Clockwork Knight was one of the launch titles for the Sega Saturn in the US, it was essentially a tech demo for what the Saturn could do. Much like Toy Story, the story features toys that come to life, but only when the princess sings to them, but now the princess has been captured, and it's up to our main character to rescue her.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.3.1
  • takes damage to save time
  • heavy glitch abuse

Comments

this is a 918 frame improvement to my last movie. a few months after that movie was published I noticed some areas that could be improved for some slightly faster times, but I found some faster boss fight strategies that would help.
I was trying to tas the 2nd game in this series but unfortunately the saturn core in bizhawk prevents the game from advancing after the first boss fight. So I’m stuck with the first game for now.

Stage by stage comments

1-1

nothing has changed in this level, just reach the end without stopping

1-2

One thing that I improved on was entering the boxes. instead of halting, I tried to let go of the directional button to lose speed faster.
another thing I improved on was my entry to the warp itself. in the last movie I wasted a bit of time because of a landing animation the soldier made, I was able to make it so I would completely skip it, saving probably half a second

1-3

this time save is probably one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. I had somehow did a double hit on the last hit of the baby head, which caused the stage to end early. I am not sure how this was achieved and it's very specifically executed. I just got extremely lucky with me finding this.

2-1

not much changed here, about 2 or 3 frames were saved near the end

2-2

same as the previous movie, slightly better optimization to save about 5 frames

2-3

boss is the same

3-1

I found that if you jump as you grab an item, you can get back to full speed. normally you would slow down slightly if you picked up an object, but jumping would prevent that slowdown.

3-2

nothing changed

3-3

so instead of making this boss do its attack phase, I figured it would be faster to keep using the same glitch I used before until it was dead. I tried to do the glitch on the first attack phase but it was a pain to deal with because the pot's hitbox would keep you from staying in one place.

4-1

just like the last movie, there's a trick where I can use a bomb to clip into a ceiling to skip a cycle.
I also found if you grind your head on the falling ceiling at the end, you can get a slight boost forward.

4-2

some more general optimizations done here

4-3

Edit: MAJOR SEIZURE WARNING AT THE END OF THE FIGHT. I’d like to ask whoever publishes this to add a seizure warning in the description or something.
instead of throwing the head to repeatedly bounce on the boss, I instead threw the head from the bottom as much as I could. I still do the glitch where I can get some early hits by jumping up and standing on an invisible platform

Final Boss

only thing that was different was a slight method to end input early, instead of attacking before I pull the block, I can attack earlier when I'm not moving and grab the block faster.

feos: Improvements confirmed. Most of them indeed come from better boss fights, but slight level optimizations are also there, almost every level is improved. The movie looks identical to the previous one so accepting to obsolete [3743] Saturn Clockwork Knight by EZGames69 in 14:38.22, inheriting the tier.

Not bad, a 918 frame improvement. You know my rule on voting, and this qualifies for a Yes vote.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Nice surprise, didn't think an improvement that big was possible.
