Not Mario returns to save the princess once more, this time with the side objective of not dying a dozen times.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.2.1
  • Beat the game without abusing death/game over skips
  • Show off all the great levels in this well designed game
  • Rescue the princess (what a surprise!)

Comments

An Atari homebrew game that's entirely original and not a ripoff of a more popular video game franchise.
This TAS is mostly identical to the published one, except that this run also shows off each X-1 level in the game rather than skipping past it.

Stage by stage comments

1-1

Very simple, just jump and avoid enemies, clip into the wall at the start to avoid the not goomba.

1-2

Also very simple, avoid enemies and not die. moving platform causes lag when touched and there's no way around it.

1-3

Manipulate enemy positioning by keeping a not Koopa near the end to trick the game into immediately spawning the springboard.

1-4

Avoid enemies, bypass a not Koopa by jumping in a specific way. Not Bowser is incredibly easy to defeat, just jump on his head 3 times and he's defeated.

2-1

Avoiding enemies as well, the first stage where not spinies are introduced. Nothing special.

2-2

Moving platform is unavoidable.

2-3

Again manipulating enemy spawning to make the spring at the end show up.

2-4

Ceiling bumps are unavoidable here. Not Bowser dies instantly.

3-1

Are those gun bullets? Nothing special here.

3-2

Some pretty tight and cool enemy stomps here.

3-3

We stop a few times to spawn a not red Koopa near the spring to spawn it.

3-4

Have to wait for the not Thwomp to rise, don't want to hit the walls as it causes us to stop momentarily, however we can use this to walljump as they act as platforms. Not Bowser defeated (again).

4-1

Doing precise movements and killing a specific Not Koopa to spawn an enemy at the end. There normally is a Not Piranha Plant in the Not Pipe that we would have to wait to go down, but this movement despawns it allowing us to continue.

4-2

Same concept as described before, except we use a Not Bullet Bill to despawn the Not Piranha Plant.

4-3

Some more manipulation movement to get the early spring spawn.

4-4

Wall clip is used thanks to the weird platform collision in the game. Not Bowser is defeated and thus the princess is saved rescued. Yay!

Other comments

Hope you enjoy. Thanks for watching!

feos: Accepting as a new, "deathless" branch. Even though the existing run is in Moons, and has good votes so far, even if it didn't, these 2 branches would still both be vaultable, so they can't obsolete one another. This one goes to Moons as well, as a variant of a "warpless", or full completion branch. But don't assign the warpless label, since this game has no warps.
Stovent: Processing...

Nice run. This is a good enough homebrew game to be publish-worthy, I'd say. The manipulation on 4-1 is a nice touch. I'm not completely sure that this category is interesting enough to merit publication alongside the any% run, however. I liked the run, and I voted Yes, but I can see that the inclusion of a few extra stages provides minimal additional benefit. I'm glad I'm not a judge :/ (The judges do awesome work, and I don't mean to insult them, by the way. They take on responsibility that I'm being lazy enough to avoid, and I thank them for it.)
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Again, YES VOTE! I still love how people are able to make home brew games that can capture the essence of the original classic on older machines. Nice game, and nice TAS. I'm for having both categories...as deathless and any% both demonstrate unique qualities. At least with this version, you can see all of the worlds in their entirety.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Yes vote. A copy of SMB1, which is different. This movie refers to http://tasvideos.org/5789S.html, which Mothrayas use a glitch to skip levels by game over.
Planned runs: Marble Madness (Arcade, Genesis J, GG/SMS) Proposed: Ecco the Dolphin (Genesis, GG/SMS, CD: regular, camera freeze) Ecco: The Tides of Time (Genesis, GG/SMS, CD; normal mode) Mario Kart DS (all cups, all missions) In progress: Grand Poo World 3 (all exits hard mode)

Arguably, that makes it a 100% run. Regardless, yes vote. And it's still funny how much a homebrew game manages to squeeze out of such an old system...

Very cool run. I like how this run lets you see more of the game, while still preserving some cool glitches, such as the wall-jump and through-wall glitches. Definite yes vote.

I agree. This category pretty much is the equivalent of a warpless TAS. And while the difference isnt really that significant, it's only due to this being a short game.

Here is a note:
For every World X-1, X-2, and X-4 you may enter the pipe on the first part. World X-4 is the pipe that leads to Bowser. For every World X-3, Mario will use the jump bar to go to the 2nd part.
Thwhomps and Bullet Bills were also used. Thwhomps are used in World 1-2, 1-4, 2-4, 3-2, 4-2, and 4-4. Bullet Bills are used at World 4-2 and 4-3.
