Here's a fool-around WIP. Far from perfect, but still reasonable enough. Here are a few comments. - I play on hard mode to avoid the tutorial "tips" from that stupid ape. - I play with a corrupt controller pak (a Mempak with raw data that the game thinks is a malfunctioning Rumble Pak) because it saves frames by eliminating the autosave function. Using the "continue without saving" option with a corrupt pak is faster than having the game save. To activate, set your controller to a Mempak with raw data off and load this savestate. (it's in the middle of the corruption warning) - At around frame 5000, I jump up because if I take the low road the game crashes. - At 5381 it is possible to jump to the upper log without climbing. I've only ever done it once, and certainly not in this testrun. - This is a minimalist run, i.e. getting to the umbrella as fast as possible. There's WAY too much stuff in this game to get a 100% run (because the game treats 100% as not only all the map pieces, all the TARZAN letters but also ALL THE FRICKIN COINS!!!) - Damage is usually not helpful in this game (since it throws you backward most of the time) but I do optimize damage by "bouncing" off a monkey onto a high platform. - It technically shouldn't be possible to move Tarzan before the level intro screen is finished. But I do it anyway ;) Enjoy and, as always, criticize like there's no tomorrow! PS - This is also my official cancellation notice for Zelda Oracle of Ages. Staf Chef seems to know what he's doing. Good luck!

Will the corrupt/alternate data loading be accepted into a TAS? Does the difference in cartridges really make a difference, if you're choosing "Continue without Saving?" And do you know why the game crashes if you take the lower route? Not to doubt you or anything, but this seems peculiar.

To answer your questions: 1. I think so. The save system on this ROM was screwed up anyway, so yeah, I think so. 2. It does. Saving takes a few frames extra plus a confirmation menu. 3. I think it has to do with hitting a trigger of some kind (perhaps for the tutorial in beginner mode). You still hit the trigger by jumping over it on level ground, so doing the leap of faith is the only way. I also suggest that you, and everyone, watch the run before jumping to any conclusions. I'm currently farther in the game and it's getting interesting...

Alright, here's a WMV file of my WIP (high and low quality) completing Welcome to the Jungle and Going Ape. I apologize about the crappy encoding sry :( A quick update and help request: I'm trying to do Elephant Hair Dare but I'm running into another crash trigger which is hard to get around. It happens right after I jump into the pool. Any help with avoiding the crash would be appreciated.

Is this still optimal? Is this a ROM problem or is it because you're screwing around with the hardware?

This is a ROM problem. You see, the reason I chose hard mode in the first place was actually to SAVE time. In Hard mode, you don't have to go through the in-level tutorial of game controls that you do in Medium or Easy mode, where it actually stops IN THE MIDDLE OF A LEVEL to explain how to play the frickin' game. The game usually crashes around the time the "helpful" gorilla would pop up and explain some new set of controls to you. But when the game checks to see if you're in medium or easy mode to activate the gorilla cutscene, the game goes beserk, especially if you press A just before the gorilla is supposed to pop up. For example, holding A while log surfing or swimming for the first time causes the game to crash. The only thing that screwing around with the hardware affects is the autosave function, eliminating it and saving frames. Hope that answers your questions Mukki. Now will someone actually WATCH my run plz? :(

YouTube ftw. I've finished Tarzan's child section (though the last two levels are not included in the YouTube video) including a no-damage run of Stampede, which is supposed to be impossible with normal human reflexes, especially on hard mode. I'm currently runnning through Tarzan's adult portion to see how to optimize it. I'll need to a hell of a lot of optimizing to line up the superbounce Rhinos in "Coming of Age". Anyone who's played the game before (yes, both of you!) knows what I'm talking about.

Thanks Mukki! Also commented on your Gex 64 run, nice job! I've been away from Mupen so I haven't had a chance to redo "Coming of Age", the first adult Tarzan level.

L4yer: the movie gets better as the levels get harder, especially in a level called "Stampede" which consists of Tarzan running away from a bunch of stampeding elephants. I took no damage for that level which is supposedly impossible with mere human reflexes (stupid humans!).

Sorry for bumping this hecking old topic but would be really awesome if someone did a full TAS of this game. Shouldn't be too hard because of how linear it is and there's like 1 major glitch only that we speedrunners know of.

You mean like the one you did or a 100% one?

Thank you for not providing a video in this topic of that "major glitch" that you're on about that you should provide if you're going to mention it in a thread as bare as this which would benefit from such information you're holding onto.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0O8NyCZw2w Here's the glitch. 100% would be very annoying to do since it requires all coins which take lots of time to get. Any% would be nice enough.

Furthermore, here's a more complete run of the game (not any% but not 100% either - viable category maybe?) for anyone to study general movement and such: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxPqrxIEEZU For similar reasons, here's my any% PB on PC which is kinda close to the WR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFWI954Z1UY And the N64 WR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D61EUrUtbRU and the PC WR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfx5FrFsoRk Note that PC is the fastest version around but I couldnt get it to work with Hourglass, so N64 is kinda the next option.
