Some commenters have indeed speculated that the current console generation might be the last (of traditional desktop consoles, not necessarily gaming platforms in general). I recently wrote myself some thoughts on that: http://grindedgear.blogspot.fi/2015/06/is-this-last-console-generation.html (Note that it doesn't mean the death of video games, just of traditional desktop consoles.)

I could not care less if this will be the last generation or not, to be honest. I particularly don't enjoy most of the modern games and I'm perfectly fine simply playing the old ones. I have enough of them to keep me entertained for 1 life time. Most games nowadays are far too complex for my tastes. I no longer have patience for them since I'm already becoming a little old. I don't have the same energy and hype I used to have when I was younger. So nowadays I have far more fun with simplicity, which is what older games generally offer.

Nowadays its either incredibly simple one button apps or AAA games that get forgotten in a year. Also huge reliance on stable servers, which is annoying. Edit: Oh yea, and pay2win. lol

I still love video games even though I have been playing them from the early 80's. While, of course, my standards have risen significantly compared to the times when video games were new and fantastic, every once in a while a new video game comes that's really exciting, wonderful, addictive and inspiring. For example, when I bought The Talos Principle I wasn't expecting much, but the game surprised me positively. Among a barrage of average games, it felt like a breath of fresh air. It was beautiful, it was deep, it was really interesting to play, and it was inspiring. It's certainly a gem among the cruft. (I'm also quite a sucker for graphically beautiful games, and I often enjoy new games based solely on their graphical prowess and beauty, but that's not the only reason. Sometimes a game is awesome because of its contents.)

The iOS version, however, was universally panned by critics, garnering a 35 out of 100 rating from Metacritic.[94] PocketGamer UK gave the game a 4/10, calling it "A port with potential ruined by obtrusively implemented IAPs".[95] Touch Arcade gave the game 1 star out of 5, criticizing the heavy use of In-App Purchases as well as how some of the save points (mainly the ones near bosses) have been disabled.[96] Digital Spy gave the game a rating of 2 out of 5, criticizing the overly sensitive and unresponsive controls and how the game auto-saves in the middle of a fight.
rofl. I have to buy save points now. Fuck this shit. Back in the original SNES version there was no such a thing. This is what I hate about mobile games. Horrible controls aside, you have to pay to unlock plenty of the game's content. It's like that one mobile version of Mega Man X. Back in the SNES original you could unlock armor upgrades through the stages. And now guess what? You have to purchase them as downloadable content. Not sure if you have to buy other things as well. inb4 when you beat a boss you don't get their weapon unless you buy it. So, yeah. But of course, there are many other examples of horrible mobile ports.

Can we get back to talking about how awesome a CEO Iwata was, and how tragic his sudden passing is?
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Do you think he would have minded if people talk about the state of modern games compared to classic games in a thread created to his memory? Do you really think that discussing video games is disrespectful to his memory?

Turning a celebration of a wonderful man into "Hey, did you guys know I bought The Talos Principle!?" is about as disrespectful as one could get without outright insulting Satoru Iwata himself. Talk about that game all you want anywhere else. This isn't - and won't ever be - the place for it.

Then we'll have to agree to disagree. Mr. Iwata and everybody here shared the same passion, our love for video games. If you think that discussing video games in honor of his memory is disrespectful, then I don't know what to say. Do you honestly think that he would have minded? Do you honestly think that he would have felt insulted at the idea of people discussing video games in memory of his passing? Are you completely seriously saying that mentioning one particular video game is "as disrespectful as one could get"? I don't think it's me who is insulting his memory, and his love for video games.

I don't see how discussing the state of the video game industry is somehow "disrespectful" to Iwata's memory. Currently, I don't own any of the next gen consoles, and that's saying something given that I've owned a console in every generation since the 16-bit era. That doesn't mean to say I'm not buying or playing games anymore. I've simply went back to playing retro games and obtaining rare, overlooked and obscure games. I'm put off by current gen consoles on the basis of having multi gigabyte patches, downloadable content, pay to play and having to be connected to the internet. It worries me if I buy a game then it might be worthless 10 years down the line. However, the biggest problems game wise is the spiraling budgets and the polarization of the games being released. Either you get shovelware or a AAA game. There is no happy medium. Games companies are being run by accountants. Instead of by people who're actually gamer's.

It was more that I was concerned that this was about to devolve into a discussion about how much freemium sucks.

Are you really so narcissistic that you have to defend the fact that you, specifically, came into this thread just to talk about yourself? A great man has tragically passed, and all of your posts have been "Look at my blog! I played the Talos Principle, what a great game! You know, I love video games, I've been playing them all my life..." I'm sure he'd just be pleased as punch to learn that someone out there is selfish enough to use his passing as nothing but an excuse to talk about themselves for a bit. It doesn't matter that Iwata loved video games. That doesn't magically give you or anyone else the right to try to turn this thread to themselves. I mean, at the very least, can you try to connect the conversation to Iwata? "Video games" in general is too tenuous of a connection to really defend. He was the CEO of friggin' Nintendo, you have an entire company's worth of games to talk about in here. There's a small place in this thread for talking about your own experiences, certainly, but that doesn't mean it's a dumping ground for anything video game related. If you haven't caught my subtlety, then let me just be blunt: Find a different thread to talk about this. Start one if you have to! If you're really so inspired to talk about video games, you have a near-infinite amount of places to do it! This is just not one of them.

Congratulations Samsara, you turned a thread made in remembrance of a great person into a pile of trash by acting like a complete asshole. I hope you are happy about yourself and your perceived higher moral ground.

Congrats mz for making this entire situation worse by not looking at the previous posts. Requesting the stupidity of mz and Warp to be split off this topic.
