I just watched last submission of Aria of Sorrow "All souls" and came up with an idela for a new category on these kind of platformer: "Killer mode" or "Bloodfest mode". It would be the opposite to pacifist mode, and could be defined as killing every foe as possible, with a certain restraint to keep the progress of the run, e.g. kill every enemy loaded afeter entering a room, or everyone that shows off on the screen (ignoring loaded ones that don't show off, considering the game has no respawns) etc. Do you think this category is way too arbitrary to implement?

Abe's Oddysee says hi. (Maybe it would be too arbitrary, idk.)

The issue with this sort of category is that most games have respawning or respawnable enemies, which means that the killcount you can amass is infinite, and therefore it's hard to make a definable category that isn't also somewhat arbitrary. Depending on the game or on how the category is defined, it might also get very repetitive. That said, there have been a few attempts and some successes. Oddworld "maximum casualties" stands out as an example.

I think Gradius III can also be considered an example, as it tries to kill as much as possible. (I'm not sure if this is done because of convention/tradition, or because it reduces lag. Either way, the result is an effective "100% kills" run.)

We actually do have such a thing: http://tasvideos.org/Movies-C2005Y.html It's not the most popular category though, and also quite obscure, given how the Oddysee run wasn't even tagged such along with this thread.

This is a well-known category in NetHack (sufficiently so that I had to write a hack of it once for a tournament that made the kill count explicitly tracked by the game), called "extinctionist". People don't speedrun it, though, because it requires way too much grinding to make all the enemies appear (most methods of generating enemies can only generate finitely many so the game eventually runs out, leading to a natural end point for the category, but it takes ages). The NetHack community being what it is, people have even done pacifist extinctionist (where you arrange for every monster in the game to die indirectly but don't kill any yourself).

I think it will be entertaining if you kill all the enemies with headshots in a 3D shooter, depending on how difficult it is for a regular player and how "awesome" it looks like. Why do you think?

I just noticed this thread and thought I would pop in to say I just finished a rough draft of a kill all enemies 100% run for smb1. I've gotten a lot of feedback saying that it's fun to watch and I will say that the complexity in smb of killing all enemies and trying do it as fast as possible is very challenging. VERY challenging and I would imagine that there is a lot of different possible "paths" to take to accomplish the goal which could lead to a lot of fun competition in this category. https://youtu.be/t_vdd-kpppo

It would be a lot of fun to see a 'genocide' tag like that because it changes up the storyline and the timing in certain games. Also, if we have a pacifist tag, it's only fair we have a genocide tag. For example, in Undertale, it means that you have to take a lot more time to kill all the enemies in each room - but you get to TAS normally unseen enemies like Undyne's final form. And we also get to see SANS (i love him) get TASed!
Thank you and have a nice week! :)
