In the spirit of this thread, I propose a Sonic 2 run using Knuckles. But I have to wonder if it's possible to complete this game. I recall, when playing it on console years ago, that Knuckles doesn't jump as high as Sonic, and that prevented him from damaging Eggman in the final stage. I think I tried climbing up the wall, but there was no wall to climb on. Can anyone prove me wrong on this?

When Robotnik flies into the air and crashes down, he bends over for a moment, and Knuckles can hit him / glide into him.

This would be an interesting run to see in my opinion. Would you still be able to get the Chaos Emeralds as Knuckles or no? Would you even consider getting them or just skipping them to save time?

For entertainment, it would be interesting for you to get the Chaos Emeralds. But on the other hand, it's not a Sonic game without speed, I'm torn between the two. :)

Speed and collecting Chaos Emeralds are not wholly mutually exclusive, unless you mean "total speed of game completion" and not "speed through each act of each zone". You just have to plan you're route so that you go past a lamppost with more than 50 rings, then take a very small detour to enter the stars that appear. Plus, when you get all seven emeralds, you gain the ability to use Super Knuckles by gaining more than 50 rings and then attempting to glide. This can also be enabled by cheat code, but it's correct to only use it the proper way in a TAS.

And in this particular game, unlike Sonic 2 alone, entering a bonus level does not take away your rings. So if planned well, you can enter several bonus levels in the first few acts without having to collect 50 more rings each time.

That wouldn't be very conducive to a speedrun though, since you'd have to wait all that time twelve times. One could probably record that part of the run at 50% speed, or even full speed if they're good.

I agree, I was just saying that it is possible to finish the game as Knuckles.

Does Knuckles jump higher when in Super Knuckles form? If so that might be a better way. Then again if I remember correctly there are no rings in the final level so that wouldn't work after all... Guess I answered my own question.

I thought he might back in the day, so then I wanted to take Knuckles through the Sonic style levels, but to my disappointment, no, he doesn't.

I know, a stupid question. But how do you "PLAY" as knuckles in sonic two?

Isn't it done by linking up the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge?

If you connect the Sonic 2 cart to the Sonic & Knuckles cart (there's room to plug another cart on top), you'll unlock "Sonic 2 & Knuckles", in which Knuckles is a selectable cahracter. There are also some extra levels and the like.

I've read you can get a ton of secret levels some secret way by linking Sonic and Knuckles to the first Sonic the Hedgehog, but I don't know about the second.

What I mean is access to areas in levels that you can't get to without playing the connected version.

Blue Sphere was the name of the game. Sonic 1 + Sonic & Knuckles, you get the "No Way!" screen, then hitting A+B+C or something like that opens the game up. It's just a bunch of the Sonic 3 bonus levels with a password system. And when I say a bunch, I mean 134217728 (2 ^ 27) of them.

Wait, you mean they planned for you to play as Knuckles before he existed? Or do you mean the link changes some level layouts so there's more to find?

The first. During development of Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 they added those areas in but then blocked them off for some reason, but in S&K they included the code that let Knuckes open them. (this is from memory, reading an interview that was published back when S&K came out, so I might be a little wrong, but I remember it saying that when they put that stuff in (2) they didn't know when or whether it would actually be used).

What I remember was this: Sega had the idea between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 to use "lock-on technology". Obviously Sonic 3 was coded with this idea in mind. Sonic 2 was worked around somehow to get it to work, and add little powerups to extra areas, like above walls and stuff, to make it seem like they were put there long ago - but they weren't. They also wanted to let Knuckles play in Sonic 1, but for whatever reason, they couldn't get it to work in time. I'm trying to find the article I read, if I do I'll post it here. Edit: http://www.emulationzone.org/projects/s&k/index.htm - not the easiest to read website, but it's got a lot of info.

That information you linked to is a bit outdated, but still a good read. Sonic 2 is supported by a hidden 256KB ROM that is only enabled when Sonic 2 is connected. Here's what is currently known: The S&K cartridge is always at $000000, and the attached cart always appears at $200000. The game checks the attached cart's product ID, and if it matches that of Sonic 2 (rev 00, 01, or 02) then it enables the 256KB ROM, which appears at $300000. Then, it jumps to $300000 and the game code runs entirely from that 256KB, referencing data from the S2 cart (which is now at $200000). With Sonic 3, the game logic is contained entirely within the main S&K cart, and it references the S3 cart only for data. My theory for the non-support of Knuckles in Sonic 1 is simply due to cost - since they had to basically rewrite the game logic and put it in the hidden ROM, that means that they'd have to do the same thing again for Sonic 1, which may have simply cost too much to implement.

In Sonic Mega Collection the explanation was that Knuckles clashed with some of the backgrounds in Sonic 1... but your reason sounds better than that.

The reason had something to with the palette of the whole game being dependant on Sonic's colors. Since Knuckles is red and not blue, it would've rendered the rest of the game in some screwed-up colors... or so they said. But then the hack I referenced in the first post of this thread was made, which leads me to believe (a) the Sonic Team was lazy or (b) lots of people have better programming skills than professional video game makers.

Well, in Stealth's hack, he didn't use exactly the same pallet for Knuckles, allowing him to keep the original colors for all the badniks and everything else. There are a few people who want the accurate Knuckles pallet, and there is such a hack of Stealth's hack being done. But, of course, it throws off some of the colors throughout the rest of the game.
