I hear he helped bring about EarthBound, which is definitively my favorite game of all time. This is the saddest news I've had in a long, long time.

According to one of my inside sources he was really the engine behind modernizing Nintendo. He always pushed to have bigger specs in Nintendo consoles etc. He confided in my source, “I always get voted down by the other chairs of the company (who are all grumpy old men) saying, ‘We know what our audience wants.’ What can I do?”. My source jokingly replied, “All you can do is hire someone to assassinate them.” I’ve been hoping all this time that the rest of the chairs at Nintendo would die off, but instead the absolute worst possible outcome happened. This is definitely a blow to Nintendo, and I no longer look forward to the future of that company. L. Spiro

Nintendo's future is definitely uncertain right now. Will they stay in the console market, or leave it? No one knows at this point. Hopefully, they put someone in charge that has big dreams like Iwata did. He left a real legacy behind.

Nintendo definitely have the will and resources to bring out another console. Sony however is a different kettle of fish. Given that all their divisions bar the PlayStation and movie division are taking a financial killing. I think Sony could very well end up bankrupt within the next 3-4 years, with their PlayStation division being bought out by someone like Apple or Amazon. As for Microsoft, it's 50/50 whether they'll bring out another console.

So, about Iwata himself, I didn't pay much attention to Nintendo's internal politics, but when he spearheaded a board of directors salary pay cut because he believed so strongly in the Wii U and refused to lay people off, I had to care. He was a programmer and a gamer, and he also understood business on a level that many executives will never reach. I can only hope that the next person to step into his shoes understands enough to follow his footsteps.

I'll admit, I didn't agree with some of the decisions he made at times, but you can't help but unconditionally respect a man who would rather take a pay cut than lay off workers because he believes in his dreams so fully. The worst part of all of this is he will never get the chance to see his dreams bare fruit. He will never have a hand in another game. I'm sorry. His passing has hit me pretty hard. I didn't realize until he passed how many games from my childhood and up through the years he had a hand in. I mean, he even had a hand in Pokémon Gold/Silver. He managed to compress all of the Johto region so they could add Kanto into them to make those games the best of the series. Just knowing he will never make another game is awful.

I plan to do a several day streaming marathon in honor of Mr. Iwata. And I see no better way than to play through EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound. Maybe I'll play the Kirby Collection for Wii as well. And Return to Dreamland.

So many of you should know the book Iwata-San: Iwata Satoru wa konnakotowo hanashiteita. It's been out since November 2019. However there was no word about an official English release. Today, it has been announced than an English Translation will be Published by VIZ Media. The book in English is titled Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Nintendo’s Legendary CEO. This book will recount details of the life of deceased Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, including various interviews with creators like Itoi and Nintendo mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto. It will also include thoughts directly from Iwata, seemingly pulled at least in part from the popular Iwata Asks segments that Nintendo used to run.
