What is the output of this command? glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" When I used the proprietary nvidia driver, I had to reinstall it using the nvidia installer every time the kernel was updated. So if you haven't done so, you could try that.

glxinfo says Yes. I use the binary nvidia package provided by my distribution, and most other things work fine. Thank you anyway. I’ll try to update my system, there is almost a gigabyte of updates, there is a chance that it will resolve the issue. (upd) yes it is working now

As LTRP didn’t announce his new TAS here, I do it myself then… See here. (upd 1) By the way, I’ve just found a very very quick level-wrap in this game, but it seems to be useless when applied at the point where I tried, however, the technic could be used at another place. I guess LTRP could have found it, too, but, as we all know, he prefers doing shortcutless runs. Also, I am ahead of LTRP in my test attempt anyway, so, if I have enough time & patience, I will finish (with some help from feeuzz) my own attempt and post it, too… (upd 2) Since I hasn’t TASed for a long time, and feeuzz also was in good mood for TASing, we decided to check out LTRP’s recent TAS and try improving it, just to see how it would look if it was made by our legendary team (lol). As this was originally a just for fun project, it wasn’t any hard to go ahead by seconds. At first we were planning to beat the whole game, but what we found in the second act, was way too adorable, sweet and cute to continue. *_* Link to video

This game deserved a full TAS… Link to video But you should realize that this is still very improveable, as this is the second TAS of this game in history, and there can be a lot of better routes / shortcuts / glitches and so on… In fact, I found some zips, but did not investigate if they could save time. Anyway, enjoy. (upd) I’ve found this. If anyone wants to TAS this, check it out, you’ll find it useful :)

I made a full TAS of Sonic 3 & Knuckles DA Edition as Knuckles. In short: a "meh" run, extremely improvable, no glitches, no zips, almost 10,000 rerecords. Enjoy. Link to video

Meanwhile, I have discovered how to beat Sonic 1 Egg Factory not simply faster, but way faster :) But well, this is probably already not so interesting to watch, I agree. Link to video Had no mood to redo or copy-paste the boss fight, sorry… Just showing the idea. LTRP, your run was extremely fun to watch, despite being really not much optimized and too glitchless for my eyes. Loved the capsule covered by snow in Ice Cap zone :) Can I please TAS this hack too? I think I could find some glitches and shortcuts if I tried it :)

Personal opinion, glitchless runs are the best, because it shows how the game is supposed to be played. Glitches are fun, but nowadays they are too heavily abused to be entertaining. Thanks for the feedback anyhow. As for the request, I'm not gonna optimize that hack anytime soon (if not, at all). I wanted to be a one-time project for me, and wanted to showcase it to others if they wanted to improve on it.

FYI I’ve found out that liquidshade’s Sonic Extractor can be used to figure out the level layouts for this hack. Here is a piece of Angel Island 1, as a proof. It is slightly glitched, but still gives you a lot more information about the layout than you can see with a naked eye. So, if you decide to TAS it seriously one day or another, consider making level maps to see what routes you can take and where you can probably abuse a glitch to save time.

I’ve found a way to finish act 2 of Sonic 1: Egg Factory in 0:01.05 (yes, 1 second and 5 frames). But it’s too dirty to be abused, because it’s only in-game time so short (I found a way to reset it), the real time is normal. So I’ll just minimize the in-game time without applying this glitch. Will post the new run right here soon, until then enjoy this screenshot. (upd) okay. Instead of posting on YouTube, I decided to make it downloadable. I hope you enjoy this TAS, which is almost-optimized now (though I realized two minor mistakes after finishing it — but I don’t care much, it’s still fast as hell =). Apologies about file size, I’m too lazy to read stuff like encoding guidelines. If someone wants a gmv, here it is. (upd2) fixed the mistakes, saved 1 more in-game second. Will post the resulting run (which I rate as having “submittable” quality) tomorrow. (upd3) updated the link above (upd4) FYI if you get a gravity glitch (some TASers call it slope glitch — it is the same) before act 2, you can beat act 2 even faster. However, the method of getting it, which I used for a test, is way too slow — I loose a lot more in act 1 than I gain in act 2 from it.

New faster versions of some TASes: Link to video Has a zip courtesy of Sonikkustar, a new route, pause trick to load the boss faster (gains in-game time at the expense of real time, corrupts the HUD) and a better boss fight. Link to video Improved Bunnie TAS with new zips and better optimization. And abusing a double-hit trick on FZ boss, which Rodolfo Leonardo de la Riva pointed out to me in a comment. There are probably frames to gain overall, and it comes agonizingly close to 999990 points. With no-cost route changes, I can increase this by about 1500 points, but I can't see a way to go beyond that without losing a lot of time.

