Somewhere in 1999 I found strange PC game "Battlemaster" on a pirate CD called "200 best games: RPG and QUEST", now I know this game was actually Kgen98 + B.SMD ROM. But back then I didn't know anything about emulation, and the game sucked anyway. So I prefer to start counting from late 2000, when I've got fairly regular Internet access and soon (probably in early 2001) learned about Nesticle, ZSNES and Kgen/Genecyst.

It must have been 1995 or 96, we downloaded a Gameboy emulator and a couple of ROMs for my Performa 5200, back then (RTC connection with our 19k modem!). First time I played a Final Fantasy was on this (Final Fantasy Legend 3, well now I know it's just SaGa 3). I remember playing Link's Awakening some monthes after that, and Mario Land 3 / Wario. SNES emulation came way later, as it didn't play well on my old Mac. Didn't think of testing Nes emulation back then, I should have tried.

I can't remember exactly when I started, but I do know it was before ZSNES 1.0 came out. I would imagine I got going around 98 or so.

Most of you makes me feel like a rookie... It was either Zelda Link's Awakening on BGB or SoulBlazer on ZSNES (one of the last builds that where made), so around 2005-2006?

I don't know if this counts or not, but I first played a version of Super Mario World where you couldn't save and it had a "zone select". It ran in MS-DOS on an old Windows 98 all the way to 2003 until we got a new PC. This was the actual SMW and not some crappy knockoff port. There was also Pac-Man both included in a floppy disc which I still surprisingly have in my room. Then we played on Snes9X and then VBA some months after.

My first brush with emulation would probably be Comix Zone on my cousin's computer, if there wasn't an official PC port - otherwise it would have been an old version of Ages on some other friend's computer. The first emulators I deliberately sought out would have been DOSBox and an old GBC emulator called DreamGBC.

I played Super Mario World on ZSNES when I was 3~4 years old. Of course I didn't know what an emulator was at the time, my dad is who downloaded it because he liked playing it too. All I remember is that I couldn't kill some bosses and I was really afraid of Chucks.

Memory's quite hazy on the details. 2000-2005 (Age: 4-9) I was at a mate's place and they had a PS1 game (black disk, racer (most likely colin mcrae)) and loaded it into the PC. Played a bit of that. Don't recall what emulator I used. Heck, I never knew I touched an emulator back then until actually having to think about that time. It could've been the legacy Virtual Game Station for Windows. And then that was clouded by playing Age of Empires 2 and man was I was having fun trying to figure out "how do you turn this on". Fast forward to 2009 (13) and the emulator that stuck with me for ~6 years was PSXfin. 2009 was roughly the time I first took my own dive into emulation on my own... and well first started ghosting TASVideos too.

When I was about 7 or 8 years old (2002-ish), a friend brought over a copy of ZSNES with a bunch of games loaded on it. I couldn't really get too far into any of them, but they were fun to play nonetheless. Some games I specifically recall trying out at the time: * Bart's Nightmare * Doom * Super Mario Kart * Yoshi's Island * Zombies Ate My Neighbors For a long time after that, I forgot about emulation entirely and played other games. Fast forward to about 2008, and the advent of Let's Plays got me interested into retro gaming once more. One day, I eventually decided to download ZSNES again, along with *ahem* acquiring a copy of Super Mario World. The rest, as they say, is history.

I definitely used SNES96 and 97 back before they just changed it to 9X, and also used some NES emulators including NESticle, but the first one was probably some terrible precursor to NESticle that I don't remember anymore. My biggest highlight on old emulation was somehow getting through FF5's Ship Graveyard, on a ROM that was barely translated, with no transparency option. (Ship Graveyard, like Mist Cave in FF4, has a layer of fog covering it which is supposed to have some transparency; instead, it occluded the entire screen and was impossible to see anything.)

How about this. First tried an emulator in 2008.

Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I don't really remember, but either 2003 or 2004. Pretty sure it was some Snes9x version with Rockman & Forte. I didn't even know that game existed until getting my hands on the internet.

In the late 90s, the emulator that Nach helped to write. Back in the day when Donkey Kong Country 2 had a really dark level 2 and we had to disable some layer.

On my computer it was either late 1997 or early 1998 with Zsnes (around version 0.20, but now that I'm thinking it might had been even lower...) in DOS & a few years later I did played NES games using Nesticle... It was around when Final Fantasy V was still not fully translated, if I'm not mistaken (It was my first JRPG and one of the first games I played on the computer, hence why I love it so much) Although, technically my first encounter with emulators was that I actually played Super Mario Bros. in a computer when I was a kid way earlier (like in 1991 or so), a co-worker of my dad had it on his computer (on a floppy disk) and I was in disbelieve when he told me he had that game in such "cartridge". I also played Street Fighter 2 Turbo in 1995 with an uncle in the USA, but again I don't know which emulator it was and barely played a round or two... (I found it interesting to be able to play a console in a different platform, but couldn't say the same of the controller)

i think around 98 maybe one year earlier or later, zsnes was the bomb and i was playing rockman forte and also had a genesis CD with emulator genecyst and games on it, lots of hours playing sonic and other weird stuff like vectorman

TAS i'm interested: megaman series: mmbn1 all chips, mmx3 any% psx glitched fighting games with speed goals in general
