im using fceu 98.12 blip.win im trying to make a TAS, and when i pause the recording, then save state, then resume recording, i get that "FCEU HAS ENCOUNTERED A CRITIAL ERROR AND MUST SHUT DOWN" ...ive been trying to kill the boss of the first level of contra now for about an hour becuase of this garbage... even more annoying than having to redo it 5000 times, it resets my config each time it dies on me.

Never seen this error... have you tried workarounds? Like unpausing the game before resuming record? Or stopping the movie, start it again, and resume record a few seconds after that? Make a backup of your config. Just exit cleanly once after you set all the options.

what i was doing was killnig the boss of the first stage in contra in an attempt to redo my 2 player run. to kill the first boss with any kind of perfection, i need to play on 3% or 1% speed, and need to change my configs and total of 3 times in order to play 2 seconds of the game. when i would change my config, i would hit my pause button (emulator pause, not game pause), then save my state, then change my config. then when i would go back and unpause, about 1/3 of the time i would get a windows error message, and fceu would close. then when i reopen fceu, whatever config i had is changed back to my old OLD farting-around config. i dont understand.

Me neither. But anyway, why don't you play with frame advance instead of 1-3% speed? People generally seem to think it's a lot more efficient. Perhaps you wouldn't have to switch configs around then.

Ya! I'm not the only one. I had the same error with krieg747 long time ago. FCEU is a little unstable with my computer. How about VirtuaNES ? To me, It's the best NES emulator now.

Don't do a 2 player run without frame advance. Use frame advance ALL the time, at speed of 50% or 100% (turbo doesnt work at 100%).

It's a common problem with FCEU. It seems to happen if you're coming out of a pause at speeds below 25%. I don't know what the issue is exactly, but I think it has something to do with the sound. Yes, it's very annoying, but unfortunately not a whole lot can be done right now.

the best things i could think of was saving and quitting the movie before coming out of frame advance and then starting the movie at whatever speed i wanted and loading and the state back. ...i thought there was a topic that said if you only opened the emu after a crash and then played the movie and reloaded it (last save state) that it would pick up from where it left off no problem... but i cant seem to find that source so im not sure

I used to have this error all the time. It seems to be a little better if you turn off the sound. But as others have said, the best solution is to slow down no further than 25% and use frame advance when you need real control.

I think it's safest to only pause at 100%.