Dear glitch finders, I feel that I need your assistance with my Amy@S3K project. I already know how to improve stages like FBZ2 or LBZ1, but there are a few stages which are still a big problem for me. They are: — Sandopolis zone act 1 — Sky Sanctuary zone If you can find any shortcuts / routes better than mine (for Amy), I would be very glad ^_^ I also know a slightly better route for Sandopolis zone act 1, but last time I was unable to come there early enough to be able to take it, for more info see the submission text. I highly doubt I can succeed at it when trying it again next time…

Kind of. LTRP and Qwerty are [almost] inactive (and that’s the main reason); WAKO had left; me, feeuzz and marzojr prefer Skype groupchat. However, I prefer to keep the forum for the “emergency case”, if we ever have to discuss something with ability to save the discussions for the future use. Anyway, let me show you my new TAS. It’s a just for fun project, easilly improveable. It uses a lot of glitches, but the game has much more — for example, when I played this game casually, I randomly caused a level-wrap, which I never saw before — it was like a loop zip, but in the very top of the loop, instead of the bottom. I did not enter the terrain by jumping, like it’s usually done — I was just rolling through the loop normally, and suddenly experienced an instant zip. As I was unable to redo it in TAS mode, I proceeded without it. Hope you’ll enjoy the run even without this trick (I will try to perform it later). Link to video

Yet another TAS for my YouTube. I apologize for having so many comments here… Hope at least some of you enjoy my work ^^ Fun fact about this run: it is not much optimized (not intended to be submitted), but during this run Sonic’s X speed exceeds 11000 sp/f and Y speed exceeds 20000 sp/f, which is (almost certainly) significally greater than max speeds in all currently published Sonic the Hedgehog TASes. I only doubt about some Ice Cap runs. By the way, I know a hack where you can move upwards with acceleration (like if you could abuse farts thrust), you can take almost any Y speed there with ease, I call it like “super mega ultra hyper orbital jump”, because there are many “super jumps”, “orbital jumps” and so on in other hacks / using cheat codes, but this one is absolutely ultimate: you can even overflow your Y speed if you really want. The hack is called Sonic 1 Open Source Project, marzojr says it’s made by a code theif, but I love that hack anyway. Link to video

I’d recommend you to not hurry with the submission, as your runs look quite dirty and improveable very much for my eye at this time. For the beginning, try to beat some existing run — for example, TheYogWog’s one (which, as I know, is kind of easy to improve, but certainly needs some skill at the same time).

thanks for the criticism, btw yes definitely can do it better but have some problems with knuckles, as example i don't know glide into spikes , floors or objects, if you can tell me if need X velocity or height maybe my runs will be much better, unfortunately i have not the sonic hud also.

Sadly, there is no instant solution to your problem, learning how to TAS is actually way harder than you probably think, and can take years. I suggested a way to start — improving an exising run. When you start it, you’ll face more and more problems to solve and questions to answer. The first problem is absense of the hud, and the solution is easy and obvious: just install it. When you do it, you’ll have much better control of your character, because you’ll see more information. Then you will wonder how to do cartain trick, many questions are already answerred in the wiki page. My personal advise is to learn about braking technics first. It’s a shame, but this extremely important information is not present in the wiki page, however, you can easilly find it in the forum topics. Braking differs very much between the games (Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, etc) and characters (Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, etc) and there is no “universal” recipe. However, if you ask me how to brake correctly in certain game, I will give you a detailed instruction. The other important topics are: — loop jumps (usually they are: up-loop jump, down-loop jump and out-loop jump, but there can be many exceptions) — speed caps (ASC, GSC and RSC — air, ground and rolling speed caps) — horizontal overflow, it’s setup and usage, including camera position management … and many others… Try it yourself to see. I mean, try not just making a new run. Try redoing TheYogWog’s one, without looking into existing improvements, and try to find out where you can go slightly faster, trigger a thing a bit earlier and so on… (upd) you should also pay more attention to keeping your speed high in order to avoid charging spindashes so often as you do — spindashes have their own price — some frames of standing still, and in some cases running at a lower speed is faster than stopping for a spindash, especially considering the way you brake.

Really thanks, i apreciate you replys and download the HUD in marzojr post, maybe not be a expert TASer in one day but i will enjoy learning. maybe try to beat yogwog angel island or other map for learn the glide spikes and floors (I think this is essential as knuckles in this type of runs). Also i am trying to make a ring attack in another hack called "D.A Garden edition" im working on that, optimising runs, time, shortcuts and trying to enter in sonic/tails areas, you can see this video. Link to video Im working on marble garden but this in very hard because this hack have sonic, tails, knuckles areas in all maps and don't have screen caps of the entire level, but is fun know new maps. Also is any site to contact for chat and give me tips?

The best way, which will benefit other TASers, is to kindly ask marzojr to add support for this hack.
Evil_3D wrote:

What makes you sure that you know the map now? Didn’t you miss some rings? Better to have a better control. Extract the level map using Sonic Extractor. Also add this short Lua script:
Language: Lua

-- © marzojr memory.registerexec(0x1A8FC, 2, function(addr, range) gui.text(100, 100, "LOST") end)
It will let you know when a ring attracted to your shield gets unloaded (which obviously should be avoided). Good luck
