First you have to learn how to play games on an emulator and use savestates, what you of course should already know. Next you should learn to record your input into a movie file. You'll see that the savestates are synchronized with the recorded input and you can save and restore until you get the result you wish. Then you learn that you can pause the game and advance frame by frame to input very precise commands and make fine adjustments. That covers the basics. After that you'll need to learn some principles of cheating to find RAM addresses to monitor (and sometimes modify to test stuff).
