Inversion is a homebrew game that features the ability to make solid objects intangible and vice versa. This movie enters Extra world by using the password "DEAD" and aims to complete it as quickly as possible. This beats the currently published [2470] NES Inversion "Extra world" by MESHUGGAH in 01:17.87 by 86 frames, or 1.43 seconds.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.2.2
  • Game version used: 1.4
  • Complete Extra world as quickly as possible

Hello! I've seen TASes for years, but this is my first time actually creating a real TAS.
Soon after I submitted the original run that saved 56 frames, MESHUGGAH has made further improvements. 64 frames are saved from stage 2, and 22 frames are saved from stage 6, both by using faster routes.

Newly found tricks, some of which are unuseful

  • You can switch dimension and jump off from arrow walls in the same frame. It doesn't save time in extra world TAS, but it does in main levels TAS.
  • You can collect a pickup without making it disappear.
  • In a duo level, Holding L+R makes both players move right.
  • The last stage of extra world is really glitchy:
    • Pressing D+L+R or U+L+R pauses the game. Pressing it again doesn't unpause the game, you have to press T instead.
    • Only duo jumps when you press L+R.
    • Only main jumps when you press A+L+R.
    • Only duo dies when you press T+D+L+R or T+U+L+R.
    • Only main dies when you press S+T+D+L+R or S+T+U+L+R.

Noxxa: Judging. Will update the movie file once the frame war has settled down.
Noxxa: Replaced with v9 (a 30-frame improvement over the initial submission) and accepting as an improvement to the published movie.
feos: Pub.

You didn't have to cancel it. A judge could've replaced the input you provided with the updated one MESHUGGAH created. The only thing that would've been important is if you're fine with having MESHUGGAH as co-author.

Oh, I'll uncancel it in that case. I think MESHUGGAH should be added once it's updated.

It seems stage 6 wasn't optimized enough. I saved 2 more frames there, but I can't upload it to WIP; not sure why. Edit) 1 more frame saved. Edit) I realized that I was trying to upload a .fm3 file.

You need to zip the file up, before uploading it to the userfiles. If that doesn't work try uploading the .fm2 here: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php

fm3 can be uploaded if you remove the overhead. Saving compact fm3s, I can upload them even without zipping.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

MESHUGGAH saved 14 more frames using a different strategy and a new trick, and this is probably the final one. Since most of the improvements were made by MESHUGGAH, I want MESHUGGAH to be the main author and me added as a co-author. I'm fine with either way though. I added the list of newly found tricks in the submission text.

I'm done on my part, couldn't find anymore improvements since my previous post in this thread. edit: since I've found the last improvements (and did most of the input), let me be the main author.

Hmm, this is the first time I'm seeing Inversion. My first thoughts are: "this seems like a modern indie puzzle platformer." ...And sure enough, Inversion is a homebrew game from 2013, although done using NES technology. Pretty neat. Hey, these levels seem pretty creative and with the frame wars the playing is sure be optimal. So here's a 'yes' vote for the mild intrigue I felt for this whole thing.
