Hey TASVideos staff, please delete this if you can.

Please.

EDIT (about 5.5 hours after submission time):

I've been reading what everybody has been saying, and now I see that yes, it can be done faster, and I just didn't want anybody else to do a TAS of this "first" so I kinda rushed this one. I will make a better one with some new tricks I learned from here.
This was also my first completed TAS, so I guess you could expect that.
Thanks for the help people, and I kinda admit I rushed this.
I will try better next time.
This was also made with TAStudio...

2 Player Co-op Quest is a ROM Hack of Super Mario World were the 2nd player controls the enemies.
This TAS Completes all the normal levels, and not the bonus ones. The bonus levels are not needed.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 2.3.1
  • completes all normal levels
  • 2 players

Comments

I first found out about this ROM hack when I stumbled upon it when it showed up in my recommended section on YouTube (thanks yt), and I thought it was very interesting, so I played this hack with my brother. It was really fun, and so I thought I would make a TAS on it.
This improves on my previous submission of this game by a whole 13 seconds just by using P-Speed
(in this game, you have to hold X to run, not Y. Also, shout-out to EZGames69 for pointing out that I need to use P-Speed. After that, it took me 5 seconds to realize I held down the wrong button in the previous TAS.)

Stage by stage comments

Well... level 1! (It's literally called that in the game)

This stage was not to interesting except for the fact that P2 makes all the enemies fly or move 'outta the way!
I thought it would be cool to do something like that where P1 (mario) tries to beat the level as fast as possible while P2 makes the enemies get 'outta the way for P1!
In this level, it's quite easy to gain P-Speed by running on the ground in certain parts of the level (mainly before the checkpoint).

Watery Ruins

This stage is somewhat the same as the first one.
I tried to gain P-Speed as much as possible (well, I did in most of the levels) but this level was actually easier to do than level 1 because of how much ground there is.
(controlling the spike balls is legit the best thing ever)

Forest 'n such (yep, that's what it's called.)

There was so many enemies to play around with in this level, like the wigglers. I found them the most hardest to control though, because the move sooo slowly.
Anyways, just like the previous levels, P2 tries to move the enemies out of the way, then screws around with the wigglers.
P-Speed is also very easy to gain in this level.

Underground Moveage

This level...is an autoscroller that Mario controls.
...Yep. That's pretty awesome.
This level is pretty much the same as the previous TAS that I made, but with some improvements.
The enemy glitch in this level is that if you get close enough with the yellow "border" (?) and then press up on P2's controller, you can glitch them into the roof. It's pretty damn amusing.
There are some un-avoidable waiting sections in this level, which you just can't get past.
(P-Speed was the easiest to get in the level because you have a "border" around you and you always stay in the middle so running for enough frames gives you P-Speed)

Some castle (again, it's called that in the game)

This level is pretty much the last level of the "normal" levels.
I really like this level because of the mini-thwomp enemies, which are the best things to screw around with.
The boss fight was pretty hard to do. The only reason why I wait for the platform is because you just can't knock Lemmy into the lava on time. (Believe me, I tried. That's also were like a quarter of the re-records come from).
In the previous TAS, I thought you couldn't get past some waiting sections in this level, but you can, by spin-jumping on the saws. I'm really stupid.

Other comments

This is my first ever (real/optimized) submission to TASVideos. So I would just like to say, Hello!! I understand if this gets rejected.
I thought this game would be a good first submission because it is short and sweet, and pretty easy to play.
I am working on TAS that beats the normal levels and the bonus ones, so stay tuned for that.
I would just like to say, I only got into TASing because of sonicpacker's SM64 TAS. When I first saw it, I thought, "Hey, I could do this too!"...and I did. I just don't share that TAS because it's really crappy.
Anyways, after I found out about TASing, I've been really wanting to submit one to the site, but pretty much every single game has been done. So when I saw that this hasn't been done yet, I jumped right on it.

Special Thanks

BrunoValads and Amaraticando - SMW-BizHawk lua script
EZGames69 - pointing out that I didn't use P-Speed in my previous run (I'm an idiot, lol)

And that's all!

Thanks for reading!

Mario's all about speed if I'm not mistaken. At 31 seconds in you're not going in that forward direction and making use of well... speed and distance. At 1:43 Why didn't you moving the Chuck out of the way? Was it not possible? If it wasn't possible couldn't you have gone for a cleaner jump and avoided the Chuck? Edit: Went and attempted the first level. And I'll admit, I don't know how to TAS SMW fullstop. However: (Compared to 257 IGT on Dark's) That Chuck I was on about in Level 2: (Seconds before Spikestuff crashed BizHawk and forgot to save) Please take your time in TASing.

To echo spike here, but there are still many places where it seems like you slow down to avoid enemies, yet you have the power to control those enemies. Were you not able to move them out of the way? Can you not do any tight jumps to sneak past them? It’s also a bit appalling that you are tasing a SMW game, but completely forgot about P speed.

I can see you run between jumps, I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure the best way to conserve speed is getting it as high as possible (it ossillates) and frame perfect jumps. You can butt slide to get a bunch of speed if you can't get P-Speed, which you don't do in level 1. There are questionable slowdowns. Probably not an acceptable hack. No vote.

I got to 30 seconds in, where you (painfully) fail to boost from a koopa bounce you (absurdly enough) could have easily set up and seemed to be setting up, and went "NOPE." If you aren't going to boost that jump, at least putting things in a place where you don't need to wait to hit the ground from absurdly high in the air before advancing again would be wise. There's at least two ways that can be done better, and neither of them require any special talents. TASing isn't about playing a game well. It's about playing at a superhuman level. Please take the advice people have offered here and in Discord to heart.

I actually would like to see an optimized and entertaining version of this run. I imagine there's some fun things you can do with the second player besides simply moving enemies. You may want to check out the game resources page for SMW with explanations of tricks you can do to Fast Optimally(tm): http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/SNES/SuperMarioWorld.html Try not to be discouraged over your first TAS being suboptimal. Everyone starts somewhere. I'm sure given enough time and practice you can make a much more perfected run. :)

I second this. It was a rocky start for me as well. I'm going to be the opposition here and vote Meh, because there are times where the game play is interesting to watch...but I am not going to say that I believe this is optimal. There are many spots where I believe like EZGames69 where there are places to squeeze through, and I've seen slowing down used in places where it just doesn't seem to be the only option. Honestly, I think this would be an excellent TAS...if highly optimized. Please keep up the progress. Remember, the percentage of re-records says a lot about how much work was put into a TAS. Look at this: http://tasvideos.org/4536S.html (2870319 re-records).
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX
