I haven't played that game in quite a while, but isn't the game playing with the D-pad? Well either way even if it does it won't really help the black pictures
The game plays with the control stick. The control stick doesn't work in game because it gets stuck in tutorial mode at the beginning due to poor emulation. Also, other issues that we mentioned above. Snap is notorious for not really emulating very well on anything.

No. RachelB says it runs "fine" using the emulator's software renderer... at about 4 frames per second. I know TASers use slowdown, but it feels different to have it forced upon you. The "faster" thing to do would be to decompile the Wii's proprietary N64 emulator and port a version to PC.

Or wait for the completion of CEN64. (http://cen64.com/index.php)

This was tested recently. You can't turn in to pictures to Oak, even using the Software Renderer backend.

This actually runs it fine (supposedly, I didn't test this myself), but it has no TAS'ing abilities, lots of graphical issues and runs at <10 FPS regardless of your hardware (since it's intention is to be a cycle accurate emulator).

CEN64 is open source ( https://github.com/tj90241/cen64 ) so whenever it is at a good state of completion it can be integrated into Bizhawk and given TAS tools that way. (Of course, when that will be I have no idea, but I'm pretty excited for it!)

I tried Pokemon Snap in Bizhawk's latest SVN (that compiles) and I couldn't move the camera. I could take pictures, but there were no Pokemon to take pictures of. The Pictures I took, were graphically messed up as well.

Awesome! I wonder when points for picture is generated. maybe there's a value we can find that determines how good a picture is. then again.. im not entirely sure how pokemon snap really works. time to watch some videos!

Pictures are not actually rendered until the course is exited. The photo has separate depth copies for the Pokemon and terrain and assembles them later for the final picture. Using these depth copies, the game can tell various statistics about the picture. When a picture is chosen for evaluation, the game calculates the scores based on the statistics.
Here you go. Also kinda....interesting that an emulator inside an emulator runs this but a certain other emulator still can't. lol

I'd probably be willing to TAS this game, with some strategy guidance. I know the game very well casually, and have some basic understanding of the speedrun strats from watching WR runs/attempts.

http://www.speedrun.com/run/8y8xgxdm maybe i'm missing something, but don't you just run to the biggest number of pictures possible in order to unlock courses and timesavers as soon as possible?it has commentary besides being a WR
TAS i'm interested: megaman series: mmbn1 all chips, mmx3 any% psx glitched fighting games with speed goals in general

That's how it seems, yes, but perhaps with good enough luck & some TAS-only photo accuracy levels like Tunnel and River won't have to be re-entered to acquire items like the apple and pester ball. I'd need to know if the wr route could be improved, theoretically.

Ares64 has been released! And it runs Pokemon Snap So after years of wanting to do this I have begun. Got a few RAM values written down and a LUA script started. Looking to basically be able to trace how good a photo either before I take it or immediately after, so that will be very exciting. Link to video

Aren't speedruns of this game all about lag reduction? Then any TAS aiming for speed is just automatically going to be faster just due to inaccurate emulation, it's the same problem as with Star Fox 64 speedruns. In that game, the solution was to go for a highscore TAS instead, but I'm not sure if something similar would be possible here. Maybe a playaround?
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

i would definitely watch both runs aimed for speed and entertainment individually!
