little hard to follow but I guess that's a good thing that it's so fast. Actually the boss fights were what confused me the most. I don't think you took all that much damage like you said (or at least, I sure take a lot more damage than you did when I play). Some of the graphics in this game (giant explosion, splashes, squid monsters) are among the most horribly pixelated graphics I've ever seen. (And what a sad ending... the rest of the game's story didn't do a very good job of setting it up though.) Anyway, yes from me.

Why has this run not been published yet? It's bloody awesome. One small annoyance: there's an in-game glitch where the ending stops short on Zigfried's speech, but that can hardly be helped. Other than that, hurry and post this run; it'd be a crime not to.

I played a little before watching, and i could blast through the first floor pretty quick playing normally (and playing for the first time), it wasn't much different than what's in the TAS. But the other levels of course are quite crazy in layout (differently from the first level stratight line). So yea this looks good, but it looks like the Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt run, which should be published first, imo.

I can't believe I forgot to vote after all this time. I watched this run when it was first submitted about 6 months ago and it was a fast-paced, entertaining run. Therefore I vote yes. FODA: I think this run should be published first because it was submitted before the Pugsley's scavenger hunt run. That, and the games are similar in how popular they are (very obscure).

Wow... thanks for publishing this. =) Anon: A bit of dialogue after the "Annette stands in horror" line is cut too. The game actually does that if you choose to skip the previous cutscenes. I don't know if it's actually a bug, or if it's something they programmed in under the assumption that if you skipped all the previous cutscenes, you don't want to see the full ending. ^^; I hope to make an improved run of this as soon as Gens 3 is released!

Is El Viento really as obscure as Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt? Besides what I remember, on gamefaqs for instance, there are more El Viento reviews than there are for all 3 versions of Pugsley combined. Also, there is at least some forum activity for El Viento, as opposed to none for Pugsley. =p
