would a speedrun be intresting? i know quite a few shortcuts (not just the obvious ones :p) but i can imagine that it can get boring since, aside from the shortcuts, its just going and going and going... best shortcuts are, flower cup level one (you can cut a huge chunk with a little practice, cut it too short and the game will not count your lap :)) and on i believe the ice level of the special cup, but thats been a while.

No, he means Super Mario Kart for Super Nintendo. Anyway, it would be hard to judge racing games as it's really all about how exciting a player can make it. For example, i wouldn't want to see someone take a shortcut and gain half a lap on everyone else, then end up having a lonely race for another 3 laps.

There were some movies for super mario kart. They were made with emulator and rerecords apparently by Japanese and they beat the world records by 1-2 seconds or something.

Speaking of Mario Kart, I have a question for Arc. Why is Mario Kart 64 listed as [Super] Mario Kart 64?

It is an artificial way of putting it near Super Mario Kart alphabetically.

i obviously meant the snes version as this is the snes forum i really dislike mario kart for the n64, or the gamecube. although the gamecube is better then the n64 version, the snes version > all.

I agree with you very much qFox, I love Super Mario Kart but I never like Mario Kart 64 at all. I personally would like seeing a time attack of the courses just as a way to improve my playing, but really that could be done without rerecording. What are the shortcuts you are talking about? Flower cup course one is the first chocolate island one, and the ice one is the one around the lake right? I don't know that I'm aware of any special shortcuts on those, please enlighten me. :)

Some people in the "Top games that haven't been done yet on SNES" topic said they'd like to see a time attack for this game, and I'd also like to see it, so I'm making this topic. Here are some things that can be discussed: 1. What should it be a movie of? I'd say a video going through all the races in time trials would be the most interesting. Do most of you agree, or would you rather see a time attack of all the cups in Mario GP mode? 2. Assuming that it'll be time trials, should there be just one video for every race, or one for each race? As far as I know there's no luck manipulation, so it shouldn't be a problem if you do them all in the same movie and then find a way to improve the first race. 3. Should the movie be non-shortcut, shortcut, or both? If both, should they be in the same movie where for each race with a shortcut it's just done twice, or different movies? 4. For races where you have to do something that you wouldn't normally do in a 5lap race to set up a fastlap, should the race be done another time for the fastlap, or should just the 5lap be done? 5. The most obvious thing to discuss is strategies of course. I'm not very good at this game so I probably can't be of much help, though you can find some videos here: http://www.geocities.com/smkplayerssite/smk_proof.htm Also, I think this topic has links to all the fastest vids: http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=SMK;action=display;num=1103671937

GP is boring; the AI is so bad it has to cheat in order to compete with you. Do all time trials in one; downloading all those smvs would be annoying. Do shortcut, because that's what people would be most interested in seeing. Strats will be a problem if they're kept secret by the record holders.

And Nintendo decided that they would keep the terrible AI cheating feature in Double Dash.

Deviance has a point there. Even though I would think it being entertaining to see all cups being played (preferably on 150cc because it's faster) it's hard to tell if you are actually breaking any records. The character that should be used is without question Bowser or Donkey because they have the best top speed. They lack of acceleration but that shouldn't be a problem because they can (they all can actually) get a boost from the start with just gasing at the right time. I know some tricks, for example in the last stage of Mushrom Cup you can hold to the left when jumping over the road and there hit a "hidden" jump and thus earn a bit time because you will then fly towards the goal line.

Strats will be a problem if they're kept secret by the record holders. There are many WR videos and videos close to the WRs available. Do shortcut, because that's what people would be most interested in seeing. I think a lot of people would be interested in seeing non-shortcut also, since non-shortcut is the main thing that people compete in.

No no no. Please no time trials. There are already nearly perfect time trial videos out there that were done on the consoles themselves. (Edit: Well, that's actually a lie, since some of the best videos aren't really available)I say the only way to make an interesting run would be making GP runs, with plenty of luck and glitch abusing. I'm not sure about the format, ie one video per cup or what. Also, 150cc mode and special cup must be unlocked, so that creates even more problems. (there might be a keypress combo to unlock everything at the start, but I don't know). If you insist on making time trials, here are the times that must be beaten for it to be worth anything (assuming the NTSC version will be used): http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Dome/3346/ntsc.htm This is the site I found (geoshitties sucking isn't my fault): http://www.geocities.com/smkplayerssite/ Here are some videos: http://www.geocities.com/smkplayerssite/smk_proof.htm Whatever the type of run that is made, someone needs to find out how the hell those top times were achieved.

I think most of the WRs can be significantly improved. I saw save state vids for a few of the races made by some Japanese guy that were quite a bit faster than the WRs. For example, I think the one for MC1 was something like 55 seconds. I'm not sure if he did all of the races or not, but I just have about 2 or 3 of them on my computer.

A GP vid would have the advantage of getting powerups. Feathers and mushrooms can be major boosts in some courses. On the bright side of having poor computer opponents, you would lap everyone multiple times, teasing and tormenting them while doing so.

One of the reasons that a TAS hasn't been done for this game is because even though it is a good game it wouldn't be that interesting to watch. Watching someone play time attack mode for each level wouldn't be that interesting and watching a video of grand prix would be almost the same. The only difference would be taking a few seconds at the beginning of the race to get in first place and once you are in first place making sure no one hits you with an item or passes you. What I suggest is playing grand prix mode but when the race starts don't press any buttons for a certain amount of time so that the AI racers get a head start. Try to make this head start as long as possible while still winning the race. This would make a much more interesting TAS to watch since you would have to use more items and you would have to deal with the other racers positions more (instead of just at the beginning of the race). If anyone is planning on making a TAS of this game I hope you consider this idea.

I disagree, i think the reason it hasnt been made yet is that it will be really hard to optimize, and i think everyone will love to see the "perfect" laps for all tracks, its not boring at all.

I agree with foda, a perfect race means that you will overlap the other cars anyway and attack them anyway. Best thing would be if you could manage to overlap all cars (even the 2nd place car) on 150cc. And yes, it's very hard to optimize this game, much harder than F-Zero because of the power slide and other special moves F-Zero didn't have, and I still needed 13000 rerecords for 2 min to optimize everything in F-Zero.

Michael should definitely do this TAS ^_^ Since he is a great player of this game, I don't think he would rerecord his run that much. Go M.Fried! Edit: I would certainly not be bored to se him speedrunning all levels. On the contrary, I would be much entertained.

It would be very difficult to overlap the 2nd place AI in 150cc. I think you can only get green shells and banana peels (feel free to correct me, I'm too lazy to check) when you're in 1st place, and you'd have to use those extremely effectively. That is of course not a problem in a TAS but it would require a whole lot of optimizing. Plus the enemies get extra speed when you're ahead in order to catch up. (At least I think they do.)

It's definately harder to get good items when you are placed 1st or second but I don't know if it's impossible or not to get stars there. The item-field still ticks around and with luck manipulation it would be easy to test all frames and see if it's possible to get atleast a mushroom (if a star is impossible to get). Also, it should start from a "save" because I think it should be played at 150cc and that requires that the game has already been beaten at 100cc (and maybe 50cc?). 150cc is the fastest and IMO the most entertaining.

Plz, just do the time attack. An idea that leads to a time attack is a good idea. GBAGCN's idea and the more "normal" ideas are all good, and I would love to see the time attack. (Besides, there are no new time attacks, I will go mad in afew days.) Idea idea idea.
